Traffic Safety

Ensuring our students get to school safely is everyone’s responsibility. Please be mindful of crosswalks, parking rules and speed limits when you are near our schools, especially during the morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal times.

Traffic Safety Reminders from The City of Calgary

The City wants to remind and encourage anyone who is driving children to school to operate their vehicles safely and responsibly. Parents and guardians are reminded not park where it’s prohibited during drop off and pick up times, such as blocking crosswalks, laneways and private driveways.

Pick up and drop off times can get quite busy. Give yourself extra time to navigate safely around schools, whether you are walking, wheeling, or driving. For those who drive, help alleviate congestion by parking a block or two away and walking in, wherever possible.

Talk to your kids about safe travel practices like using crosswalks with patrols, looking all ways before crossing the street and not jaywalking across the roadways as a shortcut.

Parking & Drop-Off

Please choose safety over convenience when dropping off and picking up your child at school. Set a good example by using crosswalks and obeying traffic laws.  We also ask students and parents to walk bicycles and scooters on school property. Please help us by reminding your children and reinforcing their positive choices.

We encourage parents and guardians to choose safety over convenience when dropping off and picking up students from school. Set a good example for your children by crossing at the crosswalk and obeying all traffic laws.

Please do not park in the Bus Zone on Wentworth Avenue as we require this space for loading and unloading during the day.

Parents are also reminded that there is no parking available in the Staff Parking Lot. Please do not use it to pick up, drop off or turn around. Students can be dropped off on Wentworth Avenue east of the bus zone or on the other streets that surround our playing field.

Hug and Go Zones

West Springs and West Ridge Schools are very fortunate to have two “Hug and Go” zones for drop off points for parents. Hug and Go Zones provide a space for parents who are driving to pull in and safely drop their children off close to the school. They have the added advantage of keeping traffic flowing to avoid congestion.

The Hug and Go Zones will be clearly marked with signs. The first location will be on Wentworth Avenue along the sidewalk between West Springs and West Ridge Schools. The second location is Wentworth Rise. Members of both communities are welcome to drop their children off at either location.

Please remember—School Bus Zones are not drop off zones. These are designated no stopping zones to accommodate loading and unloading of four buses each day and buses for field trips.
