Events (Calendar Items)

Events show up on your website as calendar items on the home page, the online calendar page, and the print calendar view. This section explains how to create and manage your school's events.

Here are a few things to be aware of as you work with events on your site:

What Should I Know Before I Create an Event?

Edit Your Event, Not Your Calendar Page!

Never, ever use the gear icon to edit your home page or calendar page (or your news centre). Manage events on your home page and calendar page as outlined in this section of the guide, and the pages will take care of themselves.

Don't Forget to Share To

Like Posts (news), Events only show up on your site if you use the "Share To” function. Events that aren't shared will be trapped forever in the cloud, eternally unable to fulfill their calendar destiny. Make sure you look for the paper airplane of sharing any time you create an event. If it's grey, that item hasn't been shared yet; if it's orange, it has.

Take a Little Time

Unlike content page changes, which show up as soon as you're done editing, events that you create may take anywhere from a few seconds to a couple of minutes to be processed and displayed on your home page and calendar. Wait a bit and refresh your page before you give up hope.

Watch Out For System-Wide Events

System-Wide Event

When you see this globe icon in an event description, it means it is system-wide, and you cannot edit or modify this event. System-wide events (e.g. Spring Break dates) have been created in a central events list. These events are identified as "system-wide" in their description, as well as indicating which calendar (traditional or modified) they apply to. Be aware of these events as you create your school-specific entries so that you don’t duplicate them. To make sure we don't have one school modifying or deleting an event that's also displayed on every other school's site, you aren't able to edit or delete system events, and won't see the gear icon when you open them up.

To remove a system-wide event from your calendar, email a request to schoolwebsupport@cbe.ab.ca.
