News | How it Works

Your Front Page

There are 3 zones for news on your front page (this can vary depending on your sites layout).

When you create a post also known as a news article or story, and share it to your website it automatically appears in first spot in Zone 1: Spotlight Banner (see screenshot below).

Each time you add a story it will push the older story down one spot, for example Welcome to the 2018-19 School Year is number two. When this zone reaches its maximum 5 posts the oldest story in this zone will now be bumped down into Zone 2: Other Stories.

This same process continues as you create posts through Zone 2: Other Stories, when this reaches its maximum of 4 posts, the oldest article will then be pushed into Zone 3: More News.

  • Zone 1 | Spotlight Banner - max. 5
  • Zone 2 | Other Stories - max. 4
  • Zone 3 | More News - max. 8

Changing Post Order & Removing Old / Outdated Stories

Both of these tasks are very simple to do, it does however requires Approver Permissions

To change what zone a news story appears in or to remove an article from your front page follow the instructions for the SiteGovern Scheduler, see headings: Change the Order of Your Stories and Remove Story sections.

News Layouts

If schools are not creating many news stories, you may want to consider asking School Web Support to change your front page layout.

Please note that when going to a simplified version of the news on your website will also changes the Quicklinks & Useful Links zones your front page.

Full Layout

This includes:

  • 5 Spotlight Banner Stories
  • 4 Other News Stories
  • 8 More News

This layout also includes 6 Quicklinks and up to 12 Useful Links lower down on your front page.

Basic Layout

  • 5 Spotlight Banner Stories
  • 3 Other News Stories

QuickLinks Only: Max 6 - No Useful Links

Minimal Layout

This is only recommend for schools with special settings. Remember if information goes out through SchoolMessenger it should be on your website too, and it doesn't take long to get to 5 stories. It also removes the link to the news centre for stories that could no longer be displayed on the front page, and removes the RSS feed button.

This includes:

  • 5 Spotlight Banner Stories

QuickLinks Only: Max 6 - No Useful Links

Pi Day is a good time to talk about numeracy – it's not the same as mathematics. We use numeracy skills to compare costs at the grocery store, judge distances, interpret a chart/map, or adapt a recipe.
