Regular Program at the CBE

Even though most of our schools offer a regular program, no two are quite the same. All schools teach according to Alberta Education’s mandated curriculum, however a school’s focus, optional courses and school activities are as unique as every school.

Program, Focus & Approach

Homework

The Calgary Board of Education is desirous of promoting the development of good study habits. It believes that home study can contribute to this objective as well as to the reinforcement of learning. Two kinds of study are recognized, the completion of written or "hand-in" assignments, and the informal study of material related to the subjects under study in school. While the Board is anxious to promote the supportive role of the home in the child's education, it is anxious at the same time not to interfere with the child's pursuit of other wholesome non-school interests of educational, cultural, or recreational value. Please read the AR 3066 for further information.

Non-Instructional Days and Early Dismissals

Our Prairie Sky School annual calendars encompass the Alberta Education mandate of 180 teaching (instructional) days, with a minimum of 950 instructional hours/year for students in Grades 1 - 9, and 475 instructional hours for students in Kindergarten. Our annual calendar is published on the website – the Non-Instructional Days are set by the system and are common across the schools.

Our Prairie Sky School timetable is structured in a manner that classes consistently have access to Phys. Ed/Wellness and to Music, and to allow consistent time for grade gatherings, learning shares, assemblies, etc.

On Fridays, we dismiss at 11:35 am. Friday afternoons are used for teacher and staff professional development, organization and program improvements.

Middle Years at the CBE

Middle years learning refers to education offered to students between the ages of 10-15. These years are critical in keeping our students on the path to high school completion and their career futures. Keys for student success include: participating in hands-on, purposeful and relevant learning; creating positive relationships with peers, teachers and other adults; and being actively involved in the community and feeling supported by family, businesses and other organizations that surround them.

Learn more about our students in their middle years, including how their learning will change and how you can support your child, visit the CBE website.

Exploring Career Choices

For Grades 5 to 9 at the CBE, we offer Career & Technology Foundations (CTF). This is an inquiry-based, hands-on program that focuses on essential skills common to occupational areas, and our students personalize their learning based on their interests and passions.
