Families need to purchase a reasonably sized back pack that has room for their labelled lunch and snack, as well as library books and mittens, toques, etc. depending on the weather. FOR SAFETY, PLEASE LABEL THE BACKPACK EITHER INSIDE THE ZIPPERED AREA OR WHERE IT SITS AGAINST THE BACK (NOT WHERE VISIBLE TO OTHERS WHEN WORN.)  All students MUST also bring labelled indoor shoes from the very first day – preferably comfortable running shoes that are slip on, have springy laces, or have Velcro fasteners.

School Calendar

View our School Calendar for upcoming events and dates. See the CBE website for system calendars.

Lunch Supervision

Northern Lights School has a fully supervised lunchroom program for students in Grades 1 to 5. Families must register online through their MyCBE Account. Registered students need to bring a reasonably sized nutritious lunch that they can eat in about 20 minutes or so. Although students are allotted 20-minutes to eat and 25-minutes to play, they may take additional time to eat if necessary. We have a paid lunchroom program that is fully staffed by Lunch Supervisors. Within this program, the Lunch Supervisors establish expectations and supervise students for the 45-minute lunch blocks.

Assigned Teachers

Welcome emails from classroom teachers will be sent to each family prior to the end of the day on Wednesday, August 31, 2021. For Grades 1 to 5, this is when students and families will know who their assigned classroom teacher will be. This email will also indicate the dedicated entry door for each child and where students in each grade will be asked to gather for first day entry. For students in Kindergarten, a message will be sent out informing families of where to meet both Kindergarten teachers on the first day.  (Kindergarten homeroom lists will not be finalized until September 9.)

Registration Information

Please visit our How to Register page for all registration details. Please note that the registration process is completed online, but schools can assist with any questions.  Our office staff at Northern Lights School will be available to answer phone calls beginning on Monday, August 29, 2022.

If you are coming to Northern Lights from another CBE school, please fill in a transfer request form along with proof of address to northernlights@cbe.ab.ca as soon as possible and we will contact you to confirm once we have processed the form.

It’s a mass communication tool that allows schools to easily and securely send email, phone and text messages to parents / guardians, independent students in a particular grade, class, school or area. Messages are sent to the parent contacts on file at your school.

Fees and Waivers

School fees will be charged to families starting in October. Online fee payment is the simplest and most convenient way to pay school fees. Parents can use their online account to pay fees or apply for a waiver at: www.cbe.ab.ca/mycbe.

You can find more information on the CBE school fees and waivers page.

Yellow School Bus Transportation

Yellow school bus routes for the 2023-24 school year are created over the summer and based on the addresses submitted before the pre-registration deadline in June. Transportation continues to accept registrations after the deadline; however, students are added to the closest existing stop with available space. Processing times could be up to six weeks at the beginning of the school year due to volume.

More information about 2023-24 transportation service levels and proposed fees are posted on the CBE website.

Your bus stop location and time will be available in your MyCBE account by mid-August.

Conditional riders can also register using MyCBE. Applications will be considered after eligible riders registrations have been processed. Should routes change or if qualified students are added to a route and the bus becomes overcrowded, conditional riders may be removed to accommodate these changes.

Learn more about transportation on the CBE website.
