Security

Adults in the Building & School Access

At Piiotayis Family School, your child's safety is our top priority, and as such, it is important PFS has protocols to ensure ours school is secure. Like all CBE schools, PFS limits accessibility to our students during the school day.  Although, PFS is a family school, PFS has students who are in care or placed in guardianship, so we have to be diligent to ensure their well-being.

Piitoayis Family School (PFS) shares the facility with Colonel Walker School. PFS main doors are the blue doors on the old sandstone building. All outside doors to Piitoayis Family School are locked. This assists us in keeping the school safe and encourages all visitors to check-in at the main office as per fire regulations. To gain entry to the front door, please ring the bell and staff will unlock the door. If the children arrive late, they must enter at the front door and check in at the office for a late slip.

Sign-in Required

All parents and visitors are required to sign in at the office and are asked to wear a visitor/volunteer badge while in the school during the school day. Please be aware that all adults who are working with children in the school are required to complete a police security screening.

Supervision

Supervision starts at 8:25 AM. In the interest of safety, students should not be dropped off any earlier than 8:25 AM as the front doors are locked and there will not be supervision until this time. Students are escorted at the end of the day to their school bus at 3:05 PM.  If a student is being picked up, they are escorted and supervised in the pick-up room, and must be signed out by a parent, assigned driver, or a designated contact.  We do not send children outside to meet their caregivers in cars; adults must come into the building to pick up children.

Dropping off your Child

When dropping off your child, please bring them into the office to sign in.  Your child will then head to class alone.

Picking Up your Child

When you arrive to the school, please check in with Ms. Sharon in the main office.  The office will call your child down to the office while you wait on the chair(s). A sign-out book is kept inside the main office, and you will sign your child out before they leave with you. No student will be permitted to leave with an adult who is not on the student’s demographic list. There are times were a special arrangement for pick-up occurs, and for this to happen, parents can call the school office to let us know, send a note, or come in to the office to sign out the child.

Help us to be aware of any custody agreements that may dictate who your child is permitted to leave the school with. If you are picking your children up early for appointments or arrive late for pickup, please pick up your children at the main office. In the interest of safety, children are not to stand alone outside.

Note that upon dismissal, all students will be supervised to their assigned school bus by their teacher. If an alternate bus arrangement needs to be made, parents please call the office or send in a note including the date. Remember to arrive on time when picking up your child at the end of the school day.

Dropping off Items for the Classroom

If you are dropping off items for your child's classroom (ie. treats for birthday parties), check in with Ms. Sharon, who will take the item and call a student down to collect it.  PFS does not allow parents, siblings, or family members to bring items to the classroom.

Lost & Found

To check the lost and found, please come into the office and get a visitor's pass from Sharon.  You can go directly to the lost and found located on the North side of the main floor, then head back to the office and drop off the visitor's pass.

Lockdowns

All CBE schools are required to practice lockdowns in the same way that we practice fire drills. The procedures for lockdowns are developed with the Calgary Police Service and are part of each school’s Emergency Response Plan. If you have questions about lockdown drills or lockdown procedures, please contact your principal.

Evacuation Procedures

In the event that the school needs to be evacuated for any reason, all staff have been trained according to CBE standards. All schools have a primary and a secondary evacuation site. In the event of an evacuation, you will receive an email, phone or SMS notification from the school.
