| Dear Prince of Wales Families, I am looking forward to welcoming our school community to the 2020-21 school year. I
want to assure you we are doing everything possible to ensure the health and safety of
all our community members.
As you are aware on July 21, Education Minister Adriana LaGrange announced that all
schools across the province will return to classes under Scenario 1 – in-school classes
resume (near normal with health measures). In response, plans are well underway in
our school to welcome our community of students as we adhere to current health
guidelines.
CBE’s Scenario 1 Information can be found on our website and outlines the measures
we are taking to provide for the health and safety of our students. Please refer to this
document for detailed information on health measures, physical set-up of schools,
cleaning of schools, daily operation of schools and transportation. The actions
described in the document follow the guidelines provided by Alberta Education’s K-12
School Re-entry COVID-19 information: Guidance for schools re-entry Scenario 1. We
continue to refine information in our re-entry planning based on provincial and CBE
guidance.
Sincerely,
Shelly Gelfand
Principal To access the re-entry plan, click on "Registration" then "Back to School Information" and you will see it on the right hand side under "Resources".

| Good Morning Students, Parents and Guardians of Prince of Wales,
I hope you are well and have had a restful and joyful spring break. We are indeed living in unprecedented times, and filled with wonder in terms of what the future will bring us with ongoing learning. For the foreseeable future, together we will delve into the world of online learning. The CBE has spent the past two weeks creating programming opportunities that will be distributed online for our students. Our teachers are taking up this work on a very steep learning curve to provide learning opportunities & activities that will begin in the next shortly.
Before you read the rest of this message, please know that we understand that all families are in different circumstances right now. We hope that you are in a position to support ongoing learning, but recognize that you may not be. Regardless of your family circumstances, we respect your position and are ready to assist you in whatever ways we can.
The morning of Monday, March 30, teachers will be involved in virtual meetings planning together in grade and subject teams. More detailed information about on-line learning will be sent to you later this week, with assignments starting next week.
Starting today your child’s homeroom teacher will connect with you to discuss your child’s access to technology at home, including access to a computer and the internet. Teachers will be emailing parents and requesting a response. Teachers will also ask you how you and your family are doing and encourage you to connect with wellness supports and resources available within and beyond the CBE.
Teachers will update their blogs with a “Welcome back” message to their students. Please be sure to check blogs on a regular basis as this will be where teachers will communicate learning to students and parents. As well we will continue to share a weekly update on the school website.
Parents may want to supplement student learning by providing their children with additional resources. The following provincial resources are available to parents:
We are very excited with the prospect of providing these ongoing learning opportunities for our students. Missing our students in the building has been very difficult, but we look forward to reconnecting with each student. Please look forward to receiving ongoing messages from teachers and administration in the days to come. Stay well and stay active.
Warmly,
Shelly Gelfand
Principal, Prince of Wales

| Dear Prince of Wales Families,
Thank you to all members of our school community for your cooperation and adherence to the guidelines outlined by AHS during the retrieval of personal items. For those members who still have personal belongings within the school, rest assured that they will be safe and available upon our eventual return to school. For those families with medical supplies stored at the office, please contact the main office to make an arrangement for pick up on Friday.
March break is to continue as planned for the week of March 23-27, 2020. I ask all Prince of Wales School community members, including our staff, to recognize this is a “break” and is meant to be a time to enjoy family and to stay safe. During March Break, I anticipate communication will be less frequent, I still encourage you to check your email for system messages, and I will re-connect with our community after the March break.
We continue to better understand the unusual and challenging events of classroom cancellation. We do not want to overwhelm students and families with programming expectations or offerings while we settle into day 5 of this new reality. In addition, it is important that consistent messaging and resources are offered to students across the CBE and Alberta. The resources found on the CBE “Learning At Home” webpage have been reviewed by CBE staff; they offer wonderful learning opportunities for students to engage in. Again, I encourage everyone to become involved in things that interest them and provide some physical and mental rigor. Maintaining a balanced and consistent routine for children; including regular sleeping and eating times, breaks for activity and outdoor time, and healthy boundaries on screen time are very important to bringing normalcy to our days.
This week has been filled with many mixed emotions. Hallways and classrooms are quiet and simply make up the structure of a building. Children’s laughter and energy is greatly missed and is clearly what make Prince of Wales a strong and vibrant school. As we learn new words and protocols such as social distancing and self-isolation, we also contemplate things that matter most as we face uncertainty. Uncertainty is heavy! However, this notion of a “new normal” offers up the opportunity to re-align and take note of what is most important, what is truly valued and connect with loved ones.
I would never have thought that I would be quoting the Chief Medical Officer of Health in Alberta, Dr. Hinshaw, but her advice is now more important than ever. Dr. Hinshaw tweeted, “The days and months ahead will be difficult for all of us. We need to face this pandemic together and respond to this extraordinary crisis with extraordinary kindness. I want to remind Albertans: it is together that we will overcome.”
Take a deep breath, be kind to one another and take care of yourself, family and friends.
Warmly,
Shelly Gelfand

| How Is My Child Doing In School?
We know it is important for parents/guardians to understand how their children are doing in school. The report card is one component in communicating student learning. Another component of communication comes at conferences. The CBE has produced some new resources related to the report card for parents to help them learn more about their child’s learning. The link below will take you to the page on our website where these resources live.
Of particular interest will be the document titled “How Is My Child Doing in School?”
If you would like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me at the school.
Our next round of conferences are scheduled for Thursday, November 21 & Friday, November 22. Please watch for a message inviting you to book your conferences online.
Photo retake day is Tuesday. If you would like your child to have a retake, please return the original photo day proof or a handwritten note to allow your child to return to the camera.
Our first rotation of Power Hour begins on Thursday, November 7th. We are very excited to see all of this learning in action.
Our grade 2 team has been preparing for our Remembrance Day assembly. The assembly will be held Friday, November 8 at 10:30. All families are welcome to attend this assembly.
We are excited to host Calgary Opera performance of Sleeping Beauty on November 12 @ 9:30 am. A special thank you to Friends of Parkland Way for supporting this performance for our students.

| Field Trip Notices
Please know that all field trip notices will be posted to the classroom blogs and messaged out. No paper copies will go home. We are asking parents to print off the forms, fill them out and return to school. Our preferred method of payment is through our ‘MY CBE’ account online. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher or the office.
We are looking to replenish our supply of extra clothing. If you have any boys and girls pants to donate we would love to have them.
Thank you to everyone that came out to enjoy the fun last night at the dance. The event was well attended and many cool dance moves were observed on the dance floor. Thank you to the grade 6’s who ran the concession stand, together with the parents. And a big thank you to parent council and the numerous volunteers who planned, organized, counted tickets & money and put up decorations.
Friday, November 1 – Non – Instructional Day – No School
Tuesday, November 5 – Picture Retakes
All volunteers within a CBE school are required to have a police clearance to work in the school and go on field trips. These clearances are valid for 5 years in any CBE school. If you need to complete a clearance, please bring 1 piece of government ID to the school to start the process. |
| Reminder:
Kindergarten Non-Instructional Day - Monday, October 21st
Painting
The painting of the school has been completed. All of the common areas have received a fresh coat of paint. The school is looking clean and refreshed. Many thanks to the team of painters who worked after school hours. We appreciate all of your work.
Halloween celebrations will only take place in the afternoon. Students are invited to wear their costumes all day. Please NO masks, gory costumes or weapons. Please see class blogs regarding the classroom specifics.
The final total is in @ $6788.00. Although this is not the goal of $9000.00, it is to be commended and acknowledged. It is because of this, that Mrs. Gelfand will still take a pie in the face. This will occur at an assembly on Friday, October 25th @ 10:30.
Our first round of PoWer hour will start in November. Forms for choices will be coming home on Tuesday, October 15th and are due Friday, October 18. Check out the school website to see the choices. You can find this under Extracurricular then Clubs.
Lunchroom fees have been added to CBE Accounts. For some, there was a duplication of the April fee; this has been corrected. Thanks for your patience.
Thank you to the parent volunteers who work to set up, coordinate for our school and help to pass out lunches. Healthy Hunger has corrected the main page for school selection so there should be no further difficulties with setting up your account and ordering lunches. For assistance with your healthy hunger account you can contact them directly for support at 1-800-818-6260.
The annual Hallowe’en dance is on Thursday, October 24th from 6:30-8:00 pm. All families are invited to join in the fun. Doors open at 6:30pm. Come dance up a storm dressed in your Hallowe’en costumes.
Next Council meeting is on Wednesday, November 13th @ 6:30pm. |

| Orange Shirt Day
This past Monday, our grade 5/6 students lead our Orange Shirt Day assembly. Students and staff wore orange to show our support for promoting reconciliation through welcoming, caring, respectful, safe and inclusive school communities.
Our lost and found is overflowing. Please remind your children to look though the items to claim any of their lost items. The lost & found is located at the back side of the gym in the hallway.
We love volunteers! Teachers have begun planning for in-school and out-school field trips. If you have not yet completed your police clearance with a CBE school, please stop by the office to begin the process. All adults are required to have a completed police clearance before volunteering in the school.
As the weather is beginning to change, please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately to go outside everyday. Students are outside twice a day getting fresh air for recess breaks.
Our next school council meeting will be held on Thursday, October 17th. This meeting will be broken up into two sections:
6:30 – 7:30 – Parent Workshop – Online Safety
7:30 – 8:30 – Council Meeting – Gr. 2 teachers will be sharing
Power Hour is beginning on November 7 – more information will follow shortly

Please check out our school website for events, blog updates and calendar information.
