Volunteer with Us

While COVID-19 Measures are in Place

In-person visitors and volunteers will not be allowed in CBE schools at this time. This includes guest speakers, sports-team coaches and artists in residence. Individuals are encouraged to communicate with the school through email or by phone. Currently, parent volunteers are not permitted in the school building. However, we are optimistic that we will find ways to work with parent volunteers later in the school year.

Please visit our COVID-19 page for the most up-to-date information. Our plan is subject to change throughout the school year as more information becomes available.

We welcome volunteers in the classroom, on field trips and with certain tasks at school or at home. Certain activities or field trips would not be possible without the active participation of our volunteers. Contact us about ways you can volunteer with our school.

Visit the CBE website for more information on volunteering, including the required registration and Police Information Check. (Please note, guest speakers or visitors to the school, and parents/guardians assisting their own child only are not considered to be volunteers and do not require a police information check.)

Volunteering for an Off-Site Activity

If you want to volunteer for an off-site activity, please keep in mind:

  • Volunteers on an activity are considered representatives of the Calgary Board of Education and are subject to the same expectations as staff
  • Volunteers are subject to the requirements of CBE Administrative Regulation 5003 – Volunteers, which includes an application and a police security screening check
  • Volunteers are covered by the CBE’s liability insurance policy while performing their assigned duties
  • Volunteers are covered by WCB while performing their duties
  • Volunteers receive direction from and are accountable to the teacher-in-charge

Volunteers at Richmond School

Volunteers are an important support to our school program and are potential advocates for our school and for public education. When working with volunteers, please keep the following in mind:

Volunteer code of ethics

  • The volunteer must be discreet. It is essential that a volunteer never publicly discuss children, parents or school staff.
  • The volunteer works in the school at the invitation of the professional staff.
  • The volunteer must respect the professional role and judgment of the teacher.
  • The volunteer should refer any discipline problems to the teacher

Please ask for a Volunteer Handbook if you would like to Volunteer at Richmond School.

The staff and students of Richmond School welcome and encourage parents and community members to volunteer their time in any capacity during the school year. Volunteers have proven to be a  valuable asset to the overall success of our school community and the experience provides volunteers with an insight into the total operation of the school. All Calgary Board of Education school volunteers are required to obtain police security clearance status. Security clearance application forms can be obtained from the CBE website.

We encourage all of Richmond School parents to pursue the clearance process. It has been our experience that unexpected opportunities can arise for parents to volunteer, and without having obtained prior clearance, the school is placed in the unfortunate position of having to deny parents participation in an event. We hope to establish a strong and vibrant core of volunteers. As this  process evolves, classroom teachers and the school at large will communicate the many anticipated volunteer opportunities that will require your support. Be sure to fill out the online Richmond Volunteer Form – this is a wonderful place to start!
