English Language Arts (ELA) and Humanities are more than reading and writing. ELA involves:
- Communicating effectively in various places for many different audiences and reasons
- Selecting appropriate forms, structures and technology for a variety of contexts
- Understanding, appreciating and creating a broad range of texts (including multi-media, visual, oral, and print)
Literacy
The Calgary Board of Education’s vision of literacy is each CBE student will develop the necessary literacy skills to thrive in life, work and continued learning. Alongside the CBE literacy outcome of students participating in intentional, joyful literacy learning our school focuses on engaging students in understanding literacy across all subject disciplines using a multitude of balanced literacy strategies. Through these strategies we help students progress and achieve in their learning programs. Above all else, we strive to instill a joy of reading for all of our students where they instinctually want to pick up a book, any good book and immerse themselves between the lines.
