Dear Ramsay School Families,

This the final Monday Message of the 2021-2022 school year! Have a wonderful summer ahead. I hope it includes a just-right amount of fun, adventure and rejuvenation.

Thanks for everything, Ramsay. You are amazing!

Welcome, Mr. Turner!

Last Friday afternoon, it was announced that Mr. Shane Turner has been appointed as Ramsay School's new principal. Mr. Turner has a wealth of experience and knowledge that he brings to Ramsay and sincerely looks forward to getting to know each of the students and families at Ramsay in the fall.

Grade 6 Farewell

This afternoon at 1:00 p.m. we will get to honor our Grade 6 students and say farewell. It will be an awesome afternoon celebrating their accomplishments with families. Thank you to Mrs. MacLeod, Mrs. McGrath and Mrs. Serra for supporting the students around their Grade 6 farewell celebration.

Activity Day Fun

It was a wet and windy Activity Day, but also very fun. Our Student Council members did a great job running the horseshoe station, barrel racing, line dancing and a few other stations. The students loved the lasso art with their buddies. Thanks to the parents who helped organize and support the fun hotdog food truck for the students during Activity Day and for Carol who organized Harry the Horse to come down from the Stampede to visit.

Online Report Card Viewing Begins Tomorrow, June 28th, 2022

Online report cards will be enabled for viewing from June 28, 2022 (8 a.m.) to July 28, 2022 (8 a.m.) through your PowerSchool Account. During this window, legal guardians are welcome to view report cards online.

We would like to say farewell to some members of our staff and thank them for all that they have brought to Ramsay School. We wish our Educational Assistant Ms. Vaishali the best of luck in her new adventures and thank her for her years of service at Ramsay School. Good-bye to both Miss Yasin and Mrs. Serra who have held temporary positions this year. Mrs. Serra is looking forward to traveling with her husband and subbing next year. Congratulations and farewell to Mrs. Arlene McGrath who has accepted a part-time teaching position at Hawkwood School and to Mrs. Chantelle Tonkin who has accepted a new position at Copperfield School.

Welcome, Emilia Arnone, to Ramsay School as the new Music Specialist. Miss Arnone has a passion for Music instruction and plays the piano, ukulele, guitar, clarinet and saxophone! Happy Father's Day to all of the amazing Ramsay Dads. Hope it was a fantastic day!

Welcome to the new School Council Executive for Ramsay School! All parents and guardians of Ramsay School are members of School Council. Thanks again to all of our out-going members. Here's a short video that I created to say goodbye and thank you to our school community, shared at the last Council Meeting. Parents, truly, it's been an honor getting to know your kids and working with your families.

Celebrating Students this Week

We are so excited to celebrate our Kindergarten students this week. Mrs. Tonkin is inviting all current Ramsay School Kindergarten parents into the in-person assembly in our school gym at 10:00 on Thursday morning. Mrs. Tonkin and Ms. Erin have worked diligently to support the Kindergarten students this year and assist with their transition to Grade 1.

Ramsay's Commitment to TRC Continues

We are also very much looking forward to honoring National Indigenous People's Day on Tuesday. Classroom teachers have done an amazing job taking up the work of Ramsay School's Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation throughout the 2021-2022 school year. Please see the 2022-2023 commitment posted on our school's website.

Activity Day: Friday, June 24th

Ramsay School Celebrates Literacy on Friday, June 10th

Thank you to the students and staff who dressed up as a favorite book character in honor of celebrating literacy at Ramsay School last Friday. Thank you, also, to the families who helped us raise “loonies for literacy" through Education Matters. We appreciate your support! The campaign runs until June 30th.

If you wish to donate $5 by text to Ramsay School's campaign, simply text LITERACY RAMSAY or LITERACYRAMSAY to 30333 and Education Matters will make sure to add the funds to our Loonies for Literacy total. All donations will show up on the donor's cell bill the following month. Please see here for more information around progress towards our goal!

Honoring National Indigenous Peoples Day and TRC at Ramsay School

National Indigenous Peoples Day is a day for all across Canada to learn more about the cultural and linguistic diversity and the contributions of the First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. As shared through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Calls to Action, in order for Canada to flourish in the twenty-first century, reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples is critical. Truth and reconciliation requires learning and action.

To further acknowledge and support the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action, all CBE schools will share their renewed TRC Commitment to Action with their school community on June 21 in honour of National Indigenous Peoples Day. Throughout June, schools will be engaged in the process of reflection to renew their TRC Commitments to Action. Ramsay School shared our evidence of actions for the 2021-2022 school year at our May School Council Meeting.

Throughout the year, each of our grade groups have taken up the celebration of special occasions and our Kindergarten students are honoring National Indigenous People's Day through a sharing assembly with their parents on the morning of June 23rd. Our Grades 1-6 classrooms will also honor this day by watching and learning a beautiful song shared with the CBE by Cree/Métis Knowledge Keeper Chantal Chagnon and engaging in other learning that braids Indigeous ways of knowing and understanding.

Stampede Fundraiser: Please Sign Up and Volunteer and Support Ramsay School!

We are so grateful and lucky to have had amazing learning enhancements for students at Ramsay School, at no cost to parents! Please see the message below from our awesome Stampede Fundraiser Committee:

Please support Ramsay School students by volunteering your time during the Stampede Parking Fundraiser. Currently families aren't asked to pay fees for residencies, field trips, and other opportunities. This is because those volunteer hours support fundraisers that generate enough money to cover these fees. Volunteers are needed to run the fundraisers. Thank you to those who have signed up! If you haven't signed up please do so as soon as you can. If there are not enough volunteers, Parent Association will be unable to run the fundraiser. Please sign up by June 24th at https://www.stampedeparking.com/volunteer

Lost and Found

Parents, please pop into the front entrance of the school to collect your child's items. Thank you for your help with this.

Dear Ramsay School Families,

Here's hoping your June has started off well! It's the time of year when planning for the 2022-2023 school year is well underway. Parents, please keep us updated around any changes to registration information for the fall. As previously shared, a number of variables are considered when creating class lists. After schools reopen in August, you will receive an email from the office with your child's classroom placement. This is also when staffing is finalized. We will keep you updated around information related to Ramsay School's new principal appointment. Thank you to the parents who shared input in the new principal survey. Results will be shared with the new principal as a part of their entry planning into Ramsay School.

Also, thanks to those who were able to join us for our drop-in Terrace Tea!

Student Council's Legacy Project

This year at Ramsay School, the Student Council members decided to create a legacy project using chairs as canvases. Students were inspired to 'leave something behind' for future students to enjoy and use. A few other student-created projects at Ramsay School inspired this idea (the awesome trees in the Learning Commons!) First, we thought about the idea of legacy and then wondered about creating art that would 'age well' and inspire other kids, staff and families. We needed to choose themes that matter! After that, we spent a lot of time designing using symbols, colors and quotes. When we were ready to put our plans to action, we got some help from parents to sand our chairs and then got started painting and creating. Each of us wrote an artist statement about our chairs and ourselves, as artists. Enjoy viewing some of our process!

Sincerely, Student Council 2021-2022

Celebrating Literacy at Ramsay – Friday, June 10th

On Friday June 10th, we are encouraging all of our students and staff to dress as their favorite book character and bring a Loonie to donate.

Thanks and have a great week!

Dear Ramsay School Families,

We are looking forward to our “Volunteer Terrace Tea" this Thursday morning. The theme of this celebration is in honor of Ramsay parents and guardians who have volunteered their time supporting Ramsay School and is centered around: “The Tree in Me." This anchor text for our school has reminded us again and again that we are a community. Thanks for what you do as parents to support your own children, but also for spreading kindness and acceptance to all of our students and their families. Everyone belongs at Ramsay School. Lastly, thanks for sending along your RSVP to Ms. Calhoun so we can plan accordingly!

Kindness Challenge:

Students enjoyed their time with “Frisbee Rob" and we are looking forward to sharing information around the Kindness Challenge that will take us through to the end of June. Thank you to Mrs. Tonkin for spearheading this for our school and to all of our amazing teachers who take this work up daily inside classrooms.

As the end-of-year approaches, we still have rich learning happening and lots of celebrations around student growth to share. The Grade 2/3 students are off to the Calgary Zoo this week to deepen their understanding of animal life cycles and habitat preservation.

Learning Commons Update:

Mrs. Haydu has been busy throughout the year organizing our Maker Centers and library collection for student use. We are excited to announce that a new LEGO Wall will be installed inside the Learning Commons and should be ready to go for Fall, 2022! Parents, thank you for returning your child's borrowed library books. Mrs. Haydu needs time to process these returns and will be asking for these to come back in the next few weeks. Students will be limited on the number of books they borrow during the month of June.

Thanks and have a great week ahead,

Jill Scarrow

Thank you to the parents who joined us last Wednesday evening to share input around Ramsay School's opportunities for residencies for the 2022-2023 school year. We appreciate your ideas and input. Please do share your feedback around the new Ramsay School Principal survey, as the CBE welcomes input from parents. Education Directors would be pleased to receive your insights regarding what you value at Ramsay School, along with the leadership attributes you value in a principal. The survey runs until Monday, May 30th, 2022.

Farewell Message to Ramsay School Community: 05/20/2022

Dear Ramsay School Families,

It is with mixed emotions that I would like to announce that I have accepted a position as principal at Andrew Sibbald School for the 2022-2023 school year. It has been an amazing three years serving the students, families, and staff at Ramsay School. Ramsay has incredible community, vibrancy, and heart. I feel extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to develop strong working relationships with many of you. I am so proud of the work that we have done together and have strong confidence that the commitment to ensuring excellent learning continues at Ramsay School.

Parents, thank you for your support and advisement. Your engagement and commitment to your children and their educational outcomes is inspiring. Your volunteerism has been incredible, as has been your thoughtful approach to equity and compassion towards all Ramsay students and families. Thanks for being awesome partners.

Lastly, I am very appreciative of the students that I have had the opportunity to work with during my time at Ramsay. Seeing their resilience throughout the pandemic, the way they have been able to demonstrate an abundance of generosity of patience, kindness, and care towards those in their classrooms and greater community in Calgary has inspired me. Students: I have learned so much from your voices, your convictions, and your creativity!

Sincerely,

Jill Scarrow

  • Resiliency/Growth Mindset: Learning from failure, and valuing practice.
  • Unplugg'd Challenge: building self-discipline by setting screen time limits.

Technology & Children's Mental Health

Today, digital technologies are everywhere. Technology has created some beautiful things, like communications assistive technology for children who don't use speech as their primary communication method. At the same time, there are also some problematic aspects to navigate, like cyberbullying. The Life Lines May newsletter explores where children are currently sitting with the effects of digital technology predominantly within four groups: babies and toddlers, school-age children, teens, and young adults. The newsletter shares tools you may find helpful to support your child interacting with technology in a way that is developmentally-appropriate and supports their overall health and well-being.

Thanks, and have a great week ahead.

Sincerely,

Monday Message: April 25, 2022

Dear Ramsay School Families,

On Friday, April 22nd, Ramsay School celebrated Earth Day. Thank you to Ms. Paradis for organizing a school-wide clean up that was postponed due to the snowfall! Thank you, also, to Ms. Rowland for her beautiful reflection around this event: “This week our intention was to go out and complete a community clean up and explore to find more evidence of spring, but Mother Nature had a different idea! Instead we went out and Na'a (Mother Earth) provided us with a huge dump of snow to examine, discuss and explore. This fresh snow provided us with the opportunity to build on our vocabulary of words to describe snow, sleet and water as well as to explore the different properties of water (I can describe the properties of water and other liquids. I can understand the importance of water for living things.) It also gave us the opportunity to build and create art using the medium of snow. Students enjoyed the challenge of creating different designs and used tools (their own bodies) to write and leave prints in the snow. Then they moved onto the challenge of using the building blocks of snow to build and work together as a team to build a snow creation."

Registering for Kindergarten? Check out this great resource from the Calgary Public Library!

Parents if you know a family coming to Ramsay School for kindergarten next year, and they haven't yet registered, please encourage them to do so here. Also, the Calgary Public Library is helping families prepare children for school with a free tote bag filled with Library books. Visit the Library nearest you to pick up a Kindergarten Book Bag, or place an order on the website and pickup later. Each bag comes with a special bookmark, tips to help your child get ready for school, and books chosen specifically for your child's reading level.

Please Save the Date: A Free online event for families!

Please join the free online event, 'Starting a Social Media Conversation' for Ramsay School families on Wednesday May 4 at 6:30pm On Google Meet. More information is included on the paper flyers that will be sent home with your child (if they haven't been already).

Have a great week ahead,
