June 12-16

Lang Arts- We are working on a persuasive writing unit. Student's are learning to debate, form opinions, writing persuasive letters etc. We are currently trying to persuade Mrs. Palmer to let us have a class party at the end of the year. 

Math - Our unit on division continues. The grade 5's are working on learning new strategies to divide 2 and 3 digit numbers and the grade 4's are focused on finding efficient strategies for 2 digit by 1 digit division problems. 

Science- Our unit comes to an end this week. We had fun learning about Plants and Wetlands.

Important Information

-Science test for all grade 4s and 5s on TUESDAY June 13.

-Our Human Sexuality Health unit begins on Tuesday. Please make sure to return paperwork if you would like your child to OPT OUT of this curriculum.

May 15-19th

Lang Arts- We are finishing up our work on biographies this week. They will be due soon!

Math- This week we will be continuing to practice multiplication strategies, and also diving into division concepts.

Gym- Our soccer unit continues this week, working on skills like dribbling, passing, shooting and fair play/sportsmanship.

Social Studies/Science: Our Social Studies unit is coming to an end, and we are beginning our new science units. Grade 5 students will be learning about Wetlands and Grade 4 students will be learning about Plants. 

*We have a field trip on Monday May 15th, exploring a local wetland with Inside Education!

April 24-28th

Lang Arts- We are finishing up the last of our Genius Hour presentations this week. Students are going to be bringing home their Genius Hour dioramas, posters, sculptures etc. They will also be receiving a mark on their presentation, and having a meeting with Mrs. Reid to talk about their mark and get some feedback.

Math- In Math we are continuing to learn and practice multi digit multiplication strategies. So far we have learned the standard algorithm, the box method, and the Break It Up strategy. Ask your child to show you what they have learned, and what strategy they prefer so far.

Gym- We are doing Mission Impossible this week! 

Social Studies: We have begun new projects in Social Studies, and the grade 4's and 5's are learning about Notable Canadians (grade 5) and Notable Albertan's (grade 4). Ask your child who they are researching, and some interesting facts they have learned so far. 

**Grade 5 students received their New France Project/mark back. If any grade 5 student would like to REDO their project for Mrs. Ryogoku- they need to have it finished and submitted by this Friday.

March 20 - 24th

Lang Arts- This week is very exciting as we are building and creating wonderful projects to support our Genius Hour nonfiction reports. Our classroom is chaos but in the BEST way. We are building claymation scenes, lego stop motion videos, Imovies, paper mache and SO MUCH MORE.

Math- We are continuing to work with decimals this week. We are using decimals to solve word problems, and comparing decimals, fractions etc. 

Gym- This week we are playing our FAVOURITE games! 

Science- We have a Unit test on Thursday. Grade 4 test is on simple machines and building, and grade 5 test is about electricity and magnetism.

Feb 21-24th

Lang Arts-Our Genius hour work continues! This week we have been working on writing sentences for our main ideas and continuing our research.

Math-We are working on our tenths and hundredths this week, and writing fractions as decimals and vice versa. We are also continuing to work with coins and money.

Gym- This is our last week of badminton!

Science- Grade 4 students are making pop can dragsters in science, and grade 5 students are learning about electricity, magnets, and circuits.

Important Info:

-We are happy to report that we shall be returning to in person book fairs, so on that note, we are building our Book Fair Team! The Scholastic Book Fair at our school is scheduled for Thursday March 9th 3.30 to 7.00 pm and Friday March 10th 8.30 am to 12.00 pm. If you are interested in volunteering please email Mel in the office with your available times and she can schedule you in.  You MUST have an up-to-date CBE volunteer clearance in order for me to schedule you to volunteer.

Lang Arts-We have started some new and exciting things in Language Arts. We are starting to learn about Informational writing and have been practicing with the structure of how to write reports. Students have chosen their genius hour topic and are starting the question and research process!

Math-We are continuing to work on rounding, using a grid to round, and also reviewing place value. We will be starting decimals soon! 

Gym- We have had the pleasure of welcoming Mr.Alex in to teach us about hip hop and student's have been learning a new routine.

Happy New Year!! We are off to a busy and great start. 

Social Studies- Grade 4 and 5 students are working on a research project to learn more about the First Nation's people in Alberta and across Canada. 

Lang Arts-We have started some new and exciting things in Language Arts. We are starting to learn about Informational writing and have been practicing with the structure of how to write reports. We are also going to be starting our GENIUS HOUR project and students will be responsible for self directed research and writing on a topic of their choice. More info to come! Our new read aloud is called: The Boundless. Check out the synopsis below:

Math-We are continuing to practice with place value and review this week. We are also practicing with rounding and using a number line to help us round numbers in the 10s, 100s and 1000s.  

Gym- We learned several new Dodgeball games this week!

Dec 5-9

November 21-25th 

Science-Grade 4 students have a test on Monday November 28th on their unit about Light and Shadow. Grade 5 students have an assignment on Separating Mixtures due. 

Lang. Arts-We have started a story writing unit! Students will be learning more about entertaining beginnings, writing a descriptive and exciting events and also an extended ending included a feeling, memory and decision. 

Math-We are working on solving Algebra questions in math and also refreshing our memory of math vocabulary words such as PRODUCT, QUOTIENT, SUM, DIFFERENCE etc. Students will have an algebra quiz in the upcoming week! Gym- We played basketball games this week and practiced dribbling, bounce passing and shooting on net.

November 14-18th

Science-This week the grade 4's are learning about things that are translucent, opaque and transparent. In grade 5 we are beginning to do some experiments creating chemical reactions, and using mixtures and solutions.

Language Arts- This week we are learning about visualizing while we read. We are also going to explore character traits and use the character from the story Wonder to build our knowledge of character development.

Math- This week we are continuing our work on solving algebra equations. We are learning to solve equations with missing information and using our knowledge to work backwards.

Gym- We are playing some volleyball games today!

Science-Grade 4's are learning about light and shadow and how the eye works, and grade 5's are learning about mixtures and solutions and how they relate to classroom chemistry.

Gym- We have started our unit in volleyball. We are learning to bump, set, and serve with control and accuracy.

A Peek At Our Week 

Social- The grade 4 class is working on a research project about Alberta's natural resources. 

Language Arts- We learned about the holiday of Diwali today and wrote about how a celebration we take part in is similar to Diwali. We will be continuing our work on figurative language this week and writing Haikus!

Math- We are working on math centers this week. All week we will be practicing our multiplication facts as well as prime and composite numbers.

Gym- We are learning skipping routines this week. With a small group, the students are choreographing a routine that they will perform for the class.

Language Arts- We wrote a personal narrative this week about a topic of our choice. We also finished some art with adjectives, and finished our simile project.

Math- This week was all about Prime and Composite numbers. We are also continuing our practice of fact fluency in multiplication.

Gym- We played some fun new games in the gym this week, and also had a kickball challenge against the other class!

Sept 26-29th

A Peek At Our Week 

Social- The grade 4 class is learning about Alberta and where Alberta is on a map. They are also learning about the features of a map, and diving in to the geographical regions found in our province. The grade 5 class is learning about Canada and is working to learn and memorize the provinces and capitals.

Language Arts- Our personal narratives are almost finished and ready to print and publish. We are also learning about similies this week. We wrote 3 similes about ourselves and we are turning them into a lovely art project.

Math- This week in math we are working on a project to sum up our knowledge of area and perimeter. The students were asked to create a park map and include different shapes with specific areas and perimeters. We are also going to be bringing home our first math test of the year. 

Gym- We are learning kickball in gym and it is a lot of fun. The students are becoming excellent kick ball players!

Science- Our study of weather continues in grade 5. We are learning about instruments that are used to measure weather, as well as how the land affects our weather patterns. The Grade 4's are continuing to learn about waste in our world. PLEASE NOTE- We have a UNIT TEST on Tuesday Sept 20th. Students are bringing home their science duotangs to help them study and learn all the concepts on the quiz.  Monday is our LAST day of weather exploration.

Language Arts- We are working on writing a Personal Narrative this week. We learned about how to brainstorm a topic and use a timeline/outline to format our ideas. We have also just started our interesting beginnings!

Math- In math we are continuing our exploration into the topic of area as well as practicing our multiplication fact fluency. We made multiplication fact flash cards and we are learning and playing some fun math games. Students also started a Mathletics assignment on Friday and can continue to work on it at home.

Gym- We are going to start training for our Terry Fox run this week. Students will be outside running so please ensure they have proper clothing, footwear and a water bottle! **PLEASE NOTE, WE HAVE OUR TERRY FOX RUN ON FRIDAY MORNING! We are also collecting Toonies for Terry again this year.

A Peek At Our Week

Science- Our study of weather continues in grade 5. We are learning more about the water cycle and different types of clouds this week. The Grade 4's are continuing to learn about waste in our world, and the role of decomposers.

Language Arts- We are presenting our TicTac Toe jobs this week and will be bringing our projects home to share. We are also going to be completing a bookmark with comprehension questions to keep with us during our independent reading time. Our read aloud-Wonder continues and we are learning more about Auggie's time at school for the first time.

Math- In math we are continuing our exploration into the topic of area. We are learning to calculate area with L x W and use tiles or grids to count and calculate as well. 

Gym- We are playing Omnikin this week!

August 22-26th

This week we have a lot of exciting things going on. On Monday we met our class pet Ellie. A notice will be coming home on Tuesday with a portion for you to cut off, sign and return. On Wednesday we have an assembly- the first in a couple of years! Students and teachers will gather together to discuss our upcoming school year. On Thursday we have Meet the Teacher from 5:30-7:30pm. Please make sure you are coming in your assigned time slot, or email me if you need to switch. We are learning about area in math, and using the strategy of tiling to help us find the area of rectangles. We are also using the algorithm- lengthXwidth to help us solve the area. In Grade 5 science, we are starting our unit on Weather and the Grade 4's have started a unit on Waste in our World. We are also working on some fun projects using art, writing and technology.

My name is Mrs.Reid  and I am one of the grade 4/5 teachers this year. I am so excited to begin another school year and hear about everyone's summer adventures. Below is some important information to start our year. 

Website Agenda 

Each week our classroom website will be updated with important information. Notices, assignments, classroom news and reminders will all be found on our website.

Occasionally forms will be sent home.  Any form that needs to be returned to the school will be printed on blue paper. If you need to contact me, please write a note, email me at jmreid@cbe.ab.ca or call the school at (403) 777-8240. Please note that emails and calls received after 3:00pm will be returned the following day. 

Reminders

  • Every student must have a pair of indoor running shoes that are appropriate for participation in all gym activities. 
  • It would also be beneficial if students could have their own set of headphones at school for use with computers. 
  • Cell phones are not to be used during school hours.  If you need to contact your child, please do so through the office. Students will be expected to keep cell phones in their backpacks.
  • Children are encouraged to leave valuable items at home to avoid damage or loss of these items. 
  • Children are encouraged to bring their own water bottles and a daily healthy snack to school.  It is recommended that the bottle be returned home and washed at the end of every week to prevent the build up of bacteria and the spreading of germs.  
  • To avoid the loss of personal items, please ensure that all belongings are labeled.
