Volunteer Opportunities at Our School
Grade 6 Parent Message
We are looking to create a committee for Grade 6 grad. Paola Rodriguez has graciously agreed to support the committee however we are looking for a Grade 6 parent to lead it.
You are all invited to participate in our initial planning meeting which will be held via Zoom Dec 8, 2020 at 7pm. We are looking for possible fundraising ideas, to create a plan and discuss/ fill various roles. We want to make this year a memorable fun experience given all the change and restrictions our children have had this past year and given our current circumstances we will need to be creative and flexible. We are excited to hear your ideas, suggestions and for some creative planning. If you are unable to attend but have some ideas you would like to share please email Paola directly.
We look forward to seeing you via zoom and working towards a fun and successful graduation celebration.
Casino Volunteers
We are still putting out a call for volunteers for a few positions that need to be filled for the Casino. This is a critical fundraiser for our school. If you are interested, or know of someone who can volunteer at this please contact Maggie at sunaltacasino@gmail.com. (or call the school)
Room Parent - sunaltavolunteercoordinator@gmail.com
Room Parents serve as a critical role. You are the liaison between a classroom teacher and the other classroom parents. Your role is to communicate with and ask assistance of the parents. The responsibilities of a Room Parent vary from teacher to teacher, however, as a facilitator you can expect to be asked to: work with the teacher to communicate the classroom Calendar of Events with parents and recruit parent volunteers to support those events; coordinate classroom readers and classroom volunteer schedules; plan class parties and crafts or other activities; organize the teacher’s cards and gifts at Christmas and year-end; communicate and assist with school-wide events. Sometimes, this role is shared between two parents. As a Room Parent, you will be invited to attend an orientation meeting at the beginning of the school year.
Classroom Volunteer
You will be contacted directly by the room parent to determine your availability. Various task as assigned by the teacher.
Class or School Events / Field Trip

Babysitters - sunaltavicechair@gmail.com
We are looking for students who would be interested in babysitting for Parent Teacher Interviews and/or School Council Meetings. If you have a child in grade 5 or 6 with babysitting training OR know of a student who would like to receive some babysitting experience, then this would be a great opportunity! At Council Meetings, the students would be asked to volunteer for 1.5 to 2 hours. Parent Teacher Interviews require students to share (in rotation) a period of 2 to 3 hours (i.e. students might stay only 1 hour, to be replaced by another student for an hour, and then another). Interested students and parents should contact Renee Maygard at the email above.
Volunteer Fill-In - sunaltavolunteercoordinator@gmail.com
Looking to establish a list of volunteers who would be open to filling in (often *last minute*) where classes are short volunteers for parent-supported activities such as field trips.
Cross-Grade Volunteer - sunaltavolunteercoordinator@gmail.com
These would be cross-grade volunteer opportunities where a volunteer would be available to support any teacher, any grade, not just their own child(ren)’s.
Costumes and Special Events Coordinator - sunaltaconcertprep@gmail.com
You are the liaison between the Music teacher and the parents. Your role is to communicate with and ask assistance of parents. As a facilitator, you can expect to be asked to: work with the teacher to communicate Music Event needs, recruit parent volunteers to support the Winter and Spring concerts, recruit volunteers to help with cutting patterns, pinning, sewing costumes, prop set-up/ take down.
Special Skills Volunteer - sunaltavolunteercoordinator@gmail.com
If a parent has a special area of expertise or interest that they would like to share with students, a classroom environment can really benefit from this type of exposure and interaction. These volunteer positions may extend beyond your child’s classroom, if you’re willing to visit children in another class or grade. Areas of expertise might include, but are not limited to: Geology; Plastic Arts; Applied Science; Geography (if you’re from a different country); Performance Arts; Ukrainian eggs (assist the students in creating Pysanka [Ukranian eggs]). If you have an idea, please reach out and let us know!
Think-a-Thon - sunaltathinkathon@gmail.com
The Think-a-Thon is a fundraiser at Sunalta School that takes place towards Spring Break, in which students collect pledges (either a set donation or an amount per correct answer) before they write an exam. The money raised by the Think-a-thon is used to supplement the Sunalta School Council budget, which provides for such things as learning and classroom aids, library books, Phys. Ed. equipment, music equipment, tennis lessons and maintenance to the school computers. Parent volunteers are required to help mark the exams and no special skills are required (an answer sheet is provided.). Markers are needed on the day of the exams, anywhere from 1-2 hours.
Staff Appreciation Dinner - sunaltasocialcoordinator@gmail.com
Help with setting up and serving a dinner for teachers (one evening at the end of the school year).
Teacher Support Volunteer - sunaltavolunteercoordinator@gmail.com
A parent willing to lend regular support in reading or basic math with an individual or a group of students. Volunteers are asked to commit a number of sessions on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis. Once availabilities are defined, these are communicated to teachers. This volunteer position can extend beyond your child’s classroom, if you are willing. Parents are encouraged to offer support across the grades. Each teacher who calls upon a Teacher Support Volunteer will also give special instructions.
Casino - sunaltacasino@gmail.com
The Casino is a major fundraising event for Sunalta School. The funds from the casino go directly to purchasing literature, music, sports and technology used by all of the students at Sunalta School. The volunteer positions include: General Manager, Banker, Cashier, Chip Runner, Count Room Supervisor and Count Room Staff.
The casino requires 36 volunteers in total. It may prove to be difficult to fill in the positions as it could be happening very early in the next school year. We will be looking to fill in as many volunteer positions as possible before the school year commences.
Anyone can volunteer as long as they are 18 years or older! It can be an uncle, aunt, older sibling, parent, grandparent or any other community member. There are a variety of positions available for which NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY. Volunteers in key positions (GM, Banker, Cashier, Count Room Supervisor) will be required to complete a volunteer form which can be obtained electronically or by contacting sunaltacasino@gmail.com. There will be a person at the casino who will provide assistance, show you what to do and supervise your work. All volunteers will be provided with free parking and a meal.
Please consider volunteering for this event! It is crucial that we can supply the number of required volunteers, otherwise our casino license will be cancelled and our school will lose its status to apply again in the future.
If you have any further questions or concerns at this time, please contact me directly at sunaltacasino@gmail.com.
Sincerely,
Maggie Enns
