Physical Education

Go Wolves

Physical Education (PE) class is a requirement in Alberta, and students will have PE every day of the week.

Appropriate PE Attire

Changing for Physical Education helps students to fully participate in all athletic activities in the class. The Woodman colors are red, black and white. Our Woodman Gym Strip is available for purchase from the online gear school. More information will be provided directly to families. Students may also choose to buy their own gym attire from an alternate source. It is imperative that students wear proper gym attire in order to participate in physical education. Proper gym attire consists of a t-shirt and shorts (different from the clothing a student wears to school) as well as proper athletic shoes. In cases where  a student chooses to wear unsafe or inappropriate clothing, they will be asked to change into a loaner shirt/shorts.

Hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen are strongly encouraged for all outdoor activities.  To ensure safety and the safety of others, please remove jewelry prior to PE.  It is the student responsibility not to bring any valuables to the locker room.  This includes money, cell phones, or expensive items of clothing/accessories.

Participation in Physical Education classes is mandatory.  We ask that if a student is to be excused from participation due to a medical reason that a note from the parent with the information of the condition and anticipated date to return to activity be sent with the student to their PE class.  Students attending school not feeling well without a note will be encouraged to change and do the best they can. We request that PE teachers be informed of any pre-existing medical conditions or injuries. This enables PE teachers to be aware of anything that could impact participation in physical activity.

Due to the restricted size of student lockers and repeated use of gym wear, we require that the students take home PE wear to launder frequently so that an acceptable level of cleanliness is maintained.

Intramural and Interscholastic Sports

There is a broad selection of interscholastic sports teams for interested students in Grades 6 through 9, provided by the Calgary Middle School Athletic Association. Volleyball, cross-country running and soccer begin the year, followed by wrestling, basketball, badminton, and track and field.   We encourage all students to get involved in our physical education program, whether it is interscholastic or intramural, to enhance their physical and social development:

Intramural Sports (Lunch Hour)

Interscholastic Sports (Before and/or After School)

Everyone is welcome to participate

Try-outs determine who will be selected to teams

The emphasis is on learning the game/sport and having fun

The emphasis is on competitive play for more experienced players

Friendly, cooperative games take place, usually against teams from the same grade over the lunch hour

Players compete at various schools around Calgary

Cost is covered by the noon hour supervision and activity fee

Fee for playing is charged to parents, which covers the cost of tournaments and referees

Participation in our sports teams is a privilege for our students in good standing.  It is our expectation that students who participate are adhering to the CBE Student Code of Conduct.  Teacher-coaches are volunteers and have the right to make final decisions regarding the selection of team members as well as the interpretation of the CBE Student Code of Conduct.

Woodman Physical Education Program

Mission

Students will acquire a physically active lifestyle regardless of ability or skill level through participation in various activities within a positive and inclusive learning environment.

Evaluation

Physical Education will be assessed based on the CBE approved report card learning outcomes for Physical Education and the Alberta Learning Physical Education Program of Studies.

Performs and Refines Movement Skills

“A” Activity:  This mark will reflect how students acquire and apply a wide variety of skills across the components of the curriculum (dance, games, gymnastics, individual and team activities and alternative environment activities).

Cooperates To Demonstrate Fair Play and Teamwork

“C” Cooperation: This mark will reflect how students interact and communicate with others, their sense of fair play, their attitude and their role in leadership.

Explores and Applies Strategies For Leading A Healthy, Active Way Of Life

“B” Benefits of Health: This mark will reflect the student's acquisition of knowledge related to self-sufficient participation in physical activity and their actions demonstrating personal responsibility for their health in and outside of school.
“D” Do it Daily:  This mark will reflect how students assume the responsibility to lead an active lifestyle through their participation, effort, adherence to class expectations and routines.

Participation in Physical Education

Participation in Phys. Ed. is not optional; a major medical concern requires a note from a parent or guardian explaining the nature of the injury, and, when the student can resume participation.  When a long recovery period is required, an alternate assignment may be assigned for evaluation purposes.  Activity will be modified for minor illness or injury but participation is still expected.

For your Child's Safety

It is imperative that students with asthma, allergies, diabetes or other health concerns, make themselves known to their teacher. This helps both the student and the teacher to preserve a safe environment in the class and ensures a successful year.  Thank you for your understanding.

Clothing Requirements

Gym Strip

You may purchase school shorts and shirts from the Phys. Ed. Team; or wear your own athletic attire (ensure non-Woodman athletic attire is a red or grey shirt and black bottoms): School gym shirt is required for the Cross Country, Wrestling, Badminton and Track and Field Teams.   Please ensure gym clothing is washed at least once a week.

Outdoor Activity

Physical Education will include outdoor units year round.  Physical Activity in our Canadian climate can be very beneficial and enjoyable as long as you are prepared for the weather conditions.  Please ensure you have a change of clothes appropriate for the weather.  It is recommended to wear layers in cool and cold weather conditions.

Footwear

For both student safety and the gym flooring athletic shoes with non-marking soles and a good grip are required for PE. Shoes must be fully laced up; sandals, street shoes, boots or heels are inappropriate footwear.  Inappropriate footwear will be treated as not changed.

Forgot your Gear?

We have a few sets of clean gym kit that will be loaned out for that class period.  If a student forgets his/her kit, he/she will be asked to make a phone call home if this problem persists.

Woodman Gym Strip

T-Shirt:  $15
Shorts:  $20
Lock:      $5
Gym strip/lock may be purchased through your Phys. Ed. teacher.
