Festival Chorus

Prerequisite: None

The Festival Chorus provides a safe and supportive environment for treble singers to gain vocal techniques appropriate to their level of development and experience, while learning and performing music from different cultures, languages, and time periods in order to expand the world views of each individual’s place in society. Throughout the year students will have workshop and performance opportunities to further expand their artistic voices.

The Festival Chorus meets Mondays and Thursdays in the AM block and runs for the Full Year for 5 credits.

 

Concert Choir

Prerequisite (Baritone singers): None

Prerequisite (Treble singers): One year of experience in the Festival Chorus and teacher recommendation

The Concert Choir is Western’s mixed voice choir, providing all an opportunity to develop their vocal skills in a demanding and rewarding environment that promotes risk-taking in a safe and supportive space. Through the performance of music from different cultures, languages, and time periods, students will explore different ways of thinking as they expand their understanding of choral music and its place in the world around them. Students will have workshop and performance opportunities where they will further develop their artistic voices.

The Concert Choir meets Tuesdays and Fridays in the AM block and runs for the Full Year for 5 credits.

 

Jazz Singers

PowerSchool Reference: [Vocal Jazz 15/25/35]

Co-requisite: Must be enrolled in Concert Choir

Vocal Jazz is open to grade 11 and 12 students enrolled in the Concert Choir. The Jazz Singers is an auditioned vocal ensemble. Students will focus on the development of vocal techniques suitable for jazz and pop styles, vocal improvisation, microphone techniques, and will have increased opportunities for solos, all within a tight-knit community of passionate, dedicated singers. 

The Jazz Singers meet on Mondays and Wednesdays in the PM block and runs for the Full Year for 5 credits.

 

Choral Class

PowerSchool Reference: [Choral Music 10/20/30_5cr]

Prerequisite: None

Offered at the 10, 20, and 30 levels, this course is open to all students with no previous experience required. Students will be provided with an opportunity to learn and develop their vocal technique in a safe and supportive environment, with a focus on small ensemble and solo literature, musical theatre, music history, theory, and choral composition. Students enrolled in Choral 10, 20 or 30 are strongly encouraged to also enroll in one of our larger ensembles for an additional 5 credits.
