Building Positive Relationships: Rude, Mean, or Bullying Behaviour?

Dear Terrace Road Families,

As part of our Wellness Goal for our School Development Plan this year, our school focus has been to help students to develop positive relationship skills with their peers and other adults within our school.

As part of this commitment, we have been working through the URStrong Program, a locally developed collective of lessons on making and maintaining healthy friendships, conflict resolution, and self-advocacy skills.

In addition, we have been learning the difference between Bullying and Mean-on-Purpose Behaviour. This aligns with the CBE Bullying and Awareness framework pictured below.

Bullying Framework.png

It is important all parents know that we are first and foremost committed to ensuring a welcoming, caring, safe, and respectful environment for all students at Terrace Road School. If your child is experiencing rude, mean/aggressive behaviour, or bullying at school it is important to bring this to the immediate attention of your child's teacher and/or school administration. We will work with you and your child toward a solution. Once we have a better understanding of which part of the continuum of behaviours your child is experiencing, we will be best equipped to support them in reaching a positive outcome.

As always, thank you for your ongoing support of this work at the school level. When parents and educators work together we can ensure that all students feel welcomed, safe, and supported at school.

Sincerely,

Tiffany Austin

Dear Terrace Road Families,

At Terrace Road we believe that student voice is an integral part of building a strong school community where everyone belongs. As a result, we have implemented a student advisory council to give voice and choice to celebrations of learning and emerging student issues that we can support and address within the school. The council was chosen through a democratic process in each classroom, and these students will aim to represent the voice of their classmates for the remainder of this school year.

This council will meet with me once per month following weekly circle talks in their classroom, and bring forward relevant items to discuss with the council. The intent is to continue to make our school a great place to come every day, and for students to feel ownership regarding school decisions.

URStrong

Our School council has generously agreed to fund a new program to our school this year that will support friendship skill-building in four main areas: 1) How to make a friend 2) How to be a great friend 3) How to put out friendship fires 4) How to remember that UR Strong.

This program was suggested in response to our school learning data results from the OurSchool Survey where it is evident that our students would benefit from targeted support in building and maintaining positive relationships.

If you would like to learn more about this program please visit the URStrong parent page at:

https://urstrong.com/parents/

No School Friday

There is no school on Friday January 29, 2021 as teachers are engaging in a professional development day.

Pick up and Drop Off Reminder

Before school teacher supervision begins at 8:20am. If students are arriving at school prior to this time they must be accompanied by an adult outside to ensure the safety and security of all of our students.

After school is it important to please be prompt in picking up your child at the designated time as we have limited staff and space to accommodate late pick-ups. If on the odd occasion you are running late we do appreciate a call to the office to let us know.

Finally as the weather gets colder and the snow piles up please slow down and watch for our young students in our school playground zone. It can be difficult to see students behind snow drifts and other blind spots. We appreciate your diligence and attention to this.

Valentine's Day Cards

We will be welcoming families to bring in Valentine's cards this year as an optional activity. If you would like to send Valentine's with your child, they must be at school no later than Friday February 5, 2021 in order to adhere to CBE paper protocols and paper quarantine guidelines.

All students will have a bag with their name marked. Monday January 4, 2021

Dear Terrace Road Families,

Welcome back! We hope you had a wonderful and relaxing break with those you love. January is here and we are excited to welcome back all students to online learning this week. Your child's teacher will be sending you an email by 8am this morning. If you have not yet received communication please let the office know and contact your child's teacher directly.

Online Learning Expectations

This week's online learning experience differs from the “emergency teaching" model in the Fall in that students will be following the same general schedule they would if they were in person this week. Each student is required to attend school online for the full day during regular bell times. There is a mandatory morning and afternoon Google Meet with each teacher. Attendance will be recorded. As well all assigned coursework must also be completed each day. If you require paper materials to complete please contact your child's teacher directly.

Music Class

All students are invited to take part in drop in music lessons during this week with Mr. Avery. There are repeats of sessions to accommodate lessons outside of your mandatory learning times. Please see link for schedule: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1B5Mw-7PCeOafdn_NEpIRh4gvAPxxwLPsE-m9CuI0e2g/edit?usp=sharing

Front Doors of School

The front doors of the school are not operational this week as they are being replaced and reinstalled. If you need to pick up materials from the school please come to the teacher parking lot doors and either ring the bell or call the school.

Kindergarten Registration

Online registration for the 2021 - 22 school year will begin on Monday, January 11, 2021. The registration process during a health emergency is found here.

  • Registration begins January 11, 2020.  No in person registrations are being accepted.
  • Children born in 2016 and who turn 5 years of age on or before December 21, 2021 are eligible for kindergarten programming.
  • At times, parents have requested their child be able to take 2 years of kindergarten. This is not an option as once they enter the system, they continue through the grades.
  • Children who are not resident to CBE may be enrolled in a Kindergarten program in CBE. However, enrolment in an early childhood services program does not guarantee enrolment for grade one in the school. Priority will be given to CBE resident students living in the designated attendance area for the school.
  • Parents / Legal Guardians / Independent Students who do not wish to provide the proof of age, legal name and citizenship document via email must contact the school and arrange a time to provide this in person before the registration form can be processed. Given that access to school buildings is limited at this time, it may take some time to get an appointment and we ask for your patience as we work to protect everyone's safety.

Hope to see your kiddos next week back for in person learning!

Sincerely,

Tiffany Austin

Dec 16
Monday Message - December 14

Dear Terrace Road Families,

We hope you are all reading to settle in for the upcoming Winter Break. As a reminder, our last day of school is this Friday December 18, 2020. We will return to school via online learning for the week of January 4-8, 2021, with the exception of our Paced Learning Program (PLP) class which will be returning in person for the week.

Online Learning January 4 – 8, 2021

If you do not have access to technology for the week of online learning and would like to request paper copies of assignments please contact your child's teacher via email this week to make arrangements to pick up at the school on January 4, 2021.

Staff have been busy making arrangements to meet your children online for this first week back in January. Please check your email at 8am on January 4. There will be important information from your child's teacher with a weekly schedule for your child to follow, along with instructions for where and how to access a daily schedule and activities.

As a school, we have made a schedule to ensure that none of our online live classes interfere with sibling's classes at our school. Please note that your child will be required to log in to the live session at least twice daily for whole school meetings using Google Classroom. Attendance is mandatory and will be recorded both in the morning and afternoon.

It is also important to distinguish this online learning from the Spring's “Emergency Teaching." Online learning in January will follow a typical daily schedule similar to if your child was attending in person. All students can expect a combination of live whole group meetings, small group meetings, and independent time away from the computer to complete daily work. You will find specific information in the email you will receive on the first day back.

Schools will remain open and operational with administrators, front office, and custodial staff working from school sites. Teachers and Educational Assistants will work from home.

Holiday Festivities This Week

All students are invited to wear their pajamas to school on Friday December 18 for a school-wide Pajama Day. Festive sweaters are also encouraged! We ask that all stuffed animals stay at home this day to adhere to Covid-19 protocols.

We will also be holding a school-wide musical assembly Friday morning for all students. We hope to have a link to share with you by the end of the day Friday so our families can also experience this special sharing time. A reminder that all HUB students are invited to submit winter artwork to piau@cbe.ab.ca by Tuesday morning at the latest to be included in our video.

Additionally, we will have a special surprise courtesy of our very generous School Council at the end of the day Friday. All HUB families can pick up their child's surprise at the school before noon on Friday at the front doors of the school.

We wish all of you a safe and happy holiday and new year! Here is to an amazing 2021!

Sincerely,

Tiffany Austin

Dear Terrace Road Families,

We hope you were able to get outside this weekend and enjoy the beautiful Calgary weather this weekend!

Circle of Courage

At Terrace Road, we are focusing on the virtue of Gratitude as part of our introduction to the Circle of Courage as a school community. The Circle of Courage is a way of being within our school which reflects four universal needs: Belonging, Generosity, Mastery, and Independence. As we work towards our School Development Plan goal of building positive relationships, we are using this model to teach students about how to advocate effectively for their needs and problem-solve through challenging situations that may arise. If you would like to learn more about the Circle of Courage you can view this video here

Gift Card Drive

As the holiday season approaches, we have been reflecting as a staff on the spirit of generosity and a variety of ways we can support each other during this time. In previously years, Terrace Road has been able to collect items for Holiday Hampers, however because of Covid restrictions, we have decided to hold a gift card drive instead. These gift cards will be provided directly to families in need in our school community to support food security and to purchase gifts for their family members for the holiday. This is why we are primarily asking for gift cards to: Superstore, Wal-mart, and Safeway.

If you are able to contribute to this drive please either send the gift cards in a marked envelope for the office in your child's agenda or drop off directly to the school office. We will pick up from you at the front door.

Additionally, if you are a family that would benefit from some additional support please fill out this form and we will do our best to try to support as a school or to find community supports to help as well.

As always thank you to all families of Terrace Road School for your generous support of our school and school community as a whole.

Sincerely,

Tiffany Austin

Principal, Terrace Road School

Professional Learning Day – No School Friday

A reminder that there will be no school for students on Friday as it is a PD Day for teachers. Teachers will be working on building knowledge around Indigenous Ways of Knowing and meeting in their professional learning community to enhance understanding around updated guidelines around assessment and reading instruction.

Gift Card Donations

We know this time of year can provide some additional financial pressures on families. We would like to extend the offer to directly support families @TRS through a Gift Card Donation Drive. If you would like to send gift cards with your children in a marked envelope for the main office we would greatly appreciate your support. Wal-mart, Superstore, and Safeway would be ideal. Thank you so much for your consideration and generosity.

Winter Assembly and Celebrations

Terrace Road will be holding a winter celebration of learning to showcase the musical talents and accomplishments of our students in K-6. This will likely be an in-school event, however we are working on ways to share some of the learning with our school community as well. Stay tuned for more details to come!

Update:  January 4-8, 2021

On November 24, 2020 Premier Jason Kenney announced important new health measures for all K-12 students in the province, including students in the Calgary Board of Education.

· From January 4 to Jan 8, 2021, students will work from home and will meet with their classes at least once a day through Google Meet. Students will work on assignments posted in their Google Classroom, and upload assignments (depending on the grades and as required by individual teachers).

· Attendance will be taken, students will be expected to engage in learning tasks and teachers will continue with programming and assessment as if students were here in person.

· If a parent does not have access to technology, we ask they contact the teacher by December 12, 2020 so that arrangements can be made for paper copies of work to go home. Staff will not be available during the break and we want to be prepared for all learners.

· Teachers have all been working with students to help them navigate the Google Classroom environments. Google Meet schedules will be sent home in the last week before the winter break.

· Teachers have discussed these changes with students, using a discussion guide provided by the CBE.

If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher for more information.

Sincerely,

Tiffany Austin,

Principal, Terrace Road School
