Varsity Acres School – Acceptable Use Policy

The use of technology is an integral part of learning at all CBE schools, as required by the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Program of Studies.  Students are encouraged to use our network and digital learning tools to collaborate with others to change the world in meaningful, positive ways.  By utilizing the school’s computers and/or the network, students agree to the guidelines for digital technology use outlined in this document.

Students are encouraged to use digital technology (school owned and personal owned devices) in the following ways:

  • Access, critically assess, and communicate information and understanding
  • Seek alternative viewpoints
  • Collaborate during inquiry
  • Construct personal knowledge and meaning; demonstrate understandings
  • Organize and manipulate data
  • Interact with others 
  • allowed to bring a cell phone or smart phone for communication purposes. Messages much be checked at the beginning of lunch time (11:35 am) and right after school (2:35 pm)
  • camera use (phones, iPads, iPod) is only permitted in class under the teacher’s supervision
  • connecting to the internet with their POD students are expected to access only the CBE network

Prohibited acts include:

  • Use of someone else’s CBE account or access to network, trespassing in others peoples folders, work or files, sharing of usernames and passwords for other people to use
  • Assuming the identity of another person to gain information
  • Any attempt and/or threats to harm a person: sending or displaying offensive messages or pictures, harassing, insulting or attacking another person or their reputation
  • Posting, publishing, circulating or distributing personal information about oneself or others without the supervision and consent of a staff member
  • Using obscene language
  • Accessing, posting, sending or downloading of inappropriate and copyright material
  • Running an application/program from a memory stick/jump drive
  • In any way moving, opening hardware or computer accessories
  • Plagiarism of online content
  • Use of technology or the network to access sites / software not approved by staff
  • Participating in non-teacher-directed “chat”
  • Excessive or inappropriate printing

Prohibited materials include:

  • Vulgar or lewd depiction of the human body
  • Any content publicly labelled for adults
  • Images or text that glorify the use of weapons or promote violent acts
  • Online gambling
  • Sites that encourage the use of illicit or illegal drugs, tobacco, or alcohol
  • Sites that advocating violence or hatred against an identifiable group, ie. race, religion, gender, disabilities, age, colour, sexual orientation, etc.
  • Sites promoting criminal activity

Violation of policy may result in:

  • Restriction or loss of computer privileges;
  • School-based disciplinary consequences; and / or
  • Police intervention and/or legal action

Digital Citizenship Expectations

I will be responsible!

  • When I am at school and at home, I will use all electronic devices for educational or intended purposes only.
  • I will follow the expectations of my teachers and parents.

I will listen to my conscience (the feeling that helps me tell right from wrong)! 

  • I will make sure that I am safe, kind and appropriate when I am online.
  • I will only visit appropriate websites that promote learning and that are for educational purposes; or when at home, that my parents have give me permission to use.

I will listen to my head!

  • I will protect my private information and the information of others. 
  • I will not share my login information or passwords with others.
  • I will log off when I am done with a device.
  • I will not use other people’s accounts if they forget to log off.

I will respect others and myself when I am online!

  • I will use kind words. I will remember that my ‘digital footprint’ should not harm others.
  • I will stand up and say ‘NO’ to cyber bullying.
  • I will tell an adult if someone is being unkind or harmful.

I agree to follow these expectations so I can keep my technology privileges.

​Digital Citizenship at the CBE

Digital citizenship is about using technology and participating in digital environments. It is key to helping our students learn to use available technology responsibly in the classroom and beyond. Our school has a Digital Citizenship Plan that is updated annually, addressing how we work to build a community where we live and work together as digital citizens.
