Hello Families,
If during your Spring cleaning you come across any fake flowers or plastic vases that you no longer want, we will take them in Kindergarten! We will be starting a flower shop center in May so I am trying to collect items early for this.
I have sent home a line from our assembly script for your child to practice (and hopefully memorize) for our assembly. We will be video recording their lines the first week back from break. If you are able to practice with your child I would very much appreciate it.
Thank you to all the parents/grandparents that have signed up to help with our swimming lessons in May. There are still a large number of spots to be filled. If you have a valid police clearance and have the time, please sign up. Here is the link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B0C4DADAF23A6F58-swimming
I have also sent home the permission forms for swimming, if you could please fill them out and return them after the break that would be lovely (green forms for AM, blue forms for PM). If you have already signed up to volunteer I have sent home forms for you to fill out and return as soon as possible as well.
We will be taking a walking field trip to Fish Creek Park to participate in an Outdoor Play Residency with TimberNook of Greater Calgary. I have made a sign up for volunteers for this walking trip, if you are able to attend, that would be lovely. Just so you are aware, with it being so late in my pregnancy, our Vice Principal Mr.Webber will be the teacher for this field trip. I have also attached a letter about Nature Play from TimberNook. Here is the volunteering link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0949ADAD2BA0FEC43-fish
I hope you all have a wonderful and safe break! We will see you April 3rd back at school.

· What does the word capacity mean? (The amount something can hold.)
· What are the actions for /sh/ and /ch/? (/sh/= finger up to mouth like your shushing someone, /ch/= moving your arms in a train motion)
· What lacrosse trick did you learn this week? (pancake flip)
A few things we plan on doing this week:
· We will be learning the phonemes /th/ and /qu/

Hello Families,
We will be celebrating 100 days of school today (Monday March 6th) with rotating Fridays, our 100th day is a bit behind the rest of the school. The AM and PM classes are off by one day of their actual 100th day of school so we will be celebrating BOTH AM and PM on Monday day as our 100th day of school!
We will be starting the filming of our Kindergarten Assembly. This year because we will be doing a Spring Concert May 4th, and Kindergarten is scheduled to do their Assembly the first week of May, I felt it would be too much for them to learn/memorize 2 live events. Because of this we will be doing a video for our Kindergarten Assembly. As such, if you have not filled out the release form in the My CBE account for me to be able to film your child, can you please do that this week so that they can be included in the video. If you completed this form and did not give consent please know that although your child will not be recorded in the video they will be participating in other ways (such as art work) and can perform the songs learned and such to you at home.
I have made a sign up for volunteering in March, please use this link to sign up https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0949ADAD2BA0FEC43-march
If there is a date that is not listed that you would like to come please just email me and we will be happy to have you. I just didn’t want to overwhelm you all with dates. Also, I put the whole time your child is here but please don’t feel you need to come for the whole time. If you could please just let me know what time you do plan on coming so I can plan accordingly. I have also added some play dough making slots, as our play dough is starting to dry out, if you are able to make some that would be lovely. Thank you so much J
I have sent home March’s Scholastic flyers wit AM and will send with PM on today. If anyone would like to be part of my class order I will be placing the order on March 16, 2022. You are always welcome to order on your own online using our class code RC136497. https://classroomessentials.scholastic.ca/s/cec-ca/en/search?collid=Reading%20Club&prefv1=Reading%20Club&prefn1=supplies-cec-ca
Here are some highlights from last week:
· We focused on sounding out our words to spell them on our own.
o At this point “inventive spelling” is what we are looking for. This is when they try to sound out the word and write the letters they hear. Often it will be missing vowels or other letters but as long as they are getting some of the sounds correct, that is what we are looking to see. For example, they may spell car like “cr” or spell pencil “pnsl / pensl”. As we continue to learn the “rules” of the English language they will become better at spelling words correctly.
· We continued comparing numbers and worked on one more to get us ready for addition.
Questions you could ask at home for reinforcement:
· What is one more than (give a number between 1 and 10)?
· How do you spell ___? (try to use words that use proper phoneme sounds not exceptions for example bike uses the magic e exception so that would not be a good word, but cat uses no exceptions and follows the normal phoneme rules and can easily be sounded out.
A few things we plan on doing this week:
· We will be celebrating our 100th day of school and being 100 days smarter!
· We will be learning about the sounds /ch/ and /sh/
· We will continue to compare numbers within 10 to get us ready for addition and subtraction.
Important Dates to remember:
· Monday March 6, 2023 = 100 Day
· Thursday March 9, 2023 = Parent teacher conferences (THERE IS SCHOOL THIS DAY)
· Friday March 10, 2023 = NO SCHOOL / Parent Teacher conferences
· Thursday March 16, 2023 = AM students wear green.
· Thursday March 16, 2023 = Scholastic Class Book order due (you can still order online)
· Friday March 17, 2023 = PM students attend and wear green (St.Patricks Day)

I will include a list of each class for you. If your child has a special bag or box that they would like to bring to collect the Valentines they receive, they are welcome to bring that. If not, I will have a paper bag that they can decorate to use for their valentines as well.

Hello Families,
Thank you so much to those parents that sent back the blue form to help us plan for next year. If you haven’t yet, can you please send that this coming week. I have included a link below if you would like to come volunteer in the next couple weeks. I have made the times for the whole morning or whole afternoon, I don’t expect you to come the whole time, but I wanted you to be able to choose which is more convenient for you, if it be to stay after drop off or come early to pick up. Please just email me the time you would like to come so I can make sure I’m ready for you. Also, if you have a preference of what you would like to do, if you’d rather work with the kids or rather do more prepping items, just let me know. Thank you in advance for your help! Please Note: You need to have your police clearance with Woodbine School in order to be able to volunteer in the classroom.

Hello Families,
We are starting a new Star Student Rotation so I have included the list of who is assigned for each day at the end of this message. This will also foster as a list for Valentines if you wish to hand out Valentines cards this year (no obligation) I only ask that if you do please make sure you make enough for the whole class so no one is left out J. We will be starting our new Post Office center next week. If you have any extra envelopes around your house, you’re willing to part with, we would be happy to have them.
Here are some highlights from this week:
· We are busy with the RRST (reading readiness screening tool) I spoke with you all about this screening assessment at the last parent teacher conference. I will be doing this with your kiddos over the next few weeks and will have the results of the assessment to share with you at our next parent teacher conferences.
· We learned about the phonemes /J/ and /OA/
· We made our own patters.
Questions you could ask at home for reinforcement:
· Finish the sentence “When two vowels go walking…” (the first one does the talking and says its name. Example: phoneme /OA/ makes the long O sound)
· What is the action for /J/?
· If you have 2 objects in your core how many colours should you use to make your pattern? (2)
· If there are 3 objects in your core how many objects do you have to underline to show the repeating core of your pattern? (3)
A few things we plan on doing next week:
· We will be learning the new phonic sounds /ie/, /ee/ and /or/
· We will start working with numbers 6-10 (we had a bit of difficulty making our own patterns so we worked on it a bit longer this we so that we could master it, so we had to wait to start our work with numbers 6-10)
· We will be learning to write letters for our new Post Office center.
Important Dates to remember:
· Wednesday January 25, 2023 = Library Day
· Thursday January 26, 2023 = Scholastic Book orders due if joining the class order.
· Friday January 27, 2023 = AFTERNOON kindergarten will be coming to school

Hello Families,

Week of September 26-30, 2022
Hello Families,
We had so much fun this week doing our Terry Fox Run and having a sharing circle on Orange Shirt Day. We will be starting to learn about the sense of taste. Over the next few weeks we will be doing taste tests of different type of tastes we have. If you would not like your child to participate in any of these tastes please let me know and we can come up with a different option. I have tried to ensure that all items are suitable for all children in our class, please let me know if I have something on my list that is not suitable so I can ensure to change it.
Here is the plan:
- Sweet
- Bitter
- Salty
- Gluten free pretzels
- Green olives
- Sour
- Umami
On Monday we will also be starting “Star Student of the Day” please see below for when your child is the Start Student. On their day they will get to be the line leader, the teacher’s special helper and they can bring an item to share with the class during our class meeting. This can be a favourite toy, a picture, a story, whatever they would like. Please be aware that sometimes things get damaged in backpacks and such so nothing valuable or extremely sentimental would probably be best. I am happy to put a picture on the smart board for the students to look at if they would like to share something that you are not comfortable actually bringing to school. If your child is absent on their assigned day due to illness or other reasons, don’t worry, we can just add them to the bottom of the list. I will not start a new rotation until everyone has had a chance to be a Star Student.
Here are some highlights from this week:
- We had our Terry Fox Run and documented in our Visual Journal by colouring a running shoe and saying who we were running for (someone we love and want to help in our life).
- We learned about how every child matters and is important and we drew 3 things that matter and are important to us on an orange shirt and put into our visual journals.
- We had our first sharing circle and despite getting rained on in the morning a little bit, they seemed to really enjoy it.
- We did a wonderful job of matching numerals with the pictures of the same amount.

Hello Families,
It was so lovely meeting with you all this week. I truly enjoy teaching your children and look forward to continuing to work together throughout the year to help your children have the most successful kindergarten year.
Here are some highlights from this week:
· We started our letters of the week focusing on S and A. We learned their sound as well as how to print them.
· We learned the difference between counting and just randomly saying numbers.
· We learned the number 1 and 2 how they can be represented through numerals, objects and pictures.
· We learned a new game in gym called “don’t throw your junk in my backyard”.
Here are a few books we read this week:
Questions you could ask at home for reinforcement:
· What is something that starts with the /s/ sound?
· How do we get up to the playground? (We walk up the stairs, not the hill)
· How do you play “Don’t throw your junk in my backyard”? (You try to throw all the balls into the other team’s “backyard”)
· Where do you hear the /a/ sound in the word “bat”? (in the middle)
A few things we plan on doing next week:
· We will start our letters of the week
- Letter I says /i/ (short i)
· We will also work on identifying the number 3 in picture, object and numeral form as well as counting to 3 in order.
Important Dates to remember:
· Wednesday September 28, 2022 = Terry Fox Run and assembly (This will be in the afternoon; however, I will be doing a mini Terry Fox Run in the morning with the AM class) If you would like to donate, you can do so here: https://schools.terryfox.ca/6347/donate
· Wednesday September 28, 2022 = Library Day

You can sign up from conferences through the MyCBE portal. Here are instructions on how to book a session:
- Log into the PowerSchool Parent Portal at MyCBE > myCBE Apps > my School Conferences
- Click on “Book a new Conference now”

Dear Parents and Students, Welcome back to Kindergarten! I hope you have enjoyed your summer, and are ready for an amazing year of learning together. As we begin Kindergarten at Woodbine School, I look forward to getting to know all new students and families. I look forward to working with you in continuing to create a supportive, positive, high-yield learning community. My name is Mrs. Caroline Harper and I will be your child’s teacher this year. Our classroom is located in room 1 and 2. Our designated door for dropping off and picking up your child will be at the front doors, please refer to the map.
In order to communicate with you on a daily basis, I have a blog that can be accessed from the Woodbine School website. Each week I will post our weeks activities as well as important reminders, such as dates to remember and pictures of all the fun we are having. Our school website is: https://school.cbe.ab.ca/school/Woodbine/Pages/default.aspx . If you wish to contact me about your child directly or if you have any questions or concerns my email is cmharper@cbe.ab.ca. Our first day of school is Thursday, September 1st, 2022. We will be doing a staggered entry for Kindergarten on Thursday and Friday, please refer to the chart below to see when your child has been assigned to attend.

Starting Tuesday September 6th we will begin the regular schedule of Monday - Thursday AM Class: 8:58-11:46, and the PM Class: 12:54-3:40. On Friday classes will alternate (see attached calendar) and attend 8:58 – 12:50. Please notify me as to how/who your child goes home with. Your child will be dismissed outside the front doors once they have identified that they see their adult who is picking them up.
2022-2023-Woodbine-Traditional-Calendar.pdf You are welcome to walk your child to class on the first day, but keep in mind we would like the students to be in their classrooms with their teacher as soon as possible to make the first day of classes smooth as possible. When picking up students during the day, you are required to check them out through the office where they will call them from class, or have them ready if pre-arranged. Our school calendar for the year will also be attached to this letter. Please bring a pair of “indoor shoes” that will be left at school. Please keep an extra change of clothes in a zip-lock bag in your child’s back pack in case of accidents. We will not have a designated “snack time” during our day, however will have a snack table for children to go to when they require a snack. Please pack enough snacks for your child’s typical appetite. Learning takes a lot of energy and requires healthy fuel to make that energy. Please try to pack healthy snakes as well as a water bottle, ensuring to avoid peanuts as it is an allergy issue. Sincerely, Mrs. Caroline Harper
