Health & Wellness at the CBE

At the CBE, we believe in a whole school approach to health and wellness. We call this our Comprehensive School Health (CSH) approach. CSH is about healthy eating, active living, supportive social environments and positive mental health. As a system, we focus on the following four areas: healthy eating; healthy relationships; physical activity; and positive mental health. Each school creates its own approach and goals for health and wellness.

Teaming Up for Healthy Learners

Hats On For Mental Health Day

On Wednesday May 2, Tuscany School will be participating in Hats On For Mental Health Day to show support for mental health awareness. Students are encouraged to wear a hat at school on this day to show support for this important cause. Please remember that this is not a silly hat day but rather a chance to wear a hat for this important wellness building day. The Hats On For Mental Health Day initiative is proudly promoted by the Alberta Teachers Association to help ensure that all Alberta students have healthy minds and bright futures. For more information or resources about this topic please visit www.canwetalk.ca.

In conjunction with Hats On For Mental Health Day, Tuscany School students will also be participating in the last ‘Mindful Moment’ for this school year on May 2. The mindful moment on this day will be led by a group of Grade 1 students. Below is a mindfulness exercise that you may want to try at home with your children.

The Five Senses Exercise

Take your children outside and have them lie silently in the grass. Begin to call out each of the five senses in turn (sight, smell, sound, taste, touch), and ask the children to notice everything they can with that particular sense, until you call out the next one. This exercise also works well on walks and in a variety of different environments.

Bike To School Initiative

TU4HL will once again be participating in Bike to School Day on June 5. Stay tuned shortly for an announcement about an exciting initiative around Bike To School Day brought to students by TU4HL and Tuscany School Council.

Nutrition

It is well researched that healthy eating enables learning. Tuscany is part of Teaming Up 4 Healthy Learners Projects sponsored by Alberta Health and Wellness. Good nutrition and healthy eating habits are essential and all students need to bring healthy snacks to school. We ask that parents send fruit for snacks. We ask that parents consider the adverse effects of sugary snacks such as candy and pop on children‟s learning and do not send these to school. Should a snack be required for a particular event, parents will be contacted by their homeroom parent coordinator and asked to bring a fresh fruit tray. Tuscany School is very proud of the awards won by the Teaming Up for Healthy Learners committee in 2008-2009 and 2010-2011.

Birthdays

Birthday celebrations are welcome at Tuscany School. You are welcome to celebrate your child‟s birthday by having your child select a book from a specially chosen collection. We will place the birthday child‟s name on a bookplate inside the front cover of the book. The cost is $20.00 for each hardcover donated and $10.00 for each paperback. If you would like to participate, please send a note along with cash or cheque (payable to Tuscany School). Your child‟s generosity will be recognized within his or her classroom.

Health Services

Calgary Health Region supports our school community by providing nursing services on a limited basis. If, for any reason, you wish to refer your child to the nurse, please send a note to your child‟s teacher and we will arrange a meeting. The nurse is responsible for organizing the immunization program required for our students. You will be contacted if your child is due to have immunization.
