Mr. Pedersen | Grade 5/6

November 24th

What’s happening in our classroom:

We are going on our first field trip of the school year next Wednesday! Just a reminder that signed field trip forms were sent out last week and need to be returned by Tuesday for our trip on Wednesday. We are also still looking for parent volunteers, so if you want to come spend an exciting day with some awesome kids at the Police Interpretive Center please let the school or Mr. Pedersen know!

Math

Grade 5’s and Grade 6’s are both working through their multiplication skills. Grade 6’s are also beginning to explore some long division. I encourage students to bring their JumpMath books home for some extra practice.

Science

Grade 5’s are a couple of weeks into their Electricity & Magnetism module. They have been focusing on electrical safety and have just started exploring basic circuits.

Grade 6’s are in the early stages of their Evidence & Investigation module. You will have to ask them about what is happening in Science as they are with Ms. K for it!

ELA

The entire class has been working on their narrative story writing skills the past few weeks. They began working on a Haunted House narrative before Halloween, and have been super engaged in the process. We have also been reading the book Holes as a class. The class has done a great job reading and reflecting on the story so far!

Social

Ask your student about what is going on in Social as all grades migrate to another classroom for Social. I am pretty sure the grade 5’s have been exploring the regions of Canada, and the grade 6’s are exploring democracy.

French

We have adjusted the schedule a little bit to incorporate a more structured and consistent French component. Students now have French every Thursday instead of Social Studies. They have been reviewing letters, numbers, and colors.

Gym

The students have been working on throwing for a few weeks and began their first sport-based module (volleyball) last week.

Upcoming Dates:

November 28th – Volleyball Club

November 29th – Police Interpretive Center Field Trip

December 8th – Non-Instructional Day (No school for students).

December 21st – Winter Solstice Evening 6:00 – 8:00

December 23rd to January 7th – Winter Break

Reminder

With the weather getting colder and sloppier please make sure your student has indoor shoes that remain at the school. We have been noticing an increase in students who have only one pair of shoes and are bringing in a lot of dirt and debris after lunch and/or recess.
