School Access

Most entrance and exit locations for children are located at doors on the west, northwest and northeast sides of the school. These doors have been assigned with safety in mind – so that children are not rushing out a door into high traffic areas. Parents picking up their children should choose an area near these exit locations to meet their children – hopefully in an outside location.

Visitors & Volunteers Sign-In

All volunteers and visitors to the school are required to sign in at the school office and wear a volunteer tag. Parents take comfort in knowing that every adult in our school is accounted for and their purpose for being here known. This process is not designed to inconvenience you. It is designed to inconvenience those without a legitimate reason to be in our school. When a staff member asks, “Have you signed in at the office?” please remember they are doing it out of concern for your child’s safety.

Staff Supervision

Staff supervision teams are designated to the compound area, creative playground areas, and field area. Supervisors wear bright safety vests so they are easily spotted if students need them. Supervision of students is provided 15 minutes before the morning and afternoon sessions and during morning recess. Students are expected to arrive at school only at times when they can be assured the grounds are supervised (7:45 – 8:00 AM). Students at school for extracurricular activities are supervised by the staff member(s) in charge.

Emergency Procedures

The Emergency Response Plan (ERP) at Prince of Wales is designed to keep students safe and keep parents informed in the event of an emergency. ERP procedures are reviewed regularly and follow appropriate school board regulations and provincial or federal legislation. Students are taught fire drill and lockdown procedures in their classes. Fire drills are held at least six times during the year – usually with no warning. During the fire drill, all students will be required to leave the school; therefore, all students should be equipped with some type of inside footwear that should be worn at all times.

Lockdowns

All CBE schools are required to practice lockdowns in the same way that we practice fire drills. The procedures for lockdowns are developed with the Calgary Police Service and are part of each school’s Emergency Response Plan. If you have questions about lockdown drills or lockdown procedures, please contact your principal.

Evacuation Procedures

In the event that the school needs to be evacuated for any reason, all staff have been trained according to CBE standards. All schools have a primary and a secondary evacuation site. In the event of an evacuation, you will receive an email, phone or SMS notification from the school.
