ALL Grade 8 and Grade 9 students to online classes from Monday, May 31 to Thursday, June 10
May 30, 2021
On Friday and Saturday we were notified of two positive cases of COVID-19 that have been diagnosed in individuals at Sir Wilfrid Laurier School. Many associated staff members have been identified as a close contact of these two cases and will be required to isolate at home for up to 14 days.
Due to operational capacity concerns and to ensure consistent instruction in all courses, the decision has been made to move ALL Grade 8 and Grade 9 students to online classes from Monday, May 31 to Thursday, June 10.
Moving these classes online will help to ensure we are able to provide focused instructional support for all students.
In-person classes are scheduled to resume for all Grade 8 and Grade 9 students on Friday, June 11.
Students in grades 6 and 7 (unless previously directed to isolate) should continue to make their way to school to attend in-person classes. Our school will remain open to in-person learning for these students, and we continue to work closely with AHS to ensure necessary measures continue to be in place to protect all staff and students.
Continuity of Learning for Students Learning Online from Home
All grade 8 and 9 students learning online from home will be supported in maintaining course work during the designated period through Google Classroom and other online communications. Students will not join Hub online learning.
All students are expected to continue to engage in learning their academic subject matter during this time. In supporting students, we will follow our regular timetable virtually, starting with period 1 at 8:50 am.
Teachers will be connecting with each of their classes to provide online instructional support during this time. Some teachers may record lessons or offer additional tutorial times. No exams or tests will be completed online during this time and any assessments will be conducted when students return to school after June 11, 2021.
Students - if you are feeling anxious, have academic concerns about your learning, or need additional supports please know that your teachers, Ms. Jernigan (Assistant Principal) and myself can be reached to support you. Please reach out.
For students who need access to technology, please connect with Ms. Jernigan directly at firstname.lastname@example.org . We do have access to some technology devices that can be loaned out for the online learning period.
The school has completed the process of contacting each family affected by the positive case yesterday and today, and AHS will be following up only with those individuals.
If your child has any of the symptoms of illness listed on the Alberta Health daily checklist, please complete the online Alberta Health Services COVID-19 self-assessment or call Health Link at 811.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we take these additional measures to continue to support student learning. Thank you for your ongoing support of our Sir Wilfrid Laurier Learning Community.
Take good care,
May 28, 2021
On May 28, 2021, the school used a PreAlert message to notify our community of a positive case of COVID-19 that had been reported by a family or staff member. At that time, the school did not have official confirmation from Alberta Health Services (AHS). The purpose of this message is to inform you that AHS has now confirmed this case. This letter is not a notification of a new case.
The school had already contacted each family or staff member affected by the positive case and now, AHS will follow up. If you were not identified as a close contact, then your child(ren) were not affected by the positive case. The quarantine dates provided to close contacts in the pre-alert have been confirmed by AHS.
We remind parents/guardians of students to monitor for any signs or symptoms of COVID-19. Please remember to complete the Alberta daily checklist each day prior to attending school. Daily checklist
If you/your child has any of the symptoms of illness listed on the Alberta Health daily checklist, please fill out the online Alberta Health Services COVID-19 self-assessment or call Health Link at 811 and stay home/keep your child at home.
We will continue to provide additional information to parents / guardians as it is available.
