Thank you Ted Harrison Community!

Dear Ted Harrison School Community,

After many months of thoughtful consideration, I have decided to retire from the Calgary Board of Education at the end of June.  Though I look forward to the new opportunities ahead of me, I will really miss the school community -- I feel much honored to have spent the last few years at Ted Harrison School.  I hope you know I never took your trust and support for granted, and have always tried my best to earn it, framing all decisions around what is best for students.

The process of finding a new principal for Ted Harrison School has begun and the Calgary Board of Education welcomes input from parents, students and staff regarding the programming and leadership attributes you value. Your input is considered as part of the hiring process and will support the selection of a new principal for Ted Harrison School.  It is also shared with the successful candidate to inform their entry plan into the school. An online survey will be available on the Ted Harrison School website from today, Tuesday, June 14 to Monday, June 20, 2022 at 12:00 pm.

Welcome

Ted Harrison Families,

It has been a very calm start to the school year, as I walk through the hallways I am so impressed with all we have accomplished so far.  We have welcomed many new students to Ted Harrison this year whether in grade 5, returning from Hub online or new to the area.   Students and teachers spent much of the first week building community within the classroom, which is so important in creating a safe and welcoming school for all.  And in all classes students are engaged in their learning and settled in.  Team tryouts for cross country running and soccer have begun and volleyball plans are underway.   Already it is a busy place!

As we have not been able to return to operating as we did prior to Covid, our Meet the Teacher evening will be virtual this year.  Teachers will be sending a link to a video which will provide much of the information you would have learned at Meet the Teacher, including expectations and contact for the teacher.  You can expect to receive an email this afternoon and the links will also be posted on the website.  As always, if you have questions or concerns, please email your child's teacher.

We hope all parents have created an account through my cbe/powerschool.  This will allow parents to access regularly updated academic information, book conference and pay fees.

One change we have made to our timetable this year at the 7, 8, and 9 level has been to integrate CTF/options within our core classes.  Teachers are working closely with CBE Career Technology Foundations specialists to design learning experiences for students which provide the opportunity to design and create while learning new skills.

If you have any questions or concerns, please never hesitate to contact me.

Kelly

End of Year Reflection

June 25, 2021

Reflecting as we come to the end of a very unpredictable school year, we are so impressed with our students:  through the year, students demonstrated the strength to adapt, learned the power of flexibility, accepted the challenges of navigating the unknown, and continued to learn and grow.    During the school year, they developed connections with their learning and with others, turned challenges into opportunities, and left us with great memories of their successes and achievements over the year!  We are so proud of our students!

We also recognize and appreciate the great support, patience, compassion and understanding of our parents and guardians.  We know the year also presented families with the challenge of accommodating and adapting to changes. We are so thankful for your support this year—and are so happy to have you as partners in your child's learning.

As we prepare and plan for next year, we look forward to the start of next year and welcoming all students back to school on August 17.  On behalf of staff at Ted Harrison, we wish you and your family a wonderful summer break.

Again thank you,

Kelly

Message From New Principal

Dear Community of Ted Harrison School!

Last week I happily accepted the Principal position at Ted Harrison School. I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to become a part of your wonderful school community and am excited to begin our journey together.

In my career with the CBE I have worked in schools of all levels, from elementary to high school and while I have learned from, and enjoyed all settings, my heart does belong in the middle school years. I love the vibrancy, energy and community of middle school!

I have been a Teacher, a Resource Teacher, a system Learning Specialist, Assistant Principal at Mountain Park School and most recently, Principal at Roland Michener School. Each experience has strengthened my belief that building relationships with students and those who support their learning—both teachers and parents, is an essential key to student success.

I believe my work as a leader is to be a support to my students, teachers and parents. It is important you know that I have always been a strong advocate for all students and believe all students deserve a safe, caring and welcoming learning environment. My decisions as a leader of learning always centre on what is in the best interest of the students.

I will work closely with our Area Education Director over the next while to review the results of the Incoming Principal Survey to understand what is important to you and the exceptional learning community of Ted Harrison. I look forward to meeting you and encourage you to contact me if you have any questions, concerns or ideas to share.

I am very pleased to become a Timberwolf and I already feel I am a proud member of the Ted Harrison School community.

Yours sincerely,

Kelly Arndt

It's Been a Wonderful Year!

Thank you students, parents and community of Ted Harrison School! It has been a wonderful year, loaded with myriad opportunities for learning within classrooms and in the community, in addition to building connections among students and staff.  Our guest speakers, drummers and singers – the Sorel Riders - on June 27 highlighted the importance of the history of the land on which the Ted Harrison School sits and of the surrounding community.  What a wonderful opportunity to connect with the past!

Many of you are already aware that staffing has been quite late this year and so I must inform you of departing staff members quite late as well.

Mr. McPhail, who has been at Ted Harrison School for 3 years is moving on to a Principalship. We thank him and wish him much success in his new role as Principal.  Ms. Sandra Martin will step into the role of Assistant Principal at Ted Harrison for next year.

Ms. Ellis, who has been at Ted Harrison School for 3 years, is moving into a system role of Literacy Strategist working with many schools in the CBE and sharing her love of literacy.  Ms. Ellis leaves Ted Harrison School with a significant support in place, having won a large grant from Indigo in May.  Ms. Kostiuk will be joining us at Ted Harrison School next year to pick up the literacy work and supports for students.

Ms. Isabel Lau, who has been at Ted Harrison School for 2 years, is shifting to a system role of Math Strategist working with many schools in the CBE and sharing her love of Mathematics.

Ms. Martin, AP, comes to the school with deep knowledge and understanding of Mathematics instruction.

Lastly, Ms. Christine Creamer, who has been at Ted Harrison School since the school opened, has been successful in winning a system role of English Language Learning Strategist working with many schools who support English Language learners and sharing her knowledge of language learning. Ms. Kostiuk will be taking over the support of English Language learning in the school.

The staff at Ted Harrison School wish you an enjoyable and restful summer break making family memories.  We look forward to seeing you and your families on August. 15th.   We will have our Grade 5 students join us for the entire day beginning at 8:10 am, while all other students should arrive before the afternoon start time of 1:01 pm.

See you soon!

Winter Break

The staff at Ted Harrison wish all of our families the Happiest of Holidays! Whatever you do, take the opportunity to reflect upon how fortunate we are to live in this beautiful city, province and country as well as taking advantage of all that is offered here.

During your time together, ask your child what they are curious about, what they hope to achieve, what their dreams are. Read together, do math together, share some stories of your history.  Enjoy a walk together - maybe to the Calgary Zoo and enjoy the Zoolights.   The new downtown library is open - take a train trip downtown to see it!

We look forward to seeing your children's smiling faces back at school on January 10th at 8:25 am.

I personally want to thank you for entrusting us with your children's formal education and ensure you that you have every reason to have faith.  Teachers at Ted Harrison are amazing!!

Fall Break

Today is World Teacher's Day - we celebrate  and thank our teachers for their focused efforts in providing superior instruction to all of your children.  We have many things to be thankful for this weekend including the community with which we work.

I hope families are able to enjoy time together this weekend and next week, celebrating the opportunities we are provided in Calgary.  Perhaps, students could spend a little bit of time is reading, alone or with family as well as being curious about the world, wondering where they might discover the math.

Dr. Dianne Yee, Area 4 Director, sent Principals several quotes from Nelson Mandela today.  This is one that most resonated with me:  “Young people must take it upon themselves to ensure that they receive the highest education possible so that they can represent us well in future as future leaders.”

We have many leaders at Ted Harrison School - I encourage families and students to look forward to a future when Ted Harrison students shape our world.

As staff look forward to spending quality time with our families , we wish our entire community a restful, wonderful Thanksgiving weekend and Fall Break. We look forward to seeing students on Monday October 15th.
