Principal's Message

Sept 12

The school community is settling down to the new routines of the school year and students are feeling more comfortable finding their way in the new timetable, remembering their locker combinations and where their classes are.  We want to sincerely thank our wonderful students and families along with our awesome staff for their patience with the many changes that occur along with the adjustmentsrequired for a successful start of a new school year.VaccinationsAHS is offering COVID-19 vaccinations to our students on September 18 at our school.  We need a minimum of 18 participants who have their parents / guardians written consent for AHS to proceed with this.  At this time, we do not have enough consents returned.  If you would like to have your student vaccinated please return the attached AHS Consent Form for COVID-19 In-School Immunization.pdf  by Wed, Sept 15 or the COVID-19 vaccination program willbe cancelled at SJAM.Parking concernsAt this time of the year, we have a great deal of students getting dropped off on the side of our school on 64th Ave.  If you are going to be driving your child to SJAM we suggest you use the Murray Copot Arena just East of SJAM located at 6727Centre St NW, Calgary.  This will reduce the congestion along our school and allow your child a healthy walk across the backfield and some fresh air prior to starting their day.  Wewant to remind parents the staff parking lot is only to be used if you are parking in the visitor spots to come into the school, handicapped spots are reserved for those with the appropriate documentation. The staff parking lot should not be used as a drop off zone as there are safety concerns for staff and students. Diefenbaker’s student parking lot will be unavailable Monday, September 13, as the school is being used for the Federal Election Advance Poll Stations.  Please use another alternative unless you are there to vote. The Parking Authority will be patrolling along 64 AVE in the upcoming week to support traffic moving safely and smoothly in our area.BikesStudents are asked to please lock up your bikes if you are riding one to school.  We had someone from the surrounding community take one of the bikes from school property this week, which was not locked up.Attendance and LatesStudents have been reminded that the school day starts at 8:20 and that the doors open for students 10 minutes before the start of theday.  Students are expected to be in their classes by 8:20.  If your student is later than 8:30 they will need to stop in the front office to sign-in.  We appreciate the phone calls that have come in when your student will be absent or late with the reason. We also appreciate the calls letting the office know about appointment times during the day so that students can be signed out for when you pick the students up. Covid -19 updatesParents and guardians received a message on Friday that starting on Monday, Sept. 13, schools will begin providing notifications whenfamilies self-report an AHS-confirmed case of COVID-19 to their school. It is important that your child stay home when sick, but it is also important for them to attend school if they are feeling well. As close contacts are no longer required to isolate, ifyou choose to keep your child at home, it will be marked as an unexcused absence.  If there is a 10 per cent or greater student absentee rate that includes similar symptoms, AHS may declare an outbreak. Families will be informed if an outbreak is declared attheir school and these notices will be posted to the school website.  To ensure you receive all the important updates and information from your school, please ensure your school(s) have your correct email address on file.
We hope you are having a relaxing and safe weekend,Darren, Andrea & Cat
