Security

We take safety and security seriously. It is important that we maintain a safe and caring community so that learning can take place.

Visitors & Volunteers

Our school is a closed campus. All visitors and volunteers must report directly to the main office to sign-in and request permission from the school administration to be in the school. This process helps us know where you are in case of an emergency and allows staff and students to know you have signed-in with the office staff by wearing your volunteer/visitor badge.

In order to ensure school security, all exterior doors will be locked after school commences each day. Anyone who is not a student or school staff member is required to sign-in.

Supervision

Supervision is provided from 8:25 AM until school starts at 8:45 AM. Students should not be on the property before 8:25 AM unless they are in a supervised activity. Students who occasionally need to be dropped off before 8:25 AM and who are not in a supervised activity need to be on their best behavior or the privilege of arriving early will be removed. Remember that bused students must remain on the property when their buses arrive at the school in the morning.

Closed Campus Expectations

Bused students are required to remain on school property during the lunch hour. Parents of bused students may give their children permission to leave campus on a given day by completing the permission form available from the office or on the school website. In doing so, parents are assuming the risk of any hazards that students may encounter while off school property. Remember the school provides no supervision off campus.

After eating their lunch, students are to go out to the back fields to get some fresh air or may remain in the school to participate in a supervised activity. Students need to have adequate outdoor clothing especially for the winter lunch hours.

Students residing in Canyon Meadows are expected to go home for lunch and return by the 12:51 PM warning bell. If parents of Grade 6 students would like them to stay at school during the lunch hour, complete the form available on the CBE website and understand that CBE noon supervision fees will apply. Parents may give permission by phone for those students to go home at lunch.

Custody Arrangements

Make sure the school is aware of any specific legal orders regarding the custody of students, and keep the school informed of any changes in custodial status. Unless court orders are contained in the student’s file, both parents are regarded as having joint custody.

Student Searches

In the event that school safety and security is a concern administration has the right to complete searches of student lockers, student property or personal belongings at any time.

Lockdowns

All CBE schools are required to practice lockdowns in the same way that we practice fire drills. The procedures for lockdowns are developed with the Calgary Police Service and are part of each school’s Emergency Response Plan. If you have questions about lockdown drills or lockdown procedures, please contact your principal.

Evacuation Procedures

In the event that the school needs to be evacuated for any reason, all staff have been trained according to CBE standards. All schools have a primary and a secondary evacuation site. In the event of an evacuation, you will receive an email, phone or SMS notification from the school.
