🚲 Bike Survey:

To encourage Active School Travel, Woodbine has partnered with EverActive Schools to run a “Bike to School Day” on June 7th (weather dependent). This initiative will focus on increasing cycling knowledge and safety awareness. In preparation for this event we are looking to find out what students have bikes and helmets at home and other logistical items.

We ask that you please complete the following quick survey (please follow this link or copy it into your search engine) https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2JCPWNK

If you have multiple children at the school, we kindly ask that you fill the survey out separately for each child. In addition, if there are any individuals who have cycling knowledge or knows how to tune up bikes and would like to contribute their knowledge to this event, please reach out to Ms. Bignell at clbignell@cbe.ab.ca

At a later date we will be sending out some details to ask for volunteers for this event! Stay tuned!

🏊🏼‍♀️ Swimming Volunteers:

Thank you to all the parents/grandparents that have signed up to help with our swimming lessons in May.  There are still a large number of spots to be filled.  If you have a valid police clearance and have the time, please sign up!

🌲 Timbernook Residency: In April, Woodbine school will be participating in an outdoor play residency.  Please see the information below.  More detailed information will be posted on the teacher blogs closer to the date.

“The POLAR VORTEX is coming so be prepared for SOME REALLY COLD weather again! This will probably mean that we will be having BLUE DOT (indoor recess and lunch recess) days for most of the week as well. However, please be dressed properly and try to arrive closer to the bell!”

So remember this… I guess this is why I became a teacher and not a meteorologist.😬 Since the Polar Vortex did not come last week or should I ask…is it really coming? Sorry about that but still dress properly for school as the wind is chilly these days!

🧲 Science Projects

I have started a conversation with the class about creating a Magnet Maze. Other classrooms did this prior to the winter break however, I did not give enough notice for supplies. If you have any extra recycling material then you may send that to school with your child. This is a group project where they must move a magnet from one place to another area using a magnet in a creative way. We are using mazes as our inspiration! I will be bringing in some materials as well but throughout the week, we will benefit from whatever you can provide.

Thank you for your support!

January 15th ~ Welcome Back Again in 2023!

This holiday was very busy and I apologize for not posting anything recently.

I had a BIG family dinner on the 22nd at my house on the last day of school 😰

🎈 First, I want to acknowledge our 3 friends whom had a BIRTHDAY in December! 🧁

Happy Birthday Friends 🥳

Lynn ~ December 17th

Mason ~ December 23rd

Rayyan ~ December 25th

I am so happy to see everyone back happy and healthy! There was a lot of sickness going around in December and hopefully we ALL got the rest needed to recover. It was great to finally have a full class back! 😉

Thank you to everyone who sent in a gift for me before the break!  It is SUPER appreciated and certainly not expected. I am sincerely sorry for not thanking you earlier or wishing you all a Happy New Year! 💝

All of you are such lovely people and I am very honoured to have your child in my classroom. 🥰

👩🏼‍💻 Teachers are currently finishing up our Report Cards which will be available to you online (MyCBEaccount) on Monday, January 30th. We are continuing to have lovely weather though still important to dress for the cold.

❄️ 🥾🧣🧤

We are from Calgary and the weather could change at any minute...we should know this 🤭

December 18th

This is our last week of school before our well-deserved Winter Break. It will also be a VERY COLD WEEK with temperatures consisting of above -20 every day! Please dress appropriately for the weather each day. We will most likely be having a BLUE DOT week due to these temperatures but students should still be bringing in appropriate clothing for entrances and exits. (Blue Dot days are when the temperature is above or feels like -20 and up so students will be indoors for recess and lunch breaks)

🌨 The Weather Network ~ Calgary

https://www.theweathernetwork.com/ca/weather/alberta/calgary

🎶 Carolling will be happening in the gym on Tuesday, December 20th at 3:00pm.

It will be fun and a festive time for the whole school! 🎤

🧸 Thursday, December 22nd will be our last day of school before our Winter Break. Kindergarten to Grade 5 students are welcome to wear their pajamas to school for the day! This is just an optional activity before we head off to celebrate the winter break with our families.🥱

🎬We will also be allowing the students to watch a movie on Thursday afternoon in any one of the Grade 2/3 classrooms. Our room (Room 11) will play the movie, Toy Story 4, since we have been watching collection during our snack time starting in December. Your child is welcome to bring in a treat for the afternoon to watch the movie. Remember that they are allowed to go to any Grade 2/3 room that they wish to watch the movie that is playing there. They will be around different students whom could or might have a peanut allergy. 🍿

*Please provide a snack for that afternoon that is NUT FREE! * 🚫 🥜

If you want to offer a snack or special treat for classmates, please supply one for everybody. We will have 23 students for the last week of school!

😢 Our friend Francis has moved away and we are all very sad to see him go! He is moving onto huge adventures and we all really appreciated the slide show that he shared with us on Friday about his new endeavor across the country! 🗺

All the best to Francis and his family✌🏻

🎃 Halloween Day

On Monday October 31, 2022 students are welcome to wear costumes if you and your child wish to do so. Like last year, students will be allowed to come already dressed so that no time and efforts are taken away from teaching and learning. Please be mindful that teachers will continue to deliver the Alberta Program of Studies, and infuse the season into their lessons. As a result, no costume should interfere with regular teaching and learning, including Physical Education. We do ask that students keep all weapons, masks or large accessories at home and that costumes are school appropriate.

Parent Council Notes:

🎃 Halloween Dance: The Halloween Dance is returning Thursday Oct. 27th from 6 to 8pm.  Buy tickets online for $4 each until Tuesday Oct. 25th.  Remaining tickets will be sold at the door for $5 (cash only)

Buy tickets here:  https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/woodbine-elementary-halloween-dance-tickets-443851691357

We also still need a number of volunteers to help make this fun event run smoothly.  Please consider signing up for a half hour volunteer role if you are attending.  We could not have these amazing events without help from parents!

Sign up to volunteer here:  https://www.signupgenius.com/go/409054EABA82DA0FF2-woodbine1

💳 Gift Card Donations: The Woodbine School Council is asking for donations of grocery gift cards to help support families in our school community.  Any denomination is appreciated and can make a big difference.

It is requested that, if possible, the gift cards be purchased for Superstore or Loblaws as these stores have other items such as clothing and can be used to meet more basic needs than simply food.

There will be a drop off box for these gift cards at the Halloween dance, or they can be dropped off at the school office at any point.  Please indicate the value on the gift card.

October 23rd

We are heading into our last week of October which is a bit shocking to me! We do not always complete things in the week and will be continuing them this week.

📌 Do not forget that there is NO SCHOOL this Friday due to a PD day. Also, I will be celebrating our October birthdays on Thursday, October 27th since Monday is Halloween and I think it will be a bit busy! 😉

🎃 You are allowed to wear your Halloween costume on Monday, October 31st as long as it does not show blood or scary features. Please remember that if your child wants to wear accessories with a costume. They MUST BRING all items home that day! Unfortunately, no one will be at the school in the evening to retrieve a wand, sword or hat that was left behind!

🥜 You are welcome to bring a treat or special surprise for students as long as you can provide something for everyone. (26 students) We actually DO NOT have a peanut allergy in our classroom but there are other 2/3 classrooms that do. Our school prefers that you are NUT AWARE when providing these!

📚 Read to Self ~ Increased to 3 minutes because they ARE SO EAGER to read

However, we are still practicing how to maintain and build stamina by following certain rules:

1.     Stay at your desk in an appropriate position (no laying down or tapping noises)

2.     Not looking at another person’s book

3.     Reading the whole time and re-reading your books

4.     No bathroom breaks (unless it’s an emergency)

5.     Refrain from drinking water at this time

They are doing a great job so far only a few times I have needed to remind students

📖 Chapter Book

Finished Freckle Juice by Judy Bloom and will be working on some writing activities next week.

📘Library

Students were able to visit and check out books from the Library on Thursday with Mrs. D. They were all very excited! Library is not a set time or day for our Grade 2/3s and they may return their book on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday and check out a new book when they can during the day.

👍🏻 Fun OR Finish Friday

I forgot to mention last week that I do make a list of work that needs to be completed. If they complete all their work in the time provided then on Fridays they will be allowed a 30-minute free choice time. We have Lego, reading, games or at times the computers or ipads to use. I do provide plenty of time in the week for students to catch up on work and this is usually a great motivator for them

September 11th ~ A little bit about Room 11

 Hello Families,

We have been in school for 6 days now! Our class is establishing some routines and ways to show respect during the day. Everyone is being kind and working super hard on tasks. I am very proud of them all! 👍🏻

Here are a few things that have happened in our classroom last week:

📚 Read to Self ~ Building Stamina by reading for 2 minutes

Ask your child what are the rules during Read to Self that they need to follow to ensure success! I do like to build this up by adding 2 minutes to each month and aim for 20 minutes of reading time in June 2023. However, every classroom is different just like it might be for your child’s need too! 🤓

📖 Chapter Book ~ Freckle Juice by Judy Bloom

Everyone has been great at giving suggestions about the characters or predicting what will happen next. It is a very short chapter book so we might be able to finish it this week!

📝 Back to School Interview & All about Me!

We have done some writing about ourselves in both Math and Language Arts.

They answered questions about what goals they want to achieve in Grade 2 or 3 or what is different this year than last. Students also were asked specific questions about themselves like “how many letters are in your name?”. Then asked to show these numbers in different ways, for example, using ten frames, pictures, words or tally marks.

🔢 Numeracy

Students have started working on a few math sheets that will be discussed at your “Meet the Teacher” time on September 22nd or September 23rd. More details will come regarding these times in the following week.

For Future Reference:

🙅🏼‍♀️ 🥜Allergies

We do have a peanut allergy in the classroom. Please ONLY provide Peanut/Nut Free snacks and lunch items with your child each day!

 🥳 Birthdays

In my classroom, I prefer to celebrate a student birthday at the end of the month. I typically leave a time on the last school day of the month to sing “Happy Birthday” and offer a small gift to your child! If you would like to provide something for your child’s birthday then I encourage you to bring in something for EVERYONE (25) and your child must hand it out themselves. I prefer them to not be food but items like stickers, pencils or erasers. This is NOT an expectation but only a suggestion if you wish to!

🖐🏼 Fidgets

I do allow students to bring in a "pop it" or small fidget toy if they feel that they need it. However, I am not stating you must bring one or buy something for your child. It is ONLY a personal choice! Our class has talked about how some students benefit from a fidget to help them focus and not everyone needs these things. We continue to talk about how to use them properly and when are the appropriate times to utilize them. Students are responsible for their own fidget toy if they choose to bring it in and are not allowed to exchange it or play with others.

🎧 Technology

We will be working on setting up student in our Google Classroom, Raz Kids and a Math Prodigy account soon. You will be given all the computer codes during our Meet the Teacher time. If you are able to provide a pair of headphones for your child to use in order to reduce noise in the classroom, it would be appreciated😉  They do not have to be expensive and even Dollar Store ones work very well!

Thanks Everyone!

See you all tomorrow on Monday, September 12th 😃
