Principal's Message

September 21, 2020

September 21, 2020
Dear Families,
It has been a great “repeated first week” with students settling into their new classes quickly. The teachers are so happy to welcome the new students and everyone is relieved to finally have their groups set. We thank the students and parents for patiently transitioning through the hurly-burly of the first weeks but now we are really ready to continue with deeper learning and a little bit of the “fun” around the school.
One important announcement we would like to share at this time is about our Grade 5 School patrols. At this point and for the foreseeable future we will not be doing School Patrols at the crosswalk. This is due to both distancing  difficulties as families cross the street (the patrollers will be too close to those walking through the crosswalk and we cannot ensure their safety), and the fact that our School Resource and S4 officers have been redeployed to the street due to the increase in calls because of Covid 19.
Meet the Teacher
“Meet the teacher” parent/student/teacher conferences will be happening Thursday, September 24 from 4 PM to 8 PM and Friday, September 25 from 8 AM to 12 PM. Due to the fact that visitors are not allowed in the building we will be doing them from a distance this year.
As in past years, families will sign up using their My CBE Account and conference manager. Parents will book a timeslot with the teacher who will call them the on phone at their allotted time. Families will have a chance to highlight the positives about their child’s learning and areas for improvement.  The purpose of this phone meeting is for teachers to get to know your child as a learner. We encourage you to make the child a part of the conversation.  This is just a chance for everyone in our school community to get to know each other and for teachers to gain a little bit of the amazing insights parents have about their children.
Conference manager will be up and available for bookings until Wednesday. You will be able to log in starting Friday, September 18. Conference Manager is here:
am excited to announce that we have a few special events coming up:
Orange Shirt Day
This year we will be observing Orange Shirt Day on September 30 to promote First Nations inclusion and identity. As well, we use Orange Shirt Day to commemorate the residential school experience, to witness and honor the healing journey of the survivors and their families, and to commit to the ongoing process of reconciliation. For more information, feel free to view the following video made by Mrs. Zinken:
Panorama Hills School Terry Fox Run 2020
This year marks the 40th anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope. Our school will participate in the run on Monday, September 28 and Tuesday, September 29. Each individual class will complete the run during their regular Physical Education time so cohort integrity can be maintained. Unfortunately, we are unable to invite parents to spectate or participate in the run this year.
Please help show your support by donating to our school’s online fundraising page as we will not be accepting cash donations this year. Thank you for supporting our school in the fight against cancer and keeping Terry’s dream alive!
Steve Harmer Motivational Magic
On Wednesday, September 23 at 9:30 AM we will be having our first virtual school special presentation. Steve Harmer will be presenting his new show entitled “Building Community.” This will be a wonderful opportunity for all PHS students to come together as a community for our first event.
This will be live streamed through Microsoft Teams. All in-person classes will be viewing the presentation on their Smart Board and HUB teachers will share the link on their Google classrooms. HUB students will be able to watch from home. We will also record the show as a backup plan in the event of technical difficulties.
We are very excited for this presentation as we have had Mr. Harmer in a few times before and he is absolutely amazing! If you would like to check him out, please feel free to visit his website at  He is a former school principal and uses magic to teach children great lessons of peace, love and care for each other.
Have a magical week!
