Mrs. Harper | Kindergarten

Week of September 26-30, 2022

Hello Families,

We had so much fun this week doing our Terry Fox Run and having a sharing circle on Orange Shirt Day. We will be starting to learn about the sense of taste. Over the next few weeks we will be doing taste tests of different type of tastes we have. If you would not like your child to participate in any of these tastes please let me know and we can come up with a different option. I have tried to ensure that all items are suitable for all children in our class, please let me know if I have something on my list that is not suitable so I can ensure to change it.

Here is the plan:

  • Sweet
    • Red grapes
    • honey
  • Bitter
    • Broccoli
    • arugula
  • Salty
    • Gluten free pretzels
    • Green olives
  • Sour
    • Lemon
    • vinegar
  • Umami
    • Dried seaweed
    • Tomato

On Monday we will also be starting “Star Student of the Day” please see below for when your child is the Start Student. On their day they will get to be the line leader, the teacher’s special helper and they can bring an item to share with the class during our class meeting. This can be a favourite toy, a picture, a story, whatever they would like. Please be aware that sometimes things get damaged in backpacks and such so nothing valuable or extremely sentimental would probably be best. I am happy to put a picture on the smart board for the students to look at if they would like to share something that you are not comfortable actually bringing to school.  If your child is absent on their assigned day due to illness or other reasons, don’t worry, we can just add them to the bottom of the list. I will not start a new rotation until everyone has had a chance to be a Star Student.

Here are some highlights from this week:

  • We had our Terry Fox Run and documented in our Visual Journal by colouring a running shoe and saying who we were running for (someone we love and want to help in our life).
  • We learned about how every child matters and is important and we drew 3 things that matter and are important to us on an orange shirt and put into our visual journals.
  • We had our first sharing circle and despite getting rained on in the morning a little bit, they seemed to really enjoy it.
  • We did a wonderful job of matching numerals with the pictures of the same amount.

Here are a few books we read this week:

Questions you could ask at home for reinforcement:

  • Why do we run on Terry Fox Day? (To finish the run across Canada that Terry Fox was unable to finish.)
  • What do we need to be holding in order to speak in the sharing circle? (The talking stick)
  • What word can we now read with the phonemes we have learned so far? (sat)
  • What is the action for “t” (moving your head from side to side as if you’re watching a tennis match)
  • How do we show 3 with our fingers? (thumb, index finger and middle finger, NOT the index finger, middle finger and ring finger because in sign language that means “W”)
  • Why do we wear an orange shirt? (to remind us that every child matters)

A few things we plan on doing next week:

  • Learning about our sense of taste.
  • Learning about how to answer the question “How many?”
  • Letters of the Day “I” and “P”
  • 7 Grandfather Teaching of Respect

Important Dates to remember:

  • Friday September 30, 2022 = NO SCHOOL (National Day for Truth and Reconciliation)
  • Friday October 7, 2022 = NO SCHOOL
  • Monday October 10, 2022 = NO SCHOOL (Thanksgiving)
  • Tuesday October 11, 2022 = Picture Day

·      We learned the difference between counting and just randomly saying numbers.

·      We learned the number 1 and 2 how they can be represented through numerals, objects and pictures.

·      We learned a new game in gym called “don’t throw your junk in my backyard”.

Here are a few books we read this week:

Questions you could ask at home for reinforcement:

·      What is something that starts with the /s/ sound?

·      How do you play “Don’t throw your junk in my backyard”? (You try to throw all the balls into the other team’s “backyard”)

·      Where do you hear the /a/ sound in the word “bat”? (in the middle)

A few things we plan on doing next week:

·      We will start our letters of the week

  • Letter T says /t/
  •  Letter I says /i/ (short i)

·      We will also work on identifying the number 3 in picture, object and numeral form as well as counting to 3 in order.

Important Dates to remember:

·       Wednesday September 28, 2022 = Terry Fox Run and assembly (This will be in the afternoon; however, I will be doing a mini Terry Fox Run in the morning with the AM class) If you would like to donate, you can do so here: https://schools.terryfox.ca/6347/donate

·       Wednesday September 28, 2022 = Library Day

·       Thursday September 29, 2022 = Orange Shirt Day

  • Please do not park in the bus zone, even during mid-day pick up as we have busses that come at different times of day.
  • Thank you to everyone that returned your Student Information Form, I am really enjoying reading them and getting to know your children a bit better. If you haven’t returned it yet, please do so as soon as you are able.
  • Parent Conferences will be held next week Thursday September 22nd from 9:00am- 8:00pm and Friday September 23rd from 8:00am – 12:00pm. Students will still be coming to school on Thursday. I will have a guest teacher in my classroom. Due to having two classes I require more time slots then the rest of the school to ensure I have enough time to visit all families.  You can sign up from conferences through the MyCBE portal. Here are instructions on how to book a session:
    • Log into the PowerSchool Parent Portal at MyCBE > myCBE Apps > my School Conferences
    • Click on “Book a new Conference now”
    •  Select your student
    • Select the correct conference
    • The default teacher will auto-populate – select a different one from the drop-down if needed

    •  Once the booking is successful the booking dashboard will display a summary of your conference booking
    • You can log into the system at any time to view your bookings, re-schedule or cancel appointments etc.
      • If you booked an online conference an email confirmation will be sent to the legal guardian.  Save the e-mail and read the full instructions.   Note – the link to connect to your conference is “Join Microsoft Teams Meeting”.
      • We ask that you arrive 5 minutes before your scheduled Teams Meeting and take the time to test your audio and video setting.
      • This link will take you to the Help Pages should you require more detailed information on how to book your conference and how to join online. https://www.cbe.ab.ca/support/Pages/MyCBE-PowerSchool-School-Conferences.aspx
      • If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the school at 403-777-8630.

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome back to Kindergarten!  I hope you have enjoyed your summer, and are ready for an amazing year of learning together.  As we begin Kindergarten at Woodbine School, I look forward to getting to know all new students and families.  I look forward to working with you in continuing to create a supportive, positive, high-yield learning community.

My name is Mrs. Caroline Harper and I will be your child’s teacher this year. Our classroom is located in room 1 and 2.  Our designated door for dropping off and picking up your child will be at the front doors, please refer to the map.

In order to communicate with you on a daily basis, I have a blog that can be accessed from the Woodbine School website.  Each week I will post our weeks activities as well as important reminders, such as dates to remember and pictures of all the fun we are having. Our school website is: https://school.cbe.ab.ca/school/Woodbine/Pages/default.aspx . If you wish to contact me about your child directly or if you have any questions or concerns my email is cmharper@cbe.ab.ca.

Our first day of school is Thursday, September 1st, 2022.  We will be doing a staggered entry for Kindergarten on Thursday and Friday, please refer to the chart below to see when your child has been assigned to attend.

Starting Tuesday September 6th we will begin the regular schedule of Monday - Thursday AM Class: 8:58-11:46, and the PM Class: 12:54-3:40. On Friday classes will alternate (see attached calendar) and attend 8:58 – 12:50. Please notify me as to how/who your child goes home with.  Your child will be dismissed outside the front doors once they have identified that they see their adult who is picking them up.  2022-2023-Woodbine-Traditional-Calendar.pdf

You are welcome to walk your child to class on the first day, but keep in mind we would like the students to be in their classrooms with their teacher as soon as possible to make the first day of classes smooth as possible.

When picking up students during the day, you are required to check them out through the office where they will call them from class, or have them ready if pre-arranged.  Our school calendar for the year will also be attached to this letter.

Please bring a pair of “indoor shoes” that will be left at school. Please keep an extra change of clothes in a zip-lock bag in your child’s back pack in case of accidents. We will not have a designated “snack time” during our day, however will have a snack table for children to go to when they require a snack. Please pack enough snacks for your child’s typical appetite. Learning takes a lot of energy and requires healthy fuel to make that energy. Please try to pack healthy snakes as well as a water bottle, ensuring to avoid peanuts as it is an allergy issue.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Caroline Harper
