Final Message of the 2021-22 School Year

As I write our final message of the 2021-22 school year, I would like to say a huge thank you to all of the parents and guardians of our students who have remained a strong support for their learning during a busy year.  It has come with changes in administration, changes in COVID protocols, and recently a change in curriculum.  As we head into next year, we will be stepping into a new timetable and bell schedule in order to truly focus on embracing all aspects of Arts-Centred Learning.  This information will be added to our website in August and included in the opening package.

Monday and Tuesday are the final school days for students, with regular bus times and dismissal at 3:50.  Students will be participating in a variety of activities with their grade teams to celebrate the end of the school year.  Be sure to send them with flexible clothing and snacks for many outdoor options!  Finally appeals day will occur on Wednesday, June 29 between 9-1pm, by appointment. Please contact the school 403-777-7610 if you would like to speak with your child’s teacher or administration regarding this report card.  The office will reopen on August 29 and classes will resume on Thursday, September 1st, 2022.

Have a fantastic summer!

Fall Update

We are two months into our 21-22 school year and we are so grateful to still be together. There have been many rich learning opportunities/experiences!

SJF students have been taking advantage of the weather and taken up opportunities for learning off the land in different core classes. Both in Science and Humanities students have been journaling and making observations. Phys. Ed has had the opportunity to use the outdoor space as a third classroom throughout the fall, and on Oct. 1st we had a beautiful day to recognize/run/walk for Terry Fox. It was great to see students create banners, cheers, and do team building activities to celebrate Terry Fox's legacy and learn about different ways to learn from his strengths.

Building up to Sept 30th National day for Truth and Reconciliation students had different opportunities to read books, listen to elders, gather research, reflect, and take part in arts-centred learning activities. There was evidence in our ACL classes, CSSI/TASC, and LEAD that we found out more and came to a greater understanding through these shared experiences. Throughout the school there was beautiful art work as part of this special day. We look forward to the ongoing process of building indigenous foundational knowledge as a school community.

Our school volleyball teams and volleyball club have been really successful. Students on teams and as part of the club have the opportunity to develop their volleyball skills and come together with coaches to play against other schools. Please ask your students and take a look at the week at a glance to see upcoming club/team opportunities for students in grade 5-9.

Both SJF school council and the Music parent's association were able to gather virtually in Sept and Oct. It was great to see so many faces! Thank you to our parent community for your ongoing commitment to our students!

As we head towards cooler temperatures please be sure your child has appropriate clothing so that they are prepared in coming on and off the bus, and for second half of lunch outdoors. We will be opening the school at 8:55 for students who arrive in the morning, and the first half of lunch we will have a space for each grade to each their lunch indoors. Students will be expected to head outside the second half of lunch unless we have inclement weather (which will be announced).

Thank you for your ongoing support. I'm proud to be a part of such a creative community!

2021-22 Start Up

We have had such a great start up together as a school community. I am very excited to be a part of Sir John Franklin School, with energetic staff, an inclusive arts-centred learning community, and thriving system classrooms. Our first couple of weeks together we have embedded more homeroom time to get to know each other better through the arts and through team building activities. I have seen many students taking part in different team challenges, and engaging in the creative process through different mediums. There is a beautiful energy in our school, and I look forward to experiencing that throughout the year as we have shared experiences. There will be many opportunities to take part in extracurricular clubs/teams as the year progresses, this is an important part of middle school-take advantage of these opportunities as they will enhance student learning.

Thank you to students and staff for continuing to mask, sanitize, and use alternate entrances as we continue to follow COVID-19 protocols and guidelines. Thank you to our facility staff for continuing to go the extra mile in keeping our school safe and clean.

It has been a pleasure connecting with parents through school council, email, and in front of the school. I look forward to connecting in different ways throughout the year. Thanks to everyone for your warm welcome, flexibility and kindness.
