Dear New Brighton Families,

We have one full week of online learning behind us and the question we are hearing more than any other is will we be back to in-person learning after the May long weekend? We here at the school get the information from the Alberta government at the same time as the general public and the last statement that was made is that we will be returning to in-person learning on May 25th. With that in mind, they have been clear that the number of positive cases and ICU rates can alter those plans. Either way, we are ready for whatever and where ever that might be.

For over half of our classes, online learning has been a reality when we have had positive cases resulting in isolation and this experience is showing. Joining some of our classroom's Google Meet sessions this week, I was very impressed with the engagement that was occurring. Understanding that this is a less than ideal situation for many families, I can assure you that there is still exceptional learning happening and our teachers and educational assistants are going the extra mile for our students. We have had a few technical hiccups that were quickly resolved and I may have inadvertently ended a large class meeting…(sorry grade 3s)

Virtual Parent Council Meeting – School Development Plan Engagement – Wednesday, May 19th @ 6:00

All parents and guardians of New Brighton School are welcome to join us Wednesday, May 19 at 6:00 for our School Council/Association Meeting. A School Messenger will be sent out early next week with the link to the Microsoft Teams Meeting. The Principal's Update at the meeting will include a presentation on our current year's School Development Plan with an opportunity for engagement and questions pertaining to it. We look forward to seeing you there.

Attendance

As a school, we are still responsible for taking morning and afternoon attendance during online learning. If your child will be absent from their daily online learning activities please call the school's attendance line to report the absence. The time required for the process of having our office staff calling home for unreported absences has over doubled with the transition to online learning as a result of the number of parents not calling the school to report. With our staff working from home the caller id may come up as Unknown Caller instead of the usual New Brighton School. We continue to have a very limited number of staff members at the school that will be answering any phone calls and checking the attendance line messages.

Fun Lunches

Our Subway Fun Lunch originally scheduled for May 20th has been moved to May 27th as a result of the move to online learning. The last day to order will now be May 22 by midnight. If you are interested in having a Subway lunch for your child please make sure to get your order in by then. To order any of our Fun Lunches you need to set up an account online at https://healthyhunger.ca/ .

Yearbook Orders

We are taking orders for the current year's (2020/2021) Yearbooks. If you are interested in ordering a copy please log into your My CBE Account from the website, not the app and go into the Fees section. In the Fees section look for optional fees and there you should see the Yearbook. We will also be sending home a paper copy of an order form for those who prefer the traditional method. The cost of the Yearbook is $30 and it is important to get your orders in soon as we have sold out in the past.

Sincerely,

Patrick Murphy

Dear New Brighton Families,

Here we go again, it feels like déjà vu with today being our first day of the two-week online learning period. Although we have been through this before, this is time is much different in many ways from our previous online learning periods. From an educational perspective, our students and staff are very familiar with the online Google platforms and the scheduling and routines that are part of the online programming. Our past experience will benefit everyone in that regard, however, we are very well aware of the impact that this shift has on families and their abilities to manage work schedules, with school schedules and the complexities that result.

Our staff find themselves in the same predicaments as many of you and are trying to juggle work obligations with family commitments. So when we say, “we are all in this together," we truly mean it. Please reach out to your child's teacher if you are struggling with these increased demands on your time or for anything else that we can help support you with. We know that everyone is doing their best within these tough circumstances.

Teacher Appreciation Day – Thank you

Our teachers would like to express their sincere gratitude for the Starbuck's Gift Cards that the New Brighton Parent Council/Association presented them with on Teacher Appreciation Day last Tuesday. The thoughtful message along with the cards gave them a much-needed boost

Dear New Brighton Families,

It was great to see the bike racks filled this week and so many students finding different, active ways to get to school. The weather allowed teachers to get their classes outside for lessons and for Mrs. Shaw to hold P.E. on the compound. Mr. B's class took the opportunity to go outside and pick up garbage around our school grounds as part of their Earth Day contributions. Taking the learning outside has been a great way to enjoy fresh air breaks and to build our students' understanding that learning goes well beyond the walls of their classrooms.

With next Monday being the start of a new month we will move from April's virtue of perseverance to our new virtue of hope for May. Our grade one team will be leading the work and I cannot think of a better time to focus on hope.

Dear New Brighton Families,

The new week did not bring us the new luck we were hoping for as we have had additional positive cases of Covid 19. We have been fortunate that we continue to have no cases of in-school transmission; however, four classes will be in isolation next week and have moved to online learning. We would like to thank our parents for being supportive and understanding when we have had to reach out to share the news that their child has been a close contact.

Please be assured that we work directly with the CBE Covid response team and AHS and that all communication that is sent home to parents is sourced from them. We act immediately after we have been contacted and put the protocols in action.

No School Monday, April 26th – CBE System Professional Development Day

This is a reminder that there is no school for our students (in-person or online) Monday, April 26th, as it is a System Professional Development Day. Students will return on Tuesday, April 27th.

Spring Picture Day – April 27th

Lifetouch will be here on Tuesday, April 27th for our spring picture day. Students will have their individual pictures taken and parents will be giving the option to purchase them online.

We will also be sharing this video with our parent community through a School Messenger message that will contain a link to the video on YouTube. Please look for the message on Tuesday and be prepared to be blown away by the amazing talents of our students.

Dear New Brighton Families,

It has been an interesting week of announcements of students going back to online learning and a positive case here in our building. I would like to take this opportunity to clarify that students in kindergarten to grade 6 are still attending in-person learning and that only grades 7 to 12 are moving to online learning next week.

I would again like to thank our school community for acting quickly and responsibly when their family members have tested positive or have become a close contact. It makes a tremendous difference in keeping our students safe and reduces the chances of having in-school transmission. We are continuing all of our efforts to make of school environment as safe as possible for our students and appreciate all of the support and encouragement from you.

Dear New Brighton Families,

It was great to be back after the break to hear the student's stories of adventure over the holiday. Many involved being back on their bikes, scooters and/or skateboards enjoying the warmer days we had. With April being upon us we have changed to a new virtue of the month after focusing on self-reflection in March. This month our focus is on perseverance and it is being led by our grade 4 team.

To date, we have focused on kindness, gratitude, love and self-reflection and we are seeing the impact on our student's level of understanding of each and how they relate to our overall goal of resiliency. This work ties directly to our School Development Plan and our Well-being goal, which has never been more important than during a pandemic. The children continue to be sources of inspiration and positivity helping one another through whatever obstacles have been put in their way.

Alberta Education Assurance (AEA) Survey

Parents of students in grade 4 should have received an AEA survey in the mail that can be completed online with the random access code mailed to you. If you would prefer a paper copy to mail directly to Alberta Education or if you require a copy of the survey in a language other than French or English you can contact the school directly. This survey replaces the Accountability Survey that has been used in the past and is an opportunity for parents to share their thoughts and feedback about our school.

Children in grade 4 will also be completing a student version of the survey here at the school during our regular instructional hours. All surveys are anonymous and the results will be shared next fall at our School Council meeting and on the school's website.

Fun Lunches

We have a Little Caesars Fun Lunch on April 15th. The last day to order will be April 10th by midnight. If you are interested in having a pizza lunch for your child please make sure to get your order in by then. To order any of our Fun Lunches you need to set up an account online at https://healthyhunger.ca/ .

Admin Messsage - March 26, 2021

Dear New Brighton Families,

Looking back at my Admin Message last year at this time we were having parents come to the school to pick up student's personal belongings just encase Alberta Education decided to move to online learning after spring break. At the time we had no idea what online learning would look like and most of us had never heard of or used Google Meet or Classroom before. None of us ever imagined that we would be entering a world of virtual learning that would last until the end of the school year.

A year later and we can move back and forth from in-person to online learning within 12 hours of being notified of a positive case of Covid and pick up right where we left off in the classroom the day before. As I write this I wonder what things will look like when I look back next year and read this on the anniversary of the first lockdown of 2020. I optimistically believe we will be in a better place with more things returning to normal. Until then we will continue to do everything we can to keep our students safe and to provide the best possible learning environments for your children.

Please stay safe, enjoy the break and we look forward to returning on Tuesday, April 6th.

Elephant Adoption - Results

Ms. Patsack/Mrs. Robertson and Mrs. Steedman's grade three classes had their big reveal this morning for the total amount of money raised for the adoption of an orphaned baby elephant for a year. The goal was to raise $50 US by selling bookmarks for $1 to be able to cover this cost through the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Nairobi, Kenya. The students like to call it “Operation New Brighton Elephant," however, we will now need to change that to “Operation New Brighton ElephantS!"

Five orphaned baby elephants are now the proud new members of our New Brighton School family! With over $487 raise the students were able to adopt one elephant per grade and also provided funds to go towards milk and hay. What a tremendous accomplishment and another powerful example of how our students can make a difference in the world. Please click here to view to video that the students created and shared with the school today at a virtual assembly. You can also click on this linkelephantInfo.pdf for a document with each elephant's story.

Dear New Brighton Families,

Students and staff were able to take full advantage of the warm weather this week. Many classes took their work outside to get some fresh air and new perspectives. While outside we discovered that the melting snow cover had revealed another downside to covid, which was the number of masks that are littering our school field and other parts of the city.  Just one more reason we cannot wait for this pandemic to end.

The weather has also led to a large number of items being left outside at recess, lunch and after school. Please remember to label your child's belongings to make it easier for us to return them when they are left outside. See below for the pictures of our lost and found.

The grade 3 Adopt an Elephant fundraiser was a big success. We have had a few students ask us where we will be keeping it after we adopt it so we may have a bit more explaining to do around that. We are looking forward to sharing the final total with the students next week.

Spring Beach Day Tuesday, March 23

To mark the arrival of spring we will be having a dress for the beach day on Tuesday, where students are invited to wear beach/warm weather attire to school. Anything tropical or seasonal will do, and hopefully, the weather cooperates with us to help set the mood.

Fun Lunches

We have a Subway Fun Lunch on March 25th just before Spring Break. The last day to order will be tomorrow, March 20th by midnight. If you are interested in having a Subway lunch for your child please make sure to get your order in by then. To order any of our Fun Lunches you need to set up an account online at https://healthyhunger.ca/ .

Dear New Brighton Families,

Although it was a short week, it allowed for us to celebrate having all of our classes return to in-person learning. Students and staff alike were excited to be back in person and enjoyed having the chance to be outside and playing with classmates.

We have been enjoying the warm weather and earlier sunrises. It makes our travels to school safer with the improved visibility but it has also has made for some slippery spots in the early morning and muddy spots in the afternoon. Please make sure your child(ren) is wearing appropriate footwear for outside on days like these to keep their feet clean, warm and underneath them. Our staff have done our best to get gravel and salt down on the icy areas around the school but the constant melting and freezing create conditions that we need to be cautious around.

We would like to thank our NBS families for taking the time to be a part of their student's learning by participating in the Parent/Teacher Conferences yesterday and today. This is a big part of understanding where they are in their educational journey and demonstrates to them that you are interested in their efforts. We know that there we a few technical glitches but for the most part things went smoothly. If you had difficulties and missed your appointment, please remember that staff are always willing to set up a virtual meeting or phone call to discuss your child at any time throughout the year.

Dogs on School Grounds

We would like to thank our dog owners who are walking their dogs to school on a leash and saying their goodbyes from the sidewalk or school ground boundaries. We truly appreciate everyone's effort in this regard. I know it is sometimes hard to understand that our beloved companions could be intimidating to anyone, but it can often cause fear through the eyes of a young child who is unfamiliar with it.

Elephant Adoption - Reminder

Ms. Patsack/Mrs. Robertson and Mrs. Steedman's grade three classes have been working hard learning about the significance of the elephant in the Indian and African cultures. Through their discovery, students have learned how important elephants are to the environments in which they reside, how elephants are used, such as logging, ceremonial celebrations and their spiritual significance. Students have also been learning how laws surrounding animal rights continually change. Part of our social studies curriculum in grade three is to practice what it means to be a global citizen. We have had many discussions about how we can make a difference in the world without physically being there and students have learned that elephants are an endangered keystone species.

We have decided that we will be advocating for the elephants through the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Nairobi, Kenya. We are hoping to raise enough money to adopt an orphaned baby elephant for a year. Our students like to call it “Operation New Brighton Elephant." In order to do this, it would cost us $50 US.

We are organizing a school-wide bookmark sale to raise money for the adoption. Your child will be given the opportunity to purchase a $1 bookmark that was designed by one of our students on March 18 and 19. If your child would like to buy a bookmark and contribute to the cause, please send $1 on those dates.

For more information on the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, please visit the link to their website and the attached video from their orphanage.
