Kindergarten

Dear Parents of our Kindergarten Students,

We would like to welcome you to Royal Oak School and look forward to working with you and your child(ren) in the upcoming school year.  We know that you probably have many questions and below you will find some information that will help with this process.

Kindergarten Registration at Royal Oak School - January 2023 Half Day Program

Kindergarten registration begins on January 16, 2023. The link below has the complete details about the process and other helpful information about Kindergarten in the Calgary Board of Education https://www.cbe.ab.ca/programs/kindergarten/Pages/default.aspx.

Students need to be 5 years old by December 31, 2023 in order to register for Kindergarten in the 2023-2024 school year.  We offer AM and PM half-day classes only - there are no full day Mon/Wed or Tue/Thu Kindergarten classes offered.

The CBE Kindergarten to Grade 9 Registration page has all the details you will need to start the online registration process.

There are two days designated during the first two days of school where new Kindergarten students attend for part of the school day in small groups to begin acquainting themselves with teachers and the Kindergarten environment at the school.  The date and time that your child will attend their staggered entry day will be included in the AM/PM placement letter that will be mailed out at the end of June.

We have a short PowerPoint that showcases the work we do with our students at Royal Oak School. Click here to see the presentation.  Please click on the speaker symbol to hear the audio for each slide

Currently, regular Kindergarten programming occurs during the instructional hours of school Monday – Thursday, 9:07 AM – 11:56 AM or 1:00 PM – 3:49 PM. AM/PM Kindergarten alternate on Fridays 9:07 AM – 1:09 PM. On Fridays, for early dismissal days, AM and PM Kindergarten classes will alternate attendance. Please note that these hours are subject to change as we move into the following school year.  Please refer to the Calendar for specific attendance days.

Kindergarten students are sorted into AM and PM classes. Decisions around who is chosen for AM and PM classes is a complex process and will be as follows:

1)    We try our best to accommodate parent AM/PM preferences, however we typically have a much higher percentage of parents wanting AM placement.  If this occurs, a lottery will be held to determine class placements for AM spots. To be considered for the AM placement lottery if one is required, only registrations received by the end of the day on Tuesday prior to Teacher's Convention in mid-February will be included in the lottery. Placement is not determined on a first come first served basis.  Letters will be mailed to all registered families at the end of June confirming AM or PM placements.

2)    Classes are balanced based on student needs, boy/girl balance, ELL needs and availability of Educational Assistants (EA) to support coded students.

3)    Unfortunately, placement cannot be prioritized based on childcare needs or that of before and after care organizations.

A Royal Oak School calendar will be sent home with parents on the first day of school, and is also posted on the school website. This schedule will indicate which Fridays the AM and PM classes will attend.

We look forward to having you at our wonderful school!
