Health & Wellness at the CBE

At the CBE, we believe in a whole school approach to health and wellness. We call this our Comprehensive School Health (CSH) approach. CSH is about healthy eating, active living, supportive social environments and positive mental health. As a system, we focus on the following four areas: healthy eating; healthy relationships; physical activity; and positive mental health. Each school creates its own approach and goals for health and wellness.

Health & Wellness

Nutrition and Body Breaks

Nutrition and Body Breaks will be provided each day as determined by teachers and based on students’ needs. We ask parents to send a healthy snack that will be can be eaten conveniently in the classroom. Physical activity and exercise will occur through lunch recess, physical education classes and daily body breaks outside and in the classroom.

Friendship Bench

We have a friendship bench. Each and every day there are heartwarming stories that come from children using the friendship bench at lunchtime recess. Here are two of many stories:

  • A younger girl sat on the bench alone one recess. When Mrs. Morrison sat down and asked what she was doing, the girl replied that she was waiting to find a friend. Within a few minutes another girl came by and asked if she would like to play tag. Off they ran together with giant smiles on their faces.
  • A Grade 1 boy new to the school sat alone on the bench in tears. When the teacher asked what was wrong, he looked at the children playing on the playground and said he wanted to go back to his old school. The teacher called some boys over to the bench and they asked him to chase them. The boy turned them down. The next day, the new boy sat on the bench with the teacher and the boys asked him to play again. This time he jumped up and joined the game. He has been playing joyfully on the playground every day since then.
