Principal Update November 6

Students from the Principal's Council presented our first Mental Health Virtual Presentation on Thursday this week.  Two members of the  council prepared an amazing presentation for the whole school.  The presentation supported students to consider healthy relationship skills including how to manage conflicts and how to be a good friend. The council is excited to continue their leadership work in the upcoming months with students, teachers, and parents!

Here are the updates and reminders for this week:

Parent-Teacher Conferences

The November 2020 Parent Student Teacher Conferences are for In Class Students only.

  • Nov.18 (3-7pm)
  • Nov.19 (3-7pm)
  • Nov.20 (9am-1pm)

Please note, Nov. 18 & 19 will be early dismissal days. Classes end at 12:18 pm, and buses depart at 12:26 pm.

  • The conferences will be available for bookings starting on Nov. 9 at 7:00 am and ending on Nov. 20 at 1:00 pm.  Please visit the CBE my Conferences (instructions below).

  • HUB on-line students will have interviews in December. Information will be sent closer to that date.
  • Interviews will be booked through MyCBE PowerSchool Parent Account.  The appointments will be conducted online for a maximum of 10 minutes each.

Attached is a one-page Parent Cheat Sheet to help you with this process.

A user guide is also available on the MyCBE/PowerSchool Technical Support for Students & Parents page to assist families:

  • Book a school conference
  • Join the online conference in Microsoft Teams on a computer, tablet or smartphone that has a mic and a video camera.
  • Connect by phone if you don't have access to a computer, tablet, or smartphone

You can find step-by-step instructions for School Conferences in the Parent User Guide:

School Fees:

  • Parents will see that there is a $40.00 fee in their PowerSchool Parent Account that has been applied at the system level to cover off costs for individual and shared instructional materials.  At Simon Fraser, we purchased items for our students this year from this fee.  Ordering had to be completed in a timely manner and our current protocols were not in place.  In our current environment, items cannot be shared.  We realize many families were sent a supply list to cover off some of these items that could not be shared.  We do have materials that are for individual use like binders and paper, however, some teachers suggested that families may choose to buy items that exceed the quality of our purchases. e.g. binders with zippers.  We apologize if there has been confusion regarding this fee.
  • The student supplies fee can be waived in accordance with central fee waiver processes, including the standard low-income waiver and the “new” centrally administered Extraordinary Circumstances waiver.

Coyote Update:

  • The wily coyote has disappeared.  We hope he is back at Nose Hill!

Remembrance Day:

  • We are holding a virtual assembly this Tuesday starting at 10:20 to honor and commemorate those in the armed forces, past and present. Canadians at home and abroad have made countless sacrifices during times of war and conflict, and continue to serve during times of peace. On this Remembrance Day Simon Fraser students will honour these men and women by making wreaths in their cohorts and taking time to appreciate their service, their sacrifice, and, most importantly, their contributions toward peace. Our leadership classes have worked hard to put a beautiful tribute together.  This year marks 75 years ago that Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated. If you would like to join the virtual assembly please Click here to join the meeting

We hope our families have an amazing weekend!  I so enjoy each and every day with your children and look forward to another full week of learning next week!

Principal Update October 30

Happy Friday Simon Fraser Families,

Thursday was a fun day at Simon Fraser School.   Batman, dinosaurs, skeletons, and even Waldo showed up to get us into some Halloween spirit.  In a year with so many changes, this was a fun day to bring back a little bit of normal.  Please review the week ahead as there are some important updates:

 Locker Access:

  • We will be allowed to access student lockers in the upcoming weeks.  There are some processes and protocols that will need to be in place, so we will spend the next week putting a plan in place.  Students will not store their instructional materials in their locker and there will be limited trips throughout the day.  Stay tuned and we will provide a comprehensive update next week.

Winter Months and Outdoor Time:

  • We will be meeting over the next two weeks to make some decisions regarding our physical education planning for when the weather turns cold.  We realize that we will have to ramp up our safety protocols and amend indoor activity if students need to be wearing masks.  We are actively planning next steps.  Physical education programming will continue to include outdoor learning so ensuring your child has warm winter clothing will be important.  We value our daily physical education programming as we know the positive impacts to student overall well-being!

Teacher Weekly Update:

  • Please read through the teacher weekly updates.  Teachers are including important information on next steps in learning and current tasks that your child needs to complete.  Our teachers are committed to providing your child with feedback to improve their learning.  If tasks are not completed in a timely manner, and your child is not receiving this feedback, growth in learning can be impeded.   Please reach out to your child's teacher if you have questions about this.  The staff list is fully updated on the Simon Fraser School website.

Updated Protocols:

OurSCHOOL Survey:

  • We have completed collecting the OurSCHOOL survey and are now analyzing the results.  The data has made visible an important area of focus for our school in the coming months regarding the levels of anxiety our female students are telling us they are feeling.  These levels far exceed that of our male students. In the coming months, we will be meeting with our students to fully understand what this data is telling us.  However, we wanted to provide a resource out to all our families. An online learning opportunity offered by GirlPower Hour on November 5, 2020 from 12:00-1:00 PM.  The session is called “Kids & COVID; Anxiety Amped - How to Help."  If this is of interest please visit to learn more and register.  Consider attending our next parent council meeting to learn more about the data collected from over 85% of Simon Fraser students.

It looks like beautiful weekend weather and some golf courses are putting the pins back out! We hope all our families enjoy some amazing outdoor time.  We are excited to have your children back for a full week of learning.

Principal Update October 23

The snow had come early; however, this has not deterred the children from heading outside and enjoying themselves.  Thank you to all of our families for ensuring your children are dressed for the change in weather.  Getting outside for at least 20 minutes at lunch is keeping everyone feeling regulated and ready to learn in the afternoon.  Here are the updates for this week:

Wily Coyote:

  • The coyote continues to make Simon Fraser, and the connecting school fields, their home.  We are keeping a close eye on its activity.  All the surrounding schools and community folks have called into the City of Calgary and Calgary Police, but the coyote continues to thwart any attempts to relocate him.  Please be sure to remind your child to watch for this wily fellow as he has been acting a bit aggressive towards staff at other schools in the early morning.  We want to keep everyone safe.

Halloween Dress-Up:

  • Students can wear their costumes to school on Thursday, October 29. Students will need to continue to wear their masks with their costumes. Please be sure your child's costume is appropriate and would be in alignment with the school dress code.  Please note, that students that come to school with fake weapons or alluring costumes will be asked to change.

Principal's Council:

  • Our grade nine students on the principal's council have now met twice and have started planning their next steps in leading change at Simon Fraser.  The students felt that during this time students need strategies to manage their mental well-being! Starting in November, we will have a  five minute weekly virtual assembly where our council will be educating our student body on some specific ways for students to take care of their mental health.

Mr.  Edmonds:

  • For personal reasons, Mr. Edmonds will be taking a leave starting this Monday.  Ms. Carol Hall will be the acting assistant principal in his absence.  Ms. Hall is a retired principal with the CBE and has a wealth of experience and knowledge that will support our school community during Mr. Edmonds absence.  We will all miss Mr. Edmonds while he is away.  Please feel free to reach out to myself or Ms. Hall during Mr. Edmonds' absence.  Her email is

Teacher Weekly Update:

  • Every Friday teachers send their weekly update.  Please note that you may not receive an update this Friday from some teachers due to the news today regarding the positive COVID case in our school.  The update will be sent on Monday to give our staff some time to take care of their own well-being!

We wish all our families a wonderful weekend.  We look forward to welcoming your children back on Monday.  A reminder that next week is a short week with Friday a time for our staff to professionally learn together.

Principal Update October 16, 2020

We have had another great week at Simon Fraser School.  The students continue to follow the safety protocols and there is incredible learning happening both online and in our face-to-face learning.  We hope parents will consider joining us in our second parent council meeting this coming Monday at 7:00 PM.  Here are the updates and reminders for this week:

Healthy Hunger

  • If your child(ren) is absent on the day of special lunch, please call in and inform the office before noon on Wednesdays on how to handle the order in advance.  Parents can request that the special lunch order be redistributed to a sibling or come picking the lunch up themselves at lunch time. If we do not hear from you, then the lunch will be donated to another child who may not have a lunch.  We will no longer be calling families to notify them.
  • If you have not ordered your fun lunch yet, please see the attachment below for additional information and to order.

Hub Student Pictures and Pictures Retake Day

  • If you are a Hub parent and you have not signed up to schedule a time for picture day on October 22, please RSVP to Ms. O'Shaughnessy at We are booking times for families to minimize contact with others and keep everyone safe.  This date will also be an opportunity for retakes for all other students.

  • Our next parent council meeting will take place this Monday October 19, 2020 at 7:00 PM.  Please click on the link here to attend virtually.  All meetings will take place on Microsoft Teams going forward.

  • Just a reminder of the date for the grade 7 vaccinations is October 29.

Cold Weather on the Horizon

  • Please remind your child(ren) to continue to dress warm in the weeks ahead.  We want all students to spend some time outdoors.  We will have classrooms open for 20 minutes into the lunch break; however, after that students will need to head out into the outdoors.

OurSCHOOL Survey

  • Please find attached a letter detailing the OurSCHOOL survey we will be completing with grades 6-9 next week.  The survey is set up to measure certain areas of school climate that are affecting our students' success and well-being.   The results of the survey will support us to take action to reduce vulnerability and improve learning, engagement and well-being outcomes.  To be able to do this, requires us having the right information at the right time to make informed decisions. The results are anonymous and will be used in our school development planning as well as cycles of continuous improvement throughout the year.
OurSCHOOL survey info.docx

  • A big thank you to all parents for packing extra masks and reminding their child to have an additional mask.  We did not have to provide many masks to students this week!

I hope everyone stays warm and has some down time this weekend.  We look forward to welcoming all of your children back on Monday!

Iris Learner Profiles and Individual Program Plans (IPPs):

Individual Program Plans are an integral part of planning for and supporting student learning. Teachers are meeting with students and contacting families to continue building out the conditions for success, current learning, priority learning cycles in Iris.  This year all students at Simon Fraser will be developing their student learning plan in Iris, starting with our students who have an IPP.   The learning plan can be accessed through Iris and the student’s school ID number and password at

Important reasons for the student learning plan are to:

  • Support students to develop an understanding about themselves as learners.
  • Create opportunities for students to demonstrate their understanding in a learning context
  • Supports students to determine their own next steps in learning.
  • Provide opportunities for students to communicate with teachers about what they know and can do, the conditions under which they learn best, and what they need to learn next.
  • Ensure teachers can access information about student needs, interests and abilities to inform the instructional design process.
  • Ensure that what is known in one context, or by one teacher, is not lost in another.

IPP’s will be sent to families before October 30, 2020 and will need to be signed and returned.  Students that are in the Hub will receive IPP’s by November 16th.

Please be sure to call in your child’s absences so we can maintain an accurate record of attendance.  Also, if you are picking your child up early, please call the office and let us know. This will also save a phone call home.  Thanks so much!

Thanks to our families and students for another incredible week! Enjoy the weekend.

Orange Shirt Day

  • Wednesday September 30th is Orange Shirt Day.  The event commemorates the residential school experience, and honours the healing journey of the survivors and their families, and to commit to the ongoing process of reconciliation. The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year. Please remind your child to wear their orange shirt if they have one.  We will also have orange ribbons available for any child who wants to participate. There will be many learning experiences embedded into our humanities classes in the coming days to support students to learn more about residential schools and reconciliation.

Virtual Meet the Teacher:

  • Tuesday, October 6 is vitual meet the teacher! Parents can drop in online and hear from our teachers and from administration.  Myself and Mr. Edmonds will hold a virtual townhall from 7:00-7:30 to answer your questions. Principal Update Sept 11, 2020

Happy Friday Simon Fraser Families,

We had another successful week of learning!  Students are really getting into the groove of indoor and outdoor learning and it is wonderful to hear so much laughter and excitement both in the classroom and outside during lunch.  We know our families who have chosen online learning are anxiously awaiting next steps.  The update today will provide some clarity.

Here are this week's updates:

Hub Updates:

  • Families can expect to hear from their child's Hub homeroom teacher by end of day Wednesday September 16.  We are still waiting on additional details so that we can connect and officially start online learning. This was an incredibly complex process for our system and we are so thankful for everyone's patience and caring for our staff and students throughout. Teachers just received their teaching assignments yesterday and class lists will be ready early next week.   More specific details to come!
  • Once you receive the first communication from teachers regarding Hub learning, you will see that some of your child's teachers may not be from Simon Fraser.  We are putting processes and structures in place to ensure we stay connected with all teachers supporting our learners at Simon Fraser.
  • We will continue to create opportunities for all families and their children who have chosen online learning with school based opportunities if and when possible.  Picture day was missed by our online learners and we know how important this day is for all students!  Therefore, we have set retake day aside so that our students learning on the Hub can book a time to come into the school and have their picture taken on October 22, 2020.  We know our families might be concerned about entering the building so just be sure to book a time.  We will send a link out closer to the date for sign-up.

Transportation Update:

  • Transportation is working diligently to support all of our families to access bussing.  Please know that the reason for the delay is to ensure that each child has a seat on the bus and can travel safely.  If you have registered for bussing and have chosen to register your child for Hub online learning, please be sure to cancel bussing as soon as possible.  Hub students who remain registered for the bus could incur charges without cancelling. This will allow families waiting for bussing to be approved sooner.

  • We are going to be adding a teacher to our grade 6 and 7 team.  The class size in both of these grades increased due to low numbers in online learning.  Now that we have staffed the online positions, we are able to add a full-time teacher for another homeroom to these grades.  Ms. Salt will be joining us, teaching Humanities and one science class to both grades. Her official start date is September 28 and she is an exceptional teacher.  We will be working together to move students in a very thoughtful way and we also recognize that moving students in and out of cohorts may be concerning for some families.  The class sizes will be significantly smaller which will allow for more distancing and safety in the classroom.

Meet the Teacher:

  • As a school community, we have chosen Tuesday, October 6 as our virtual meet the teacher evening.  We will start the evening at 6:30 with a virtual town hall. The first 30 minutes parents will have the opportunity to hear from myself and Mr. Edmonds. Families will be sent a link that allows them to ask their burning questions and this will help us create a presentation to respond to your queries! At 7:00, Parents will virtually connect with their grade team teachers on google meet and learn more about what is happening in learning for their children!  Families will receive more information and links to access this opportunity closer to the date.

Demographic Forms:

  • This year more than ever, it is so important for families to carefully check over your demographics form and return it to the school no later than September 23, 2020.  Families can scan and email, mail or drop off the forms.

Parent Council:

  • Our first meeting is on September 21 at 7:00 pm.  We are currently working to secure a space for the meeting due to the limited access of external folks to the school.  We will be sending out a RSVP link so that we know how many folks are attending and how much space we will need.  This meeting will also include the AGM.  We have a few open leadership opportunities including:
    • Key Communicator
    • Vice President
    • Volunteer Coordinator

Mask Wearing:

  • Spend a few minutes reminding your child to stay safe and follow the mask protocols we have put in place when outside in the community or together on the school ground.  We know that this is the hardest part of being back together and the children are doing an amazing job of following through in the school it is just outside this gets tricky.  Just a few areas for improvement on this one!

Morning Drop-Off:

  • Please drop your child off by parking on the street.  The staff parking lot is not a safe location for drop off!  Thank you so much for your support on this.

Terry Fox Run:

  • Please see the attached letter outlining this year's Terry Fox Run!  Thanks to our amazing phys. ed team for supporting Terry's legacy.  Terry Fox Parent Letter

Sorry for the extra-long update! We hope you have a wonderful weekend with your families and enjoy the amazing weather!  We continue to be grateful for each day we have working with your children in support of their learning, and we look forward to another week next week!
