Important Dates

We follow the CBE Traditional Calendar. The calendar sets common start and end days, non-instructional days and holidays. For our school’s additional non-instructional days, late entries, early dismissal days and events, see our school calendar page.

Planning is underway for what the 2020-21 school year will look like for our students, staff and families. The CBE has created an internal task force with representatives from every service unit to lead the planning for different scenarios. All of our decisions will be guided by the advice of the province’s chief medical officer of health and Alberta Education guidelines. The safety and well being of our students and staff will come first in any decisions we make. More information will be provided to families before the first day of classes on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2020.

First Day of Classes

Our first day of classes is Sep. 1, 2020  for Grades 1 - 5 and the school office is open to parents on Aug 28, 2020.

On the first two days of school we have a staggered entry for kindergarten. This allows for a greater opportunity for children to get to know their teacher, their classmates and adjust to their new classroom routines.

Classes begin on Sep. 1 or 2, 2020 with a staggered entry schedule.  Tue., Sep. 1, 2020 for children with last names starting with A-L, and Wed., Sep. 2 for children with last names M-Z. The first day for all children is Thu., Sep. 3.

Teachers will meet children on the west wall compound (near the creative playground). They will be wearing name tags and orange vests, and once they have collected their children, they will bring them into their class. Before bringing your child to his/her teacher, please check-in to the Kindergarten Welcome table, located in the middle of the compound. If possible, please know the letter(s) of your child’s bus(es) when you come to school.

Parents are invited to a “boo-hoo” tea in the gym. This is hosted by our School Council and School Administration and will give parents an opportunity to visit with other parents, and ask questions. If your child is having a rough start, someone will come get you.

In preparation for September classes:

  • Bus maps and schedules will be available at the school on Aug 28 & 31 between the hours of 9:00am – 3:30pm. They will also be available on the Calgary Board of Education Website.
  • Once you know your child’s bus letter – record this, along with their address and emergency contact information somewhere safe on your child’s backpack (ex a nametag).

If your plans have changed and your child will no longer attend W.O. Mitchell, please notify the office as soon as possible, 403-777-6100 ext. 0 or email us at

Assigned Teachers

To view our complete staff list, please visit the Our Staff page. Teacher and classroom blogs may be found on our Classes & Departments page.

If you provided your email address on your child's registration form, your child’s teacher will send you an email the day before school starts, introducing himself/herself to your family. Teachers will meet children on the west wall compound (near the creative playground). They will be wearing name tags and orange vests, and once they have collected their children, they will bring them into their class.

If your child is taking the bus on the first day, staff will meet children at the bus and direct them to their teacher. Please make sure that your child knows what their bus letter is. If you are dropping your child off on the first day, but plan on taking the bus later, please let your child’s teacher know the bus letter.

If you are dropping your child off, please say good-bye outside.

Class Lists & Placement Requests

Please know that your child’s current classroom teacher will spend much thoughtful time strategically placing students into each years’ classes to best support their learning and social needs. This work usually begins the end of May.

We do not accept parent requests for teacher-specific student placements in any grade, nor do we accept peer requests. Please do not ask your child’s teacher, or administration to do this. Going forward, if you have information about your child that you believe we may not know, or that has changed, but that may impact success in next grade, please put this in writing to the attention of Principal Susan Coveyduck. This information will be held confidentially.

Noon Supervision

Lunch Hour:  12:35 pm – 1:20 pm

For more information visit our Noon Supervision page. Learn more about Lunchtime.

School Supplies

All school supplies used in the classroom are distributed by teachers during the first days of classes. Please provide a backpack large enough to carry reading and homework books, as well as a pair of indoor non-marking shoes. Please ensure that all your child’s items, especially their shoes, are labeled properly.

Information Packet

On the first day of school, each child will come home with a information packet containing important information regarding parental contact, medical information, school fees and accompanying services. Please give the information in the packet the attention it requires. The folders are due back to school on Sep. 18.

Registration Information

Please visit our How to Register page for all registration details and registration forms.

Our school office opens on Aug. 28 for registration from 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM.

You can find more information on the CBE school fees and waivers page.

Yellow School Bus Transportation

Yellow school bus routes for the 2020-21 school year are created over the summer and based on the addresses submitted before the pre-registration deadline in May. While CBE Transportation continues to accept pre-registrations, these will not be considered until route changes are done after Thanksgiving.

Yellow school bus route maps are posted on the CBE website:

In September, a confirmation email will be sent to all parents/guardians who have submitted a pre-registration, if the parent/guardian has subscribed to receive messages. It will include transportation fee information (if applicable) and payment options (if applicable). Families can cancel their pre-registration with no financial penalty using MyCBE / PowerSchool by Sept. 30, 2020.

More information about 2020-21 transportation service levels and proposed fees are posted on the CBE website.

Conditional riders can also register using MyCBE / PowerSchool. Applications will be considered after eligible riders registrations have been processed.
