On behalf of the wonderful staff of William Roper Hull School, I want to take this opportunity to thank all of our students, families, and caregivers for your endurance, resilience, and support during what has been a truly challenging year. As 2020 draws to a close, I wish you all every comfort that the holiday season brings. We are about to embark on a new year. It will be a year of rebirth, and of healing. It will be a year when the strength and courage that our students have forged through trying times will begin to yield results, as our society reopens and our learning continues. Mike McMahon will be the Principal of William Roper Hull when 2021 begins. He will do great work for our kids and their families, as his heart is and always has been with our most complex children. I am excited to see what our students and staff will accomplish with the support of Mike and the tremendous leadership team that is in place here. Take good care everyone, and Happy Holidays. Yours Sincerely, “Principal Joe" Joe Sturgeon Principal William Roper Hull School

03 September 2020
Dear William Roper Hull School Families and Caregivers, Welcome back! On behalf of the entire staff team at William Roper Hull, I want to express how thrilled we are to be able to once again work and learn with our students face to face. Our school is once again bustling with energy.
We are well into our first week back now, and the incredible maturity, flexibility, and understanding being exhibited by all of our students is truly inspirational. Our students are adhering to our re-entry protocols cooperatively. Masks are worn by all when entering and exiting our school, and while in hallways or at times when physical distancing is not possible. Students are respecting distancing and enhanced cleaning/sanitizing measures, and are showing genuine care and concern for the wellbeing of all those around them. Once again, the students of William Roper Hull School are rising to the occasion. We are immensely proud of them.
Still, with change and uncertainty will always come a degree of anxiety. Returning to school during a pandemic, in a time none of us could ever have predicted only a few short months ago, is a complex and challenging undertaking. I want to assure you that we are doing everything we can to keep our school and those in it safe, while also developing healthy relationships and fostering a therapeutic learning environment.
Please reach out if you have any questions, concerns, or feedback. We are happy to chat with parents, guardians, and caregivers at any time.
Take care, and be safe. Yours Sincerely,
Joe Sturgeon

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Caregivers
Well, that was strangest school year that I can recall. Today would have marked the final day of in-school
classes, as we all prepared for Summer Break and said our farewells. Things unfolded differently this year, but
our students made it through. We are so
very proud of them all.
Congratulations
to our Class of 2020
It is a tremendous achievement for anybody to successfully
complete Grade 12. Years of growth,
determination, effort and sacrifice go into high school completion. This year we have several students to
celebrate – both at our satellite program at Central Memorial High School and
at our main campus school. These young people
have faced challenges and hurdles in their lives, but they stayed the course. They refused to quit on themselves or their
education. They persevered. We want to wish each and every member of our
Class of 2020 every success in the future.
You did it! Please continue to
look after yourselves and strive for a life of happiness. You have all earned it.
New School
Calendar
Please remember that for the 2020/21 school year, William Roper
Hull School (like all schools in the Calgary Board of Education) will follow
the Traditional School Calendar. As
such, students are scheduled to return to school on Tuesday, September 1. Please note that our Calendar is available on
our school website.
August 1
Updates
As you are likely aware, on August 1 the government of Alberta is
planning to update all of us regarding the plan of action for a return to
school in the Fall. The Calgary Board of
Education will follow up any announcements by putting into action their plans
for a return to school, and will communicate these plans to students and their
families once they are confirmed.
Thank You
The staff of William Roper Hull School has worked tirelessly to
assure the continuation of educational, social and emotional support for our
students and their families during these unprecedented times. We want to thank these incredible people for
their dedication and heart, and for continuing to put our students first. We also want to thank the families,
caregivers, and programs that support the wonderful young people that we serve
together. Without this support it is
unlikely that we would have had the remarkable levels of student engagement and
success that we have achieved over the past few months. And last but most certainly not least, we
want to extend our most sincere thanks to the students of William Roper
Hull. We are immensely proud of all of
you. We can’t wait to see you again.
Enjoy your summer everyone.
Yours sincerely,
Joe Sturgeon

Dear Parents,
Guardians, and Caregivers
We hope this
finds you safe and well. We are thinking
of all of our students, and their families and caregivers, as all of us
continue to go through this unprecedented time.
Please remember that we are here for you. Do not hesitate to contact the school if you
need anything at all.
As a school
staff, we continue to be exceptionally proud of our students and how well so
many of them have adjusted to this time of remote learning. The learning opportunities provided by staff
teams are constantly evolving, and students and staff alike have created many
imaginative and exciting ways to embrace this new form of teaching and
learning. Having said that, we sure look
forward to seeing our students back at school, in person, when we are able to
re-open. There is no substitute for the
joy and energy that our students bring to our wonderful school. We miss it.
Please note
that this Friday, May 15 is a non-instructional day. Staff will be unavailable as a result. Next week (May 18-22) is our May
Break. There will be no new remote
learning offered or staff availability next week. However, starting May 25,
we will have staff in the school able to respond to parents or caregivers who
have questions or need support. Again,
please do not hesitate to reach out.
Wishing you a
safe and sunny May Break.
Yours
sincerely,
Joe Sturgeon

Dear William Roper Hull School
Families and Caregivers,
As we all
know by now, the past few weeks have seen unprecedented events effect our daily
lives to an extent never before seen in our lifetimes. The closure of classes
to students was a major decision made by the provincial government to help
flatten the curve of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we know that this has and will
continue to have a major impact for all of the students and families we serve.
We want you to
know that the teaching and counselling staff at William Roper Hull School miss the kids dearly. We want
you as caregivers to know that as a school we will do everything we are able to
do to support your children going forward.
When staff
returns from Spring Break, we will hit the ground running and be in touch as
soon as possible with plans, strategies and next steps.
You are sure to
have many questions, as do we all. The situation worldwide, and certainly in
our city, is changing rapidly. Please have a look at the resources attached to
this message, which will hopefully provide some ideas for speaking with your
children and managing anxiety during these uncertain times.
Our thoughts are
with all of you. Please take good care, stay safe, and continue to support one
another.
Sincerely,
Joe Sturgeon, Principal

We are now well into the school year and already have many things to celebrate. To that end,
please join us at William Roper Hull School on Thursday, November 21 from 4:30 – 7:30pm for our Annual Celebration of Learning. All students, families, and caregivers are encouraged to attend. Dinner for guests will be available at 5:00pm. Please come by and see what your children have been up to thus far this school year. The learning and growth has been rich, and our students are eager to share.
The Celebration of Learning will also mark the culmination of our Annual Book Fair, which runs
Monday, November 18 through to the end of the event on Thursday, November 21. Proceeds from all purchases benefit our school.
October was a busy month at our school, with the tremendous gifts of our students from Grades 1 through 12 on full display at our first Talent Show of the year. We also continued our commitment to Indigenous learning and reconciliation. In addition to thoughtful teaching and learning in this regard, students and staff engaged in our first Walk for Wenjack event on the Hull Campus. Academically, our school has dedicated extensive focus on the development of Literacy amongst students in all of our classrooms. And, as always, social-emotional learning and development remains at the core of all we do at William Roper Hull.
Our Twitter account is up and gaining followers regularly. Please follow us on Twitter to see some of the great things happening at this wonderful place of learning. You can follow us at
https://twitter.com/HullSchool or through the link on our school website.
We look forward to seeing you on November 21, and in the meantime (and always), please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or feedback that you may for us.
Sincerely,
Joe Sturgeon

October 2019
It
is amazing how quickly time can pass.
Students began at William Roper Hull School on August 15 this year, and
we have now been in session for over six weeks.
In this time students and staff have become acquainted and re-acquainted
with one another, and our school continues to bustle with learning, energy, and
growth.
Our
students have enjoyed cultivating (quite literally) the fruits of their
springtime labour, as our one-of-a-kind school greenhouse and garden are yielding
incredible amounts of kale, broccoli, and a multitude of other vegetables of
every shape and size. Included in the
bounty are pumpkins – many, many pumpkins – that we are sure will come in handy
as the Halloween season approaches. The
greenhouse, horticulture, and Outdoor Education programs, alongside our
terrific automotive and wood shops, exemplify the exceptional applied,
practical learning opportunities that our students enjoy each and every
day.
Another
highlight early in our school year is our groundbreaking skateboarding
program. We are grateful at WRHS to have
access to (and permission to use) Hull Services very own Matt Banister Memorial
Skatepark, and all the therapeutic and learning opportunities that come with
it. The park is seeing significant
student use, through an options program that is highly popular amongst
students. There is significant evidence
that identifies skateboarding as an activity that promotes healing and
self-regulation in people of all ages, in addition to being an excellent source
of exercise.
All
of our outdoor pursuits are equalled by the vitality, energy, and passion for
learning that is taking place under the roof of WRHS, as well as in our
satellite classrooms at Acadia Elementary, Sherwood Middle, and Central
Memorial High Schools. We are engaging
in new Literacy initiatives in the classroom, continuing to focus on functional
Mathematics, and enjoying rich debate and discussion with our students about
any number of current events. Our Fine
and Performing Arts programs continue to provide a creative outlet and
inspiration for our students, and our Learning Commons remains the hub of the
school and a venue for literary exploration, chess contests, or just a break
from the typical busy-ness of the school.
The
Annual Terry Fox Run fundraiser at WRHS was a terrific success. We are all very thankful that we enjoyed
gorgeous Fall weather for the event.
Students and staff of all ages jogged, walked and interacted, carrying
on the vitally important and inspirational legacy of one of Canada’s iconic
heroes. And, though recent weather turned snowy, our students are excited as they realize that with snow comes the
imminent return of our hockey program, where students hit the ice each Friday
to enjoy Canada’s game.
As
we head further into Fall, I would like to pass on a few updates and reminders
for parents, guardians, and caregivers:
- We
have joined the “Twitterverse” and now have a Twitter account. Please follow us at https://twitter.com/HullSchool or keep up to date with the Twitter feed that will be up on our
school website soon.
- Our
first Talent Show of the school year will take place in the school gymnasium on
Thursday, October 10 at 10:30am. As always, we encourage loved ones to join us
to enjoy the always high-energy performances that our students will share with
us all.
-
We
do not have school at WRHS on Friday, October 11 (Non-Instructional Day), nor during
the week of October 14 – 18 (October Break).
This is due to our school being on the Modified School Calendar. Classes resume Monday, October 21. This does not apply to our satellite
classrooms, as the host schools follow the Traditional School Calendar.
- Our
annual Celebration of Learning is upcoming.
Please set aside the evening of Thursday, November 21 to visit our
school and see what your child has been up to during the early parts of this
school year. The evening events will run
from 4:30 – 7:30pm, with dinner provided for students and their guests
beginning around 5:00pm. We hope to see
you there!
It
is an honour and a privilege to work alongside the resilient, passionate,
dedicated young people who make up the William Roper Hull School student population. It is an equal honour to serve as a member of
the tremendous staff team that supports, teaches, counsels and guides our
students through this phase of their journeys.
William Roper Hull School is an environment that brims with kindness,
goodness, respect, and care. Thank you
for entrusting your child to us. Please
call or email me directly with any feedback, questions or concerns that you may
have. We welcome parent and guardian
engagement always.
Sincerely,
Joe Sturgeon
