Language Arts

The focus in grade 9 Language Arts is to extend writing, reading, and critical thinking. For written assignments, students in grade 9 should be delving deeply into the given topic through making connections, incorporating knowledge from other classes, along with full explanation and description.  Reading is fundamental to all learning and is essential in developing writing.  From reading come ideas, vocabulary, historical learning, philosophical teachings, and an understanding of the human condition.

Assessment is based on the following stems:

Stem 1 ~ Reads to explore, construct and extend understanding

Stem 2 ~ Writes to develop, organize and express information and ideas

Stem 3 ~ Manages and evaluates information and ideas

Stem 4 ~ Constructs meaning and makes connections through speaking

Stem 5 ~ Constructs meaning and makes connections through listening
