The Calgary Board of Education is committed to helping its students thrive in the 21st century. Appropriate use of all digital technologies and devices is underscored by emphasis of digital safety and ethical behaviour. Computer and internet access means that students are able to bring in their own personal devices to connect to the Internet for their school work.
The privilege to use devices and networks is at the teacher’s discretion and dependent on the level of responsibility shown by individual students. Wilma Hansen School is not responsible for the safety and security of these devices. There is no expectation that students bring in or have their own device. Students have equal access to school technologies including laptops and computers to support their learning programs.
Personal Electronic Devices
Students may use their personal electronic devices outside of the school building and outside of school hours. If students need to bring their personal devices to school, they should lock them up in their hall locker.
Responsible use of any personal electronic device will be at the teacher’s discretion during classes, that is, teachers may specifically request students to bring personal electronic devices for use within the classroom context for specific class work. Students will be requested to put away their personal electronic devices before going to their next class.
Students who are not respectful of this policy will be referred to the office.
Computer Access
Computers are available throughout the school for student learning, research and assignments. Computer use requires teacher permission and supervision. Students can save work in their personal storage folder on the school server. Work can be shared via Google docs or emailed between home and school. All computers (and personal electronic devices) at our school are subject to the rules, regulations and policies as set out by the CBE. Please note that whether access is through the cabled network or CBE Wi-Fi, data is monitored by CBE internet security and thus nothing is truly ‘private’. Responsible digital citizenship is the key and will be reinforced in the school setting.
Printing
Each student’s resource fee includes a quota for printing. The quota is monitored by software. Students exceeding their print quota or requesting special print jobs may be required to pay for extra copies. Payment must be arranged before the print job is sent.
Cyber Safety
Using the Wilma Hansen, CBE, or any other network accessible through our school computers to denigrate, harass, threaten or in any way demean any student or person is prohibited and will be dealt with severely. This may include suspension and/or legal recourse.
