Traffic Safety

Ensuring our students get to school safely is everyone’s responsibility. Please be mindful of crosswalks, parking rules and speed limits when you are near our schools, especially during the morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal times.

Parking & Drop-Off

With an increase of students, we have an increase in traffic. This includes pedestrian, vehicle, and school bus traffic. So far, we have managed this very well! Thank you for following traffic safety rules.

Going forward, for the continued safety of everyone, we ask that you:

  • Leave yourself plenty of time to park near the school but not in front of the school. Please be courteous and safe when dropping off or picking up children from school.
  • Watch for signs indicating ‘No Stopping’, ‘No Parking’ and ‘Disabled Parking’ zones. School bus loading zones must be kept clear so children can safely step off our Yellow Busses bus.
  • Leave 5 meters between your car and any stop sign, yield sign or crosswalk markings. This is the law and it ensures children are visible when they enter the crosswalk.
  • Blocking entrances to garages or driveways inconveniences and is disrespectful to our school neighbours. It is also against the law! Thanks for not doing that!!!!!!!!!

School Parking Lot is Off Limits

Please be advised that all parking stalls have been designated as staff parking. Please do not enter, stop, or park in the parking lot during the school day. An empty spot at any time during the day does not mean a stall is available for non-staff parking. If you choose to “just be a minute” in our lot, you may be preventing someone who works in the school with your children from getting to their job on time.

Given that there are no parking stalls available for public use, and given that dropping off students in the parking lot is prohibited (and extremely unsafe), there is no reason for any parent/guests to be driving in the school parking lot, before, during and after school.

In order to keep all of our community safe we are requesting that drivers only park in the designated “P” (parking) areas. These areas should also be used for dropping off or picking up students. Bus zones, Handicap Parking zones and the school parking lot should not be used at anytime for dropping off or picking up students. This is in accordance with CBE policy to ensure the safety of all students. This policy also applies to Summit Kids program participants.

Please also note that there is no reason for any person, other than staff members, to access the staff parking lot. All spots are assigned to staff members, and the parking lot doors are always locked. Summit Kids access is through the main doors. Thank you in advance for choosing safety over convenience, and for obeying the law. Please be familiar with the area map below.

It is preferable, if you are dropping off your children at school, that you park so that they exit vehicles on the school side of the street. If you are parking on the other side of the street, please insist that your children use the crosswalks, and not jay walk. Parents jaywalking between buses is problematic, and we ask that parents obey the law and not jaywalk. Pedestrians should cross the street at corners and crosswalks only. Our school safety patrollers patrol the crosswalk closest to the school site.

School Bus Zone

We would like to remind all parents that the bus loading/unloading zone in front of our school is designated only for our school buses. The bus drivers must be able to bring their bus close to the curb in order to safely drop-off and pick-up our students. This becomes very difficult and unsafe when there are parent vehicles parked in this area. We ask that if you must leave your vehicle parked for a short time, to use the designated parking areas only. We have 6 busses this year, and they require all the space in the bus zone…right up to the crosswalk! Thank you for your help in keeping our bus zone a safe area.

Playground Supervision

Student supervision begins at 8:55 AM. Students should not arrive prior to that time. At the end of the day, students are expected to go home directly when they are dismissed in the afternoon. There is no formal supervision after school.

School Patrols

In order to ensure our Grade 5 and 6 students are adequately trained in the job of School Patrols we will be working with Calgary City Police and the Alberta Motor Association during the month of September. Please remind your child that if they need to cross Silvergrove Drive when they come to school, to always cross at the south crosswalk (by our parking lot.) Patrols will start the first day of school. Thank you to all our students for their leadership!
