Principal's Message

January 25, 2021

Looking forward to some joyful learning in 2021!  We are so happy to have students back in the building and appreciate their diligence to mask wearing and using hand sanitizer. It looks like our balmy January weather is changing this week. Students, please make sure you are wearing appropriate clothing for going outside for Lunch Break.
Grade 7 vaccinations will take place in school on January 27.  This is to complete the series of vaccinations that would have normally been completed in Grade 6.  These were missed due to school closures in the spring last school year.
January 27 is Family Literacy Day.  For this reason, we would like to remind our families about access to Calgary's Public library and their support of CBE schools.  Despite Branch closures, the Calgary Public Library continues to partner and support CBE schools and students through innovative, creative programming and offerings. Some highlights include:
Librarian-on-Call Service - connects educators with knowledgeable Library staff to identify areas of support for classroom or online teachers. Visit the website for more information.
Brainfuse - connects students Grades 2 -12 to free online tutoring via chat and is available from 2  - 11 p.m.
Solaro - offers students Grades 3 – 12 connections to AB Curriculum lessons, reviews, practice tests and study guides     Link: Calgary Public Library
Another resource is TeenBookCloud. All CBE students and staff have access to a paid subscription for TeenBookCloud (6-12) resources through the Calgary Public Library (CPL). Users can access the resources from school, library, home, and on mobile devices. TeenBookCloud is a curated database of e-books and other digital content for Middle/Junior/High Schools. The collection features over 1,000 titles, including Graphic Novels, enhanced e-books with full audio narration and highlighted text, classic literature, national geographic videos and more. Link: Access CBE Log-in information
On Jan. 28, Bell Let's Talk takes place.  This year, we have an increased focus on Mental Health and this is needed more this year than ever. Teachers may choose to talk about this day throughout the week and not just on Thursday.  Please stay in touch with your child about what they are learning and how it is affecting them.  This year join in the conversation with them at home as well!    https://letstalk.bell.ca/en/
Please remember that Jan. 29 is a Non Instruction Day, which means no school for students.
Looking ahead, please make note of several important events on February 1.  Report cards are available online through MYCBE PowerSchool portal.  Please reach out to your child's teachers if you have any questions or concerns about the marks.
We look forward to and will be welcoming 18 Hub students returning to in school learning on Feb.1.  System wide adjustments may shift Hub staffing as well as in school staffing for the second semester so will update families as we have updated information.   Additionally on Feb 1, Lifetouch will be in the school to complete the traditional Grade 9 Photos- Hub students will be contacted shortly for a plan to include them.
If you are interested in purchasing a yearbook for your child, you have until February 1 to place an order for this year. Yearbooks will be delivered to students by the end of June 2021. Pre-ordering is essential to ensure your child receives a book, as we only books that have been pre-ordered.
Feb. 11/12: Teacher's Convention – no school for students;   Feb. 15:  Family Day – no school for students.
March 10-12: Parent –Teacher conferences ONLINE – more information will be announced.
March 29 – April 5: Spring Break; April 6: classes resume
REMINDERS: School doors opens at 7:45 am to all students. Students must enter through their assigned entrance and follow health protocols, including wearing a mask and sanitizing their hands upon entry.  Anyone entering the school must review the self-screening tool prior to entering the school and cannot be admitted if they are feeling unwell.
- Lunchtime:  Students are inside to eat for 20 minutes and then outside for 20 minutes – please have students dressed appropriately for weather.
- PE periods: All Students should be dressed for current outdoor weather.
- Parents picking up students early or for appointments are asked to notify the Attendance Line in the morning to sign out the student rather than coming inside the school or sending notes and the student will meet you outside.  The Office will input the departure time so teachers are aware and able to send the students out without disrupting the class.  Early notification will also allow PE teachers outside with students to be aware of the dismissal.
- For parents who need to drop off items for their students throughout the day, there is a table just outside the front door.  After you buzz, you can say you are dropping off an item, and you may place your item on the table.  Please make sure the student name is clear on the item and we will call the student to pick up their items.
Absents-Lates-Early Dismissals: Please call the main school number 403-817-3520 and press 1 for the Attendance line to report a student absence, late arrival or early dismissal. Parents will receive notification if their student is late or absent without cause.
- We ask that parents communicate with staff through e-mail and phone.
-Please make note that our office staff is reduced to 1 on Fridays which makes it very challenging if students are arriving late and being picked up early.  Please have patience with phone calls as it may not be answered immediately as we support students and staff in the building.  Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

Stay healthy and well,
Janice
