Security

We take safety and security seriously. It is important that we maintain a safe and caring community so that learning can take place.

School Entrance and Exit

The Calgary Board of Education has important security policies in place that schools must follow. For the safety of the students, all doors will be locked during school hours. All visitors and volunteers to the school during school hours must ring the bell, state their name and reason for visit, and then report to the main office to sign in and receive an ID tag.

Visitors & Volunteers

Our school is a closed campus. All visitors and volunteers must report directly to the main office to sign-in and request permission from the school administration to be in the school. This process helps us know where you are in case of an emergency and allows staff and students to know you have signed-in with the office staff by wearing your volunteer/visitor badge.

To ensure school security, all exterior doors will be locked after school commences each day. Anyone who is not a student or school staff member is required to sign in.

Students Leaving School Grounds

The school is responsible for the safety of the students during the school day. Therefore, all Grade 6 students are to remain on the school grounds during the school day with the exception of students who have permission to go home for lunch or when accompanying parents to appointments. Students in Grades 7 – 9 may leave the school grounds during the lunch break.

Supervision

Supervision of students begins at 8:10 AM. For your child’s safety and protection, please do not bring or send your child prior to this time. Students should wait in the rotunda and be supervised until the bell rings.

Contacting Students During School Hours

When picking up your child for an appointment, parents are expected to check in at the office to sign their child out. Under no circumstances are you to proceed directly to the classroom. The office will assist you in locating your child. Other than in the case of an emergency or appointment, we will only be able to call the child to the office during break times.

Dismissal & Pick-up

Please talk to your child about safety and family expectations for dismissal time, as the school does not provide supervision after 3:16 pm. All students are required to exit the building after school unless participating in a school-sponsored activity, sport, or club. We will not allow students to leave during school hours unless we have direct permission from parents / guardians. If you are sending a friend or relative to the school to pick up your child, please inform the school prior to pick-up, either in writing or by telephone. Parents are asked to come to the office to sign out students who are being picked up.

Student Searches

In the event that school safety and security is a concern administration has the right to complete searches of student lockers, student property or personal belongings at any time.

Lockdowns

All CBE schools are required to practice lockdowns in the same way that we practice fire drills. The procedures for lockdowns are developed with the Calgary Police Service and are part of each school’s Emergency Response Plan. If you have questions about lockdown drills or lockdown procedures, please contact your principal.

Evacuation Procedures

In the event that the school needs to be evacuated for any reason, all staff have been trained according to CBE standards. All schools have a primary and a secondary evacuation site. In the event of an evacuation, you will receive an email, phone or SMS notification from the school.
