The Kindergarten program is a specialized developmental program utilizing play, manipulation of concrete materials, learning centres and small and large group work. These elements provide opportunities for children to develop reading skills, numerical skills and problem-solving skills, to express themselves creatively, and to develop a positive view of themselves and a comfortable relationship with others.
The Kindergarten program statement provides learner expectations in seven learning areas:
- Early Literacy
- Early Numeracy
- Citizenship and Identity
- Environment and Community Awareness
- Personal and Social Responsibility
- Physical Skills and Well-being
- Creative Expression
Young children learn in an integrated way and much of their learning will be accomplished through “play” at centers, social interaction with others and during group time. Throughout the day there will be a balance of teacher-directed and child-initiated learning. Students will be given opportunities to interact and converse with others, and will learn to work and play cooperatively. Students will become familiar with reading and writing processes through the use of predictable books, shared reading, and a variety of early reading and writing activities. Manipulatives and games will lay the foundation for Math basics. We will provide an environment that encourages risk-taking and supports success.
