There are many opportunities for students to earn and achieve financial support for post-secondary studies.
Students should actively seek out and research all available financial support. They can see their guidance counselor for more details. As scholarships and bursaries have firm guidelines and application deadlines, students should leave themselves ample time to complete the application process. Students should make note of all deadlines and ensure they have all documentation in on time. There are many opportunities available for scholarship outside of grade 12 as well. It is never too soon to begin to seek out opportunities and to apply.
A scholarship is awarded first on the basis of academic achievement while a bursary is awarded primarily on the basis of financial need. Neither has to be repaid. More Information is available from The Success Centre.
Many post-secondary institutes and scholarship granting agencies, require references. Teachers and administration write many letters for students. Being specific in the purpose of the reference letter and ensuring students allow ample time to
complete the letter is always very helpful and makes for a stronger reference in the end.

Once you have applied to a Post-Secondary School, you have access to their awards and scholarships. There are binders in the Success Centre with copies of various scholarships for you look into and get ideas.

Alexander Rutherford Scholarship
gr 10 average 75-79.9% = $300 80+% = $400
gr 11 average 75-79.9% = $500 80+% = $800

Kiwanis Bursary: To recognize teens who believe in making a difference in their communities, the Kiwanis Club of Calgary Chinook will award two bursaries, each in the amount of $1000.00, to 2 graduating students from Robert Thirsk High School. The recipients will exemplify the school’s commitment to students being learners, leaders, but especially citizens through their involvement in service to their community. The students selected are planning to pursue post-secondary studies at a recognized Canadian technical institute, college or university in September 2019. Information available in the Success Centre. Education Matters and Calgary Foundation scholarships/awards are now open. Deadline: May 2019. Here is a peak at some of the awards:
Benjamin Albert Award – for post-secondary studies in trades, or apprenticeships.
Bree Eriksen Memorial Dance Award– post-secondary studies (major or minor) in Dance. Grade 12 min avg 75>#/p###
Bruce Leitl Composition Award– for those passionate about music. Compose and perform an original piece.
Doris Donald Memorial Bursary in Fine Arts – for Grade 10, 11 or 12 students demonstrating artistic ability
Hal Winlaw Health & Nutrition Legacy Award – for post-secondary studies in any pathway for health and nutrition
University of Lethbridge Scholarships: The deadline to apply is March 15th, 2019.
University of Lethbridge - Merit Award for Grade 11 students to apply for – if they are interested in applying to U of L next year. (apply in Grade 11)
RBC Students Leading Change Scholarship: As students across Canada continue to invest in their education, many are taking the time to invest in their communities as well. In recognition of the growing number of Canadian students showing a passion to lead and inspire positive change in their community, we have created the RBC Students Leading Change Scholarship. Application opens Feb 20/19
June Callwood Harmony Scholarships: recognizes the outstanding achievements of youth in promoting harmony and diversity across Canada. Our scholarships aim to recognize young leaders who have taken action to challenge discrimination and inequity in their communities. Provided by: Harmony Movement$1,000(x10) Applications open: March 1st, 2019
Women in Aviation Scholarship: one time only scholarship of $1000 to be given to an aviation student at an accredited institution (or equivalent). Deadline for application May 31.
Local 38 Scholarship – for students who have a parent/guardian who is a current, retired or deceased member of Calgary Public Teachers. Students need to be attending post-secondary in fall 2019. Deadline to apply is May 31
Retail Education Scholarship: Eligibility: enrolled at a Canadian college or university for Fall 2019, Currently pursuing a retail, business, fashion, marketing or any other retail related post-secondary program and working within the retail industry.
Lorne Dowling Memorial Bursary: awarded to a student entering St Mary’s University (Calgary) from high school with good academic achievement into the first year of a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree at St. Mary’s University. Students must demonstrate volunteer service in high school, their parish or their community, and be in need of financial assistance. Application Deadline: April 15
Indigenous Arts and Stories
The contest is open to Canadians of Indigenous ancestry (self-identified Status, Non-Status, Inuit and Métis) between the ages of 6 and 29. Create a writing or art piece that explores Indigenous heritage or culture. Your entry into the Indigenous Arts & Stories competition must include a 200-400 word artist’s or author’s statement that includes a few words about you and explains how your piece explores Indigenous heritage and culture. You may enter online or by mail Deadline to apply: March 31
A Voice for Animals Contest: Deadline: April 30. 3 sections
- 14-15 year old section are invited to either write an essay that addresses one of the following: the mistreatment of one animal species or one cause of animal suffering and present ideas to raise awareness of this species and what can be done to protect it. Or write an essay that addresses the impact of climate change on the animal population and discusses how oneanimal species has been affected by climate change and presents ideas to raise awareness of this species and what can be done to protect it.
- 16-18 year old essay section: write an essay that addresses either the mistreatment of oneanimal species, or one cause of animal suffering, or the preservation of one endangered species, and potential solutions to alleviate animal suffering,
- 16-18 year old Essay with Photos or Video section You must become involved in a project (new or pre-existing) that addresses the mistreatment of one animal species, one cause of animal suffering; or the preservation of one endangered species, occurring anywhere in the world
Ayn Rand Essay contest Deadline: April 29. Open to Grade 11 and 12 students. Submit an original essay on selected themes from Ayn Rand’s “The Fountainhead”
Anna and John Kolesar Memorial Scholarship be graduating from an Alberta high school, from a family where neither parent obtained a university degree and applied to a Faculty of Education in Alberta
